I'm super tight on money atm so I have only downloaded like 5 games. If anyone has some free games they'd recommend then please do share. All I play is stardunk and shibuya atm.

Subscribe to the free app RSS from App Advice, and you'll get a list of the best free titles every day!

Check out Chase the Dot, Godfinger, Extreme Hangman, Swap Box, Topple 2, The Ultimate Alphabet (only the letter A, but highly recommended), Cliffed Free, Words with Friends Free (my favourite game).

Tilt to Live is great. GC support is nice and their new modes are always good.

One thing I noticed is that on Gauntlet there seems to be one formation that's just impossible to pass without dying. Like it's dots without a hole anywhere. Anyone run into that?

There's an animation that plays if you go into the open part that lets you get through. It's basically like an elevator.

I still can't get over the fact that Madfinger managed to pull off 60 fps with visuals like this.

Damn impressive.

Wow is that retina display too? Geez...

Yeah i think that's the one. Must be looking at it wrong because I've tried to treat it as an elevator, but thanks probably just need to do it once or twice more. The new ice mode is quite fun. I love the tilt controls in this game and I usually hate tilt controls (bit trip).

Wow, Samurai Vengeance II has just taken the top spot for most impressive looking iPhone game. Amazing art design running at full retina display resolution at 60 fps? How did they pull THAT off? Definitely a step above most other games on the platform. Seems like the Unity Engine is pretty powerful.

Game is solid too. A bit simplistic, but very fun and perfect for the on the go play. Definitely worth the $3 (even just to experience such incredible visuals on a phone at 60 fps)

Was thinking about picking this up especially with the visuals. How's the controls and any other GAFers pick this up?

i got it, only played on ipad so far but it's pretty impressive. i guess the game itself is nothing incredible, but the controls work fine and it really is stunning to look at, so given the universal nature...yeah, worth it.

i thought i'd toss the guys a bone considering i picked up the first game free anyway.

What is this??

Samurai II.

I picked it up. looks gorgeous on the retina screen.

I’m less impressed with the actual hack and slash gameplay but it’s passable.

but for the graphics alone, it’s crazy impressive.

What happened to Secret of Mana for iOS? All the news is dated around E3. Has there been any information from Squaresoft since? It's supposed to come out this year and it's almost November...

Nothing so far. I think the last we've heard is a 2010 release but we'll see. Aside from Chrono Trigger this will probably be the only rpg I have an interest in playing.

Is PES2010 worth buying for 59p? I already have Real Football 10 but don't like the controls.

Edit: nvm still full price on uk store.

Keep an eye on Heroes Lore, it might play a lot like Secret of Mana. Hoping it makes it out next week, it's been released in some territories, but no where were we got impressions yet.

Game Dev Story has a 100.0% of winning the iPhone GOTY thread. The 2-10th places will be the interesting ones.

I reallllly like GDS. Played it every minute I could the day it came out. But I wouldn't put it in my Top 3 because from mid-game on there's zero challenge or tough decisions to make. And while it has a great variety of options (genres to choose from, employee types), there's not actually that much to do.

is chrono trigger really coming to iOS?

Nothing has been announced as far as I am aware. But it would be amazing if they did release it, since I can't find the DS version anywhere.

Side note: The iPhone/iPad threads in OT can't seem to give me an answer, so would it be cool with the regular posters in here/mods to ask for advice some apps that is not directly game related?

Three-player! Invalid! I blame player interference! (Without basis, necessarily.)
Haha. I'm getting beat badly in the other game, so it all evens out.

My vote would be for Carc as iPhone game of the year, incidentally. GDV is awesome, but Carcassone is ridiculous.

Aren't those mass Zynga Facebook games the same as Game Dev Story, pretty much? Not that it's a knock against it, I bought it and it's about as much fun as Hanse or Vermeer was (which is to say, a bunch). But Café World and so on are the same thing, yeah?

The game feels kinda pointless, really. And it repeats itself sooo fast! It's one huge grind-fest. I don't know if I'll ever make another company in the game after having figured out how to accumulate money. It's basically a done deal after that.

Oh, in the game, I'm primarily a PC developer, it's nice that that works out (if you do it right).

Pocket Gamer Rumour Mine has always been bullshit. Case in point: Fallout Tactics: New Vegas, which was supposed to be released along with the console game according The Rumour Miner.

they might as well release another "port" of that game for another 30 bucks or something absurd. it's clear that they can't / don't care to do anything new with the series

I can't speak to what those games are like, but it seems to be a pretty bog standard "sim" game.

I'm in the same boat - I bought it and have really enjoyed it, but I think it's overhyped, in that it seems kind of like a situation where some (most definitely not all) of the people who have been evangelizing it would otherwise mock or dismiss it, had the subject matter been different.

I think it's been well worth my $4, just been sort of interested by the reception.

Yep. If it weren't about game development, it'd be ignored. And I saw it was a pointless grind fest by like my 3rd development job. You just earn money, spend it and never go too far down, and just keep doing that until the game says it's over. It doesn't have enough variation and goals to keep your interest once you're broken from its addictive spell, similar to most MMOs and Facebook games.

I've kept my mouth shut until someone else said something though, because there isn't room to gripe when it's just $4.

You're not wrong at all. The reality is, the majority of people really like pointless grind fests.

/goes back to breeding Pocket Frogs

The grinding would be kinda okay if it was a multiplayer game. Which is totally possible! They could basically map the current gameplay 1:1 to a multiplayer version.

An MMO, even.

Or, you know, put the fucking thing on Facebook :lol :lol

Are there any more games like Game Dev Story?
Simulation type games that are good for a portable device or games that offer a good grinding experience :P

Has anyone tried Deep Deep Dungeon?

Looks like it has some potential to be an interesting little dungeon crawler. From the video I saw earlier it looks like combat is done through a timing-based golf-swingesque bar that, I assume, is dependent on your weapon of choice. I dislike the aesthetic but the game could be fun.

It's by the same people who did the sRPG War of Eustrath? Interesting, thanks for posting, I'll probably grab it and check it out.

Edit: User reviews seem to indicate it lacks the depth of WoE, very basic gameplay elements, not a plethora of tactics to contemplate. Just tapping and minimal upgrading of weapons. Oh well.

Apparently. TouchArcade folks seem to like it, as well as The War of Eustrath. I assume you played that, then? How was the translation? Even in games with negligible amounts of text a poor translation tends to turn me off of the game entirely.
