At 0.99 or 1.99 I will probably buy it to experience the graphics, but I'm not too excited to play another rail shooter. :/

From the screenshots in the preview thread not too long ago, it didn't even look all that great, and Carmack said he didn't get the 60fps framerate he talked about before either (hopefully it is at least a solid 30), so I'll still look out for it, but I'm a bit disappointed it didn't turn out like originally planned.

I can see how the Mutant Bash TV idea is disappointing to a lot of people, but having loved Doom Resurrection and being a sucker for games that squeeze some awesome graphics out of the iOS devices... Man I'm going to really enjoy this.

edit: @Minsc it doesn't quite hit the level of Epic Citadel but it looked pretty damn great in IGN's preview video (plus TouchArcade's screenshots were from the non-HD version, which is bound to not look great at retina resolution)

More like a small quick Rage spin-off, it's called 'Mutant Bash TV' (think Carmack called it 'Rage mobile' in that tweet cause that's just how everyone happens to know it atm). It's sort of a fast-paced Doom Resurrection style shooter but with more camera freedom and it seems to be way more fun and refined (though I liked Doom Resurrection a lot) and it has pretty damn amazing graphics, especially for a game that runs well on below-3GS devices.

edit: oh and Carmack did mention a few times in the past that there is still going to be a more full-fledged Rage game for iOS next year... but I'm not sure whether that idea just changed into Mutant Bash TV or whether we'll still see a bigger Rage game

Some producer from id told me that there is two games happening in the Rage world. Second one is gonna be a more full fledged iPad/iPhone thing, that will be way more substantial.

I think that "Rage mobile" is going to have two apps, one for older devices at 59p and a 3gs and up app at double the price, maybe that changed but unless they make the app universal now it's sort of required if you want to push limits.

Fortunately, it's dirt cheap regardless.

Dual-stick shooters never really picked my interest, but I liked Minigore. Is there any dual-stick shooter with some depth behind it instead of just trying for better scores?

Alive-4-Ever is a great mission based dual stick shooter.

Hmm, seems that the HD version of Rage (yes, apparently it's NOT called Mutant Bash TV after all) is compatible with the 3GS... I know it has better textures but I wonder if the framerate takes much of a hit on the 3GS (since it's probably targeted more towards iPhone 4 & iPad). Then again... If the app description explicitly says it's compatible with the 3GS... Maybe it runs great on it... WHAT TO DO?!

Pay the extra dollar and future-proof your game?

Did you actually have the game on your phone? If you've gotten it in the past but don't have it on your device, it looks like you're rebuying again but then it figures out that you already have it on your account. It also won't show up in your updates unless it is on your device.
Yep, it was in my puzzles folder on my games page, weird huh that it didn't show up in updates? I even played it right before rechecking the AppStore to see if that would update the database. Fixed now, but it is a rather curious thing.

Hmmmmmyeah but I'm not planning to switch to new iPhone any time soon and I'm quite sensitive to framerates.

Considering it's an id game, I can't see Carmack allowing it to run on the 3GS if the framerate wasn't acceptable. I'd probably hold off and wait for some reviews if I were in your position, though.

Good points. Actually, just saw someone at Toucharcade make a good point, reason why the HD version is also suitable for the 3GS is because the 3GS should be able to handle any decently coded iPhone 4/iPad game at such a (4x) reduced resolution. Come to think of it, there are several games that run at slower framerates on the iPhone 4 than they do on the 3GS due to the resolution increase. That explains why the HD version says it's compatible with the 3GS.

I'm happy I'll get to experience the HD one! (albeit at a lower res, but still, higher res textures and stuff!)

Sega is actually treating us well for one, freemium dungeon crawler / city builder sort of hybrid which is getting good feedback so far, called Kingom Conquest. It says that you can dungeon crawl with 3 other people online and the loot you find can be traded or used in your kingdom to upgrade, grow and become more powerful ect.

Ignore the US only thing as it's on the UK store also, but it's uploaded by sega cooperation, not sega. dunno why.

It's the closest will we have to phantasy star gameplay for now :D

Fuck this, I just deleted MW2, GOF2, got 1.8GB free and it still won't install. Just wiped a bunch of my saved games for no reason in the process. Piece of #$%^&ing crap...

edit: 1.9GB! That's what you need free to install Rage HD, be warned.

Galaxy on Fire 2 is soo much better than the first, and I liked the first one just you were kind of screwed if you bought the wrong stuff.

I tried Star Wars Force Unleahed since it's only 1 buck, it moves very slow even on iphone4 the models look almost psone quality but it is kind of fun for a buck.

I think Carmack said it was about 1.4GB installed. And IIRC, iOS requires about double the space to install an app.

Which sucks because I can't seem to free up more than 1.4GB on my iPhone 4. :(

Unless I'm going mad, I can't find the gyro controls in Rage, it's tilt or touch-screen only?! That seems like a mental omission though so I'll keep looking...

edit - No gyro confirmed. Tilt and touch are okay, but this game seems perfectly suited to gyro more than anything else. :(

Carmack just posted this on TouchArcade:

We wanted to make the HD version only for iPad and 4G, but there was no way to prevent a 3GS from buying it. We wanted a selector base either on ram > 128 or resolution > 480, but no such option exists. The 3GS will hitch a bit more playing the HD version, and the extra resolution doesn't matter much on it, so I recommend 3GS owners get the SD version unless they think they are going to upgrade soon. Cut down the monster download...

Damn it, now I need to know:
- just how much does it 'hitch'?
- Just how big is the graphical difference?
(perhaps that screenshot comparison was with the SD version running on a lower-than-3GS device where it disabled AA, bump maps and some game objects or perhaps that happens on any device with the SD version, I just don't know)

Well, if he's recommending 3GS owners to buy the cheaper SD version I would think the hitches are pretty significant.

And no gyro is disappointing.

Yeah, Carmack account at TA said it was supported, but then clarified:

"We aren't trying to use the gyros to make transform the camera. That might be a little amusing, but it smacking your neighbor as you play the game wouldn't be very effective. The gyros are just used to create the tilt angles, which is more precise than the accelerometers and doesn't suffer from cross axis coupling with movement of the device."

So spinning in circles in your office chair will do nothing... :(

yeah, also I think I was wrong about the graphical difference, the SD screenshot is from another angle (explaining the missing pillar) and as Carmack said, neither has AA (the HD version looks like it does due to the pixel density and the screenshots are scaled down).

So I'm now installing the SD version :D.

Don't forget to give us a feedback. :)

RAGE is up on the UK Appstore. Just grabbed the HD version.
Me too!

743mb download done in moments but my iPad is taking forever to backup :(

Edit: WTF, I can no longer install Samurai 2 because my iPad needs a newer firmware. Release it then you fucking muppets!

First impressions: definitely the most impressed I've ever been at first play with an iPhone game, excellent production values, great style (it's engaging, fun in its presentation and less generic than expected), super smooth framerate with absolutely gorgeous graphics and most importantly: it's instantly fun and addictive. Doom Resurrection was great but this is incomparable, it's fast, brutal and much more intuitive somehow and it just makes you wanna keep going and trying to do better.

Purely technically I'd say it is by far the most impressive thing on the platform, I'd almost say 'except for Epic Citadel' but the fact that this is an actual game with big levels, an excellent framerate and just so much polish makes it easily feel like a bigger technical accomplishment.

Picking up an iPad tonight, any game recommendations from the past 6 months? I own a 2nd Gen touch so I have a lot of the classics.

Planning on getting both Cave shooters, but if you like anything not Tower Defense related, let me know!

It's the closest will we have to phantasy star gameplay for now :D

This has got to be the most complicated farmville-ish game I've ever seen in my life.

There's two layers of building, you have your town, which is a large ~15x15 grid, with 4 kinds of resources distributed randomly, upon which there's dozens of structures you can build, to gather those resources, and build an army.

All the structures can be leveled up, and there's a ton of units you can purchase to create your army. Units are grouped by cards, of which you can recruit in numbers, so if your timber wolf card has 75 wolves, you can purchase 100s more to increase it's strength.

You can combine your creatures in to armies containing up to 4 cards. The cards level up, and you have to increase stats with points you get from the leveling.

The points you get from the dungeons can be used to purchase additional cards at random, of which there are common, uncommon, rare, and super rare cards. You get 1 card for 100 crystals, and there are different "decks" to choose to buy cards from.

The cards aren't all creatures, there's also equipment. On top of all that, you can sorta forge/create custom creatures and equipment.

Then there's the second layer of the map, the world screen, and holy crap. This is like another crazy thing, where you have to expand your influence by taking over the neutral lands bordering your castle. You need to send your armies to battle the lands, and if they win, you can control. Different armies travel at different speeds, so you have to take that in to consideration too.

Now, ready for it to get really complicated? Cause I'm not even through the training yet at this point (tutorial is a cake walk compared to the real game's training), and I'm scared to think of what is going to come next. There's a significant number of buttons I haven't even used including diplomacy.

Now as you control neutral territories, you eventually can take over citadels/towers, and those contain additional dungeons for you to challenge your hero of which there are three different ones to pick at the start (tank/warrior/mage). You can solo or play with 3 other people when doing dungeons. I tried soloing, and it seems the combat is pretty basic, but a little deep.

Using your shield to block attacks you actually need to face the proper direction to reduce the most damage it seems, and getting hit in the back results in extra damage.

This could possibly be the most complicated game I've ever seen on the iPhone, it's a weird mix of a Civ/CCG/WoW/farming/dungeon raiding, really, really weird mix.
