I've been messing around with iDos, and I can't believe that I can play old Sierra VGA games on this thing so smoothly. Two problems so far, the sound is choppy as he'll, and it's not letting me save. Is that a dosbox issue?

I'm having the same problem. My guess there aren't write permissions on the folder.

Galaxy on Fire was such a massive disappointment. The game basically ended with the 10-or-so mission tutorial. Beyond that brief and promising introduction, there was absolutely no story development, no hint of a dynamic universe, no economy or trading, no point to the faction levels, and no variety outside of the 5 or so stock mission types. It quite literally was nothing more than a playable tech demo.

Despite that, I did pick up the sequel today, in the hopes that it built upon the first game and provided a more robust experience. Still too soon to say if it's a real game, but so far so good! There's a suggestion of a story beyond the tutorial, and the shopping and status screens hint at more robust underlying gameplay elements.

Controls seem worse, but that's likely due to the beastly clunker you're stuck with after the opening scenes. Graphics look quite nice, and the quality slider defaults to the highest level on my iPhone 4. The free roam camera toggle while flying might serve to alleviate the tedium of waypoint and autopilot segments more bearable.

Well, we can't judge the framerate from a video, but still, it didn't appear anywhere near as smooth as it should have. I fear it will be a choppy port, which makes no sense as the iPhone could EASILY handle this at 60 fps.

No 60 fps, no buy.

You know, I too ride for 60fps, but... It's an RPG dude.

I'm getting Chu Chu just so I can leave the title music play on repeat. Fuck that was awesome. Anyone care to jump in and give impressions on the port? Sega is too unpredictable when it comes to iPhone stuff.

PS. Jumping in on Age of Zombies too. Go Halfbrick!

Yea, but it used to be 60 fps, so why change it? To screw with our nostalgia? :(

I know. Not to mention there's exponentially more horsepower on the iPhone vs. the OG hardware.

But still, it's an RPG. It's not like it'll affect gameplay.

Never thought I'd ever type those words...

Bullshit. It's an ACTION RPG. Download Zenonia or Caligo Chaser on the iPhone and tell me that a chunky framerate doesn't have a significant gameplay impact. I'd grant you traditional turn-based RPGs, but even in this case, there's no reason why a port of a 15 (or whatever) year old SNES game should perform any worse than the original. Play the PSP version of Ys VI side-by-side with the PC version, and tell me that the PSP game isn't totally fucking butchered.

Caligo Chaser actually has a really smooth framerate if you set the speed to the ultra-fast setting. Not sure how playable it is going so quick, but it looks nicer if you can get over how quick everything zips along.

I agree 60 fps makes 2D games feel so much more polished. The SNES Zelda: LttP would never feel the same to me running at 30fps, it'd be all wrong. I'm worried Secret of Mana will be the same way when I get it.

Okay, I figured out how to save in Sierra adventures, at least. You have to change directory on the save menu to just C:

So, Cave has a survey up on their iPhone site. A lot of the questions are typical survey stuff, but there are a few interesting ones, like the one that lists a whole crapload of Cave games and asks which ones you'd like to see ported to iPhone.

Even the SMT MMO is on there.

There's also a question about what other genres you would like to see Cave try on the iPhone.

I play on normal, and it's positively horrific.

how's age of zombies? a bit hesitant since it's just another dual stick shooter...but i loved monster dash after playing the crap outta canabalt..

it's either this or game dev story

Age of Zombies is very much like Minigore but the pace is a bit slower and the gun fires a bit slower, almost at a Commando pace now. Because of this it feels slightly like it has every so slightly more refined controls than Minigore does. The art and story have a great vibe too. I love Minigore, but I think Age Of Zombies brings enough new stuff to the table to warrant owning both.

The time has now come, as the fourth game from the creators of Fruit Ninja and Monster Dash is released worldwide! Barry Steakfries has launched his way to the App Store once again, this time as a time-travelling badass in Age of Zombies!

Upon arriving at the laboratory of the evil Professor Brains, Barry discovers a plot to destroy mankind by sending zombies throughout time to wreak havoc! As a pro-shooting kind of guy, Barry rises to the challenge and steps through the portal, determined to save the world and make it home in time for dinner.

Players will blast their way through five unique worlds featuring zombie cavemen, mummies, ninjas and the legendary Zombie T-Rex.

Age of Zombies includes the full story mode spanning five worlds with multiple levels, as well as Survival mode with Game Center global leaderboards for high score junkies. Everything has been optimized for App Store devices, with updated graphics, new menus and intuitive touch-specific controls and tutorials. This is the definitive Age of Zombies experience, dressed to impress as a Universal app for both iPhone and iPad.

Really hope you guys get a chance to check it out! Super excited to release another game to the App Store as always. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

This game called Super Blast is free for a limited time. It's basically a tilt-controlled schmup. Quite entertaining I must say.

I agree completely. I am not a big fan of Minigore, so I wasn't sure how much I would like Age of Zombies, but I bought it based on what I had seen of the game, and Halfbrick's track record. This is still not my preferred style of game, but I definitely prefer this to Minigore (I think partially due to the controls, art style, story, and the progress bar indicating how long until the next level).

Anyone having problems with Chu Chu Rocket? I've got a 3GS and every time I launch it, it crashes when I try to get past the title screen.

I thought this was quickly pulled? Is it back?

Any more impressions on Galaxy on Fire 2? I really love space sims (Tie Fighter etc). Will this fill the void or is it i simple arcade shooter?

Any other impressions on Chuchu Rocket? I have good memories of playing Chuchu Rocket on the Dreamcast, but Sega aren't exactly known for their good iPhone ports.

That's almost exactly what I wrote last page :lol

I'm working my way through Galaxy on Fire 2 now so cannot say anything at the moment but if you are looking for something like starfox and rogue squadron then pick up star battalion.

All the reviews have been extremely positive. I picked it up last night, and only got to play a few minutes, but it was very nice looking with it's retina support, and the reviews say there's over 10 hours of gameplay in it, so it should be quite enjoyable. Fully voiced so far, though nothing special in terms of VA as to be expected. A little slowdown when ships get real close, but tilt controls work nice, so could be promising. Pick up the first one for free if you want a small taste if you still can, but keep in mind the 2nd looks significantly better and is supposed to have a story with lots of side quests where the first is void of anything.

That said, if TIE Fighter is a 12 on a scale of 10, I'm expecting this probably isn't even a 6. I loved TIE Fighter to death, very few games deliver a complete package like that did.

They mention a universal update and a price increase (and improved textures for the universal update as well), so I just grabbed it before all that happens. I'm sure at some point it will go on sale for a few bucks, but I enjoyed what little I played of the original. Perhaps Mejilan has more impressions.

Anyone try Chu2 yet? How does it run? Did they drop the framerate into the toilet like Sonic 4? Thinking about the iPad version.

You know, I too ride for 60fps, but... It's an RPG dude.
It's a 2D scrolling action RPG. If the screen scrolling appears choppy, it would definitely ruin the experience especially when the original game was 60 fps. It's also a port of a SNES game. The iPhone should not struggle with something like that. When games like Do Don Pachi and Samurai 2 show up running at 60 fps, you know there's plenty of juice in there to handle a SNES port.

I just sleep purchased Plants vs. Zombies & Mr. Driller for $1 each. Never played either but I remember Mr. Driller from the Dreamcast.

I've played a few games and it seemed smooth on my iPhone 4. I don't remember any drops, at least.

there are separate versions? FFS
I know, this shit is getting on my nerves.

Even when integrated versions are released, a lot of developers still make mistakes. Worms 2, for instance, includes both versions, but the iPhone version lacks retina display support despite the fact that the iPad assets are already in the game. Why?! Makes no sense.

I got it through Cydia, but I have a feeling it'll be back once they take the copyrighted games out if it.

Shining Force just dropped to $0.99, and to think I just bought it like two days ago. :(
Sucks :( but shining force is worth full payment!

Ecco and SoR1 are down to cheap too, golden axe still £1.79, phantasy star 2 still £3 :(

Simogo released the first information on their game Kosmo Spin today.

I finished Cut The Rope in like a day, but I'm really jonesing for some more. What's next? I have both Angry Birds games (original finished, halloween getting there).

Since i got my iPad, a little more than a week ago, i literally consumed it by playing (Modern Combat 2, Plants vs Zombies, Godfinger, and today Age of Zombies and Linkoidz). Really, really happy about the purchase.

Oh, and everyone should take a look at Linkoidz (which is universal), it's really a blast to play. It received good reviews pretty much everywhere, and i enjoy it a lot.

It's easier to watch how it plays than to explain it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AvJXfNgiOg

Anyway, it is addicting and the gameplay is very satisfying.
