The iPhone 4 |OT|

I hope iOS5 starts more of a divergence between the iPhone and iPad. There should be more iPad-centric UI design for the future.

sigh. if all you need is navigation in areas where you have data access and don't want to spend any money (or justa tiny amount) then this is what you want:

http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/motionx-gps-drive/id328095974?mt=8

motion x GPS. not hard to find in the app store.

99 cents for 30 days should cover your road trip. you don't need to pay afterward unless you head out on the road again.

if you're gonna drive in another country or in backwoods areas get one of the pricier solutions.
Mapquest app is really good and it's free...

I don't know. I think the new GPU is going to make for a much more fluid experience with the 960x640 display. Things still don't always animate smoothly for me.

Also, the CPU is seemingly the bottleneck for internet browsing on the iPhone 4. Load times are significantly faster when my 4 is tethered to my MBP than when browsing in Safari on the iPhone 4.

This, plus HSPA+/LTE, which will hopefully make huge improvements in the internet browsing speeds, are what excite me about my next iPhone (which won't be an iPhone 5).

Well I upgraded from my 3GS to a 4 and it's so much better!
I can definitely wait a few years for a 5 now unless it is leaps ahead of the 4.

The screen on the 4 is stunning... I can't put it down! Beautiful styling, beautiful. And the camera is a big improvement.

*thumbs up*

Incidentally, i'm in Taiwan at the moment. iPhone 4s EVERYWHERE. There is a small amount of me noticing them more than other mobiles, but it seems like a good half of smart phones I see are an iPhone model of some sort. And a good portion of those with those silly rubber cases with rabbit ears on them. Oh you cute Asians, you.

Anyone know whether the iPhone 4 or 5 will ever get "swype" typing (predictive typing where you can just move your fingers smoothly across keys) or voice-to-text ? I have to say that these features on my friends' Android phones are VERY appealing. Are they patented or something?

Maybe regarding patents, but Apple would have to make their keyboard support those modes as they don't allow 3rd party options to replace.

I doubt Swype style will come but I am surprised there isn't voice to text.

The no voice to text is what bugs me, swype is a beautiful thing though

Expect Swype to never happen (I do at least), but there's been a lot of rumors about Apple and Nuance so voice to text is possible for the iOS 5.

I paid the Apple Store on 14th St. in NYC a visit today to swap out my iPhone for a new one because of a stuck sleep button (fucking FINALLY!). On my way out I finally snagged a PixelSkin HD case and I love the hell out of it.

The purported iPhone 5 case that gained popularity over the last few days has been removed from trading site Alibaba. The case obviously brought a large amount of attention to its manufacter so we don’t think the case was removed by choice. Prior to the iPad 2′s official announcement in March, many iPad 2 cases found on Alibaba revealed key features like its thinner design and FaceTime video cameras.

Those iPad 2 cases ended up being removed from Alibaba with the help of Apple’s legal team.
We’re not going to say for sure that Apple was behind the removal of the above iPhone 5 case, but it makes sense. Adding evidence to the legitimacy of this iPhone 5 case are purported iPhone 5 camera parts. These camera parts demonstrate a relocated LED camera flash, which is also noted on the above iPhone 5 case sample image.

Hmm..
And now a back plate matching that case surfaces from somewhere else (another Chinese site):

I don't think removig a picture constitutes any adde legitimacy these days.

Think about it, what would be the best way to make your fake look more real? That's right, rake it down a few days later.

I just found out that I am no longer under contract with T-mobile and I really want to get an Iphone should I hold out and wait for the Iphone 5? should I wait until T-mobile is fully integrated into AT&T??

Might as well, since next one will be out in September and you'll be under contract for 2-years.

Here's a generic iPhone GPS question.

I was always under the impression that the GPS worked independently of the Cell-tower/wifi info, and the assisted part was there to help if it was present.

However, since travelling abroad, I've removed my sim card, and the GPS seems to not work at all. I load up google maps (yeah, I know it needs an internet connection to download maps), but when I take it off wifi, I thought that it would still find my GPS location via GPS, and just not load maps. However, when I do that, I just get a response from the maps app that cell-tower was not found, and thus I can't find location.

Why does this matter? Because it means I can't use my iPhone 3G to capture location data information for my photos.

So do I HAVE to have some cell-tower info to even get the gps to work?

Are you using an app to track GPS? Maybe you could just do a test run.

I think I've heard that those GPS navigation apps work without data, but I'm not sure if that's true.

Yeah, the expensive GPS apps store all the maps, etc in the app and don't really download anything using data. I use Navigon and it only uses my data to do searches for specific locations using Google. Even if you have cell/data service, the area you're in might not get good GPS signal (which was the case for me in some locations within Arizona this month).

Why are leaked photos in the modern era STILL BLURRY?!?!

Also, the iPhone 5 looking nearly identical to the iPhone 4 is a given. They'll keep the design at least 2-3 generations. What's more interesting is that they may be making the screen bigger by making the screen go right to the edge.

If they go 4" I'm back in. I loved my iPhone4 but have a nasty habit of jumping around the tech releases so currently am on Android. The 4.3" I have now is nice, but slightly too big in some cases for one handed use; going back to 3.5" again (yes, I've done this before) is something I don't really want to do.

I think if they go 4" for the future and stick to 4", but with the same form factor as the iPhone 4, that's probably the ideal situation. More screen real estate but same physical space in pocket.

Were there expectations that it would be supported?

I think the only reason it would be expected is because the 3GS is still being sold new. I'm all for dropping support of older hardware, but you can't call a something "legacy" when you can go out and buy it on contract right now.

In 2 weeks, there will be another thread titled, "Apple upgrades leave bitter taste."

To be fair, that was regarding computers that haven't been sold for 2-3+ years.

No, not really. If there is WiFi networks available (even if you aren't connected to it), the iPhone can use that instead. Also, and I'm not sure on this, but if you get the GPS position before removing the sim card/leaving the wifi network area, the gps tracking should continue to work until it's turned off.

Sidenote, taking out the sim disables facetime. :/

So rumor is that iOS5 is not compatible with iPhone 3GS. You will need a iPhone 4 to get the update.

the 3gs by all means is nearly on par with the iphone 4 in performance and even in some cases out performs it due to the lower res screen. If iOS 5 is that big of a RAM hog, then I'm not sure if i want it all anyway. (I have an iphone 4)

The 4 really wasn't much in terms of a leap over the 3gs in performance. 3G -> 3GS on the other hand was huge.

That,s what I thought, but while I can find my position when I use my home wifi, when I turn it off, I get a 'cannot find location'. It's like without the sim, the gps simply never works. It's entirely possible that my location is not conducive to gps location (Taipei). I didn't think of that, so might try in south Taiwan for more info.

Normally, when off cell range, even google maps will find location, just not draw the maps.

Perhaps they don't want to bother making low-res versions of the OS anymore. Makes sense.

I guess force fragmentation is better than natural fragmentation when it comes to deprecating devices.

Its smart design when you can make an OS that can run well on the iPhone 4 and whatever is in the next one. I mean, its not like the iPhone 4 isn't a very capable device. I still have not seen anything the iPad 2 can do that is far and away better than the iPhone 4.

I'm not gonna be happy if iOS 5 doesn't run well on the iPhone 4.

It definitely should though.
After seeing how super smooth WP7 is on that level of hardware (or lower, really) it will be unacceptable to see performance degradation with ios5.

Indeed.

I'm looking forward to it (as long as there are new notifications).

l don't think Apple would risk iOS 5 not running well on the iPhone4 seeing as it will probably be out before the iPhone5, would probably be bad for business if it didn't run well. But either way l'm sure it will run just fine.

Has anyone here tried the Rebel Sim Card for unlocking? I'll be moving to the UK in 2 months and read about it working with 4.10.01 without jail breaking.

Using WP7 for a technical benchmark is misguided. There's very little graphical assets being manipulated compared to iOS.

Now that I purchased some things on the app store (via PC) it is asking for my credit card info on my iphone (it imported it all, minus the security code) when I'm trying to download free apps. Is there any way around this? I don't like having this info on my phone.
Anyone? Haven't dled an app since this became an issue...

Ipad 2 & android phone vs IPAD 2 & Iphone 4/5 ? What do I gain with sticking with the apple hardware vs. getting a mix of both? The main reason I'm thinking of getting the android phone is because I'll save over $300 per year from a cheaper plan.
