Ipad 2 & android phone vs IPAD 2 & Iphone 4/5 ? What do I gain with sticking with the apple hardware vs. getting a mix of both? The main reason I'm thinking of getting the android phone is because I'll save over $300 per year from a cheaper plan.
If you don't have an iPhone, you don't have an iPhone.

If you buy a lot of universal apps then getting an iphone would be a benefit; with an ipad and android you might be buying a lot of stuff twice. Tbh there's not a lot of push either way (I have an ipad and iphone but a mate has an ipad and android and we are both quite happy with the choice).

A friend of mine just got a new home page theme for his iPhone, it's freaking me the fuck out!

Given the usual time between versions, when can we expect the iPhone 5?

yeah, September-ish. this is a weird year. they're typically in June but Apple has said that their WWDC event keynote is gonna be software only, implying no iphone hardware reveal as in previous years.

edit:

oh look... another oversized virtual flip clock... *twitch*

Well they haven't officially said anything. It's just well-connected reporters that have floated this story.

yes, correct. the september date is definitely from reporters and "sources".

but the WWDC keynote focus is pretty clear. their PR was about as close as Apple gets to showing their hand. no hardware announcement in June.

Their PR for WWDC never had indicated hardware announcements though. The lack of an iOS 5 event recently was probably more telling. They must be really confident in supply to do such a late release though--to meet the holiday demand in all major countries so soon after launch (we're nearly 3 months into iPad 2's launch, and it's still not the easiest to get).

I really don't see the problem with the current scheduling. There is a huge rush at launch, and another huge rush 5-6 months later during the holidays (and margins have increased by then by putting the iPhone hardware in iPods and Apple TVs).

Screw Apple, and screw iTunes, and screw the iPhone.

iPhone 3GS here, can't be bothered to search for the other thread.

EVERY TIME I INSTALL A STUPID IPHONE UPDATE IT BRICKS THE FUCKING THING AND I HAVE TO DO RESTORE.

And now even restore won't work.

Wow that sucks dude. Sorry. Maybe take it to the Genius Bar?

I hope the next iPhone has some sort of super amoled action. Res is one thing but I played with a Droid Charge today and the colors on that screen are unbelievably vibrant and delicious. It all pops.

No thanks, keep that shitty amoled away.

screw iTunes
I concur with this. Back when I bought an iPod Mini in 04 iTunes was a joy. Now, it's a bloated piece of crap. I would appreciate another way of syncing my iPhone.

If reviews of the Droid Charge and Samsung Infuse are any indication, SAMOLED tech has fixed all the problems associated with the typical AMOLED screens (oversaturated colors, grainy look, etc.). With the benefits it brings to battery life, weight, and thinnness, there is no reason NOT to want one in the new iPhone.

Finally done getting my phone back in order.

I downloaded instagram, but I thought it was a photo filter app. Turns out it's to also share photos. I don't want to upload the photos. Any good filter app?

Also, the Charge uses SAMOLED Plus, I'd like it in more phones as well.

Hipstamatic?

Yeah so my iPhone BRICKED today. It was a week old! The screen just fuzzed out. Guy at the Verizon store said he's never seen an iPhone do that before. Anyway, thank god for iTunes seemingly having all of my contacts, photos, apps, and ringtones... I had no idea iTunes backed that shit up for me. They even had my text message convos! Simultaneously awesome and creepy.

Yeah I love that. That's why I have no worries enabling the "delete all data after 10 passcode tries" option.

Is apple still selling unlocked phones either online or in store?
If you're in Canada or a zillion other places, like the UK or even China. But not in the US--you can only buy off-contract phones. But there is an unlock out.

Camera+ is hands down the best camera app for the iPhone.

Ah there's drawbacks to that tech? I figured there had to be a catch to the nice looking colors.
Until very, very recently the AMOLED displays have had a pixel arrangement that makes text and some pics look a little grainy (called pen tile). But this is supposed to be completely fixed in the new super AMOLED plus screens. I have not seen one in person.

Oh and AMOLED is also harder to see in sunlight compared to LCD. And it only really saves power compared to LCD when dsplaying mostly black images. But that oled contrast is still super good looking.

I made the switch! Got my very first iPhone today.

iPhone 4 16gig Black on Verizon. Loving this. I used to have a Droid, which I also loved...but this is just so slick. I've had an iPod Touch for years so I know the UI, but any recent apps I should be checking out? Do we have a separate thread for that?

My walmart sells iPhones, I want to upgrade to an iPhone 4 but does anyone know if they offer the same rates as the verizon online? I get a 15% from my company, will walmart accept that? i have a bunch of walmart gift cards that I want to waste.

I'm not gonna be happy if iOS 5 doesn't run well on the iPhone 4.

It definitely should though.

Well devs are testing iOS 5 on phones already, so I'm guessing it's going to run pretty well.

How sturdy is the screen with invisible shield? I bought a rocketfish universal mount and the damn thing fell off the car vent. No visible scratches or anything, I hope the internal isn't damaged. Are there any good car mounts that would fit with my Iluv case?

I'm a little worried about performance going backwards on A4 devices, particularly as an iPad 1 user. Hopefully Apple don't make the iOS 4 on 3G mistake again.

If your on the go like me, and have Netflix, get yourself the Netflix app. Works great.

Check it for the Free App of the day and sales. Off the top of my head: Infinity Blade, S&S, Plants vs. Zombies, Canabalt, Civ Rev, Tunein Radio (if you still like terrestrial radio), Osmos, Mirror's Edge, Pandora, Gravity Hook. There's more, I just don't have my phone with me.

Hopefully that is the exception and not the norm. Most Apple updates actually improve performance and hopefully iOS5 does that and blows us away with a kickass new notification system.

The opposite is true.

edit: Actually, i was wrong!

What are good apps for this?
As I mentioned before: If you have Netflix then the Netflix app is great if you're on the go. MotionX GPS is a very good GPS navigation app. There are some good weather apps, but I haven't read of one that isn't connected to realtime radar and doesn't crash. I'd like to use Skype, but I hear that crashes.

Unfortunately, most of the apps on smartphones are games. I'd like to see more untility apps for day to day use. Like a realtime news app with live streaming video. For example, NHK's app is excellent. But I don't work in Kyoto anymore. :(

Is that better than TomTom? What's a good flashlight one? Is there one that also does flashes?

IMO, almost any navi app with voice turn by turn instructions are just as good, if not better than TT. You have to pay for a monthly subscription for the one I mentioned though. But, it uses traffic and weather to tell you about the road conditions ahead.

As for flashlight apps. I just use my screen as it gives off quite a bit of light by itself.

How much power does it use when NOT looking at blacks? I always hear of people forcing themselves to invert colors (looking at pages with white on black) just to save battery life. iPhone seems to still handle battery life better even when powering a high res IPS LCD display without having to resort to changes in experience.
