I've seen this mentioned a bunch in this thread, someone sell it to me?

Not that I should be buying anything just now but who am I kidding here.

Either this sells it or it doesn't (the bugs have been patched)... it's pretty much the only in-depth jRPG that's all out with the level of VA, graphics and whole package you can buy for the iPhone, and that's only because it's a PSP port of the same game selling for $30 on Amazon. I'm not aware of any other RPGs that offer similar features or are even close to 1GB in size, though I wouldn't mind it if I were wrong about that.

So VLC is now on iphone/ipod. Gave it a whirl and found it to be pretty useless since it can't play 720p x264s

Anybody find a use for it?

It probably can since the iPhone 4 can handle 720p video, it's most likely just a matter of making sure to use the right options when encoding (not use any overly demanding quants or tons of b-frames, etc). Unless you mean it literally can't even open them, and in that case, hopefully it's just a matter of updates til that is fixed.

Yeah, trying low-bitrate 720p video results in about a frame a minute with audio. High-bitrate 720p (2GB+ for 45 minutes) results in a frame per minute with no audio.

I don't have anything in my library that's lower than 720p, meaning I'd have to re-encode stuff to make it work on VLC, which makes it useless for me at the moment since I may as well just re-encode stuff using a iphone 4 preset in handbrake.

Are there random battles?

Got Age of Zombies this morning [pic] from Halfbrick.

Yes, it's still bloody brilliant.

Thanks man :)

Yup! Age Of Zombies will be hitting the iTunes App Store on October 28th! And to celebrate, we've released a new trailer:

Very excited to see the game I worked on finally coming to the App Store :)

You did Little Things? My kids and I love that. Only downer is the US descriptions of stuff, with US plugs etc.

Thanks!

It was actually pretty difficult to name the objects to suit US, UK, Australia objects. (I'm Australian). Like "Q-tip"... trademarked. "iPod" trademarked. Hockey Stick -> Field Hockey Stick. I did my best to keep things in the "middle" and even had to delete some objects I just couldn't refer to in a suitably generic way.

Sale is going really well BTW, currently #8 on iPad in the US and doing well elsewhere too!

Nope, enemies are visible on the overworld screen, and depending how you approach them it will effect how the battle begins (which will be turn-based), if you come from behind, you get to strike before the battle starts, otherwise you get a normal fight unless you wait long enough for them to ambush you. There's a poor quality video that shows it off fairly well here right at the start.

This has to end! Every single week there's a new iPhone game I just have to get. iOS is turning out like the 360 back in 2006. Everyone is going game to game to game.

Congrats Rlan :) Halfbrick deserves every ounce of its rapidly increasing success. Excited to try this one out!

In the trailer they announced Age of Zombies to be a universal app. Will there finally be retina support from the get go? I'm still sad about the missing high resolution graphics in Monster Dash. :(

This might not be the answer you want to hear, but I suspect that vlc uses software decoding because it can play non mp4 files, without hardware decoding, it will be years before it can play such files.

On the bright side, have you tried using the iPod app? It will separate you video collection into vlc and iPod, because iPod can only play mp4 but it is better than nothing.

(I don't know if it will work right in iPod.app for iPhone, because I use my iPad for video, but my guess is that it will, and if not will with a slight tweak and reencode)

Good luck.

It hasn't receive an official launch date yet as far as I know.

Would love to just see some footage of how it's shaping up on iOS to help me deal with the fact it was supposed to release mid-September. Really hope they get the little things right so controls aren't a pain.

How is Broken Sword: Directors Cut?
It's very good, if you have Beneath A Steel Sky iPhone you know how it controls already. It's not retina display and I don't think it ever will be, but the new animation and graphics look great either way.

yeah, hate to beat a dead horse but no retina support no buy, really no excuse at this point not to implement it in all upcoming iOS releases.

Yes, Crimson Gem Saga is a good little KRPG. Your typical 7/10 RPG.
My only complains go to flawed controls and bad music loop (you can hear a cut when the music loops :/).
I played only a few hours, but I like it. For 4 €, it was a steal !
And it runs well on 3G.

It gets better. I really enjoyed it on PSP. It's arguably the best RPG on that platform, and certainly on the iOS.

I've given several games a pass, but this is my general rule of thumb as well. I think games that have been in development for longer than a few months get a pre-update pass, but beyond that, and pretty much from today forward, games need to be released with Retina support for me to support them.

game center i'm more lenient on just because i really don't give that big of a shit about that service...it's pretty boring as it is right now

i definitely agree about retina display, though..I'm about done with giving games a free pass on that front.

Have you tried the AVIdemux trick where it passes through the video to an MP4 container while only encoding audio?

Anyone know of any good anime visual novel type games in English?

Other than Phoenix Wright?

There aren't any that I know of at the moment, but it's bound to happen eventually. There are a lot of good looking visual novels in the AppStore (although they have super high prices, often more than 10 bucks), so sooner or later, I'm sure some will be translated.

For those of you wishing that Pocket Frogs had more actual game to it, congrats! Frog racing, yo.
From reading it, it looks like you don't actually control them while racing them, it's just based on statistics, which doesn't really give it much more game to it imo.

Re. Pocket Frogs, I like the change to using as many potions as you wish, rather than the total to maturity. That's an improvement.

The first three arcs of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni are up in English. Excellent writing which shines through despite the poor translation. There's also Kira Kira, which I've heard is good but can't personally vouch for.

Retina support and Game Center will be available in Age of Zombies from Day 1!

Dammit, they add that now? I'm almost finished with it. I've got 54 of the 68 achievements unlocked.

I know. I'm almost done with the achievements too (two to go), and I could have used that many times over.

Ooh sweet thanks for those.

I've been wanting to get into visual novels more (the non eroge kind) and I was wondering if any were up...

I got the first arc of Higurashi no Kaku Koro ni for 99c. Hopefully it's good enough that it'll entice me to get the other 2.
