The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC Spoiler thread

Bahahah it's true. I do post in Ace Attorney GAF sometimes. Gaming side in general is scary ;_;

I've been avoiding Ace Attorney GAF because I don't have a 3DS so I can't play Dual Destines ;__;

To carry out that experiment you would have to take a group of kids without mothers and fathers with a roughly (or exact) 50/50 male to female ratio, keep them all on a schedule, and treat them exactly the same regarding gender. Wait... that sounds like a military boarding school. More specifically, the one that Ellie attended. The biological urge thing? I don't think that's set until they get the biological urge to reproduce ( 11-13 ), but by then, the experiment would already be complete.

I guess when it comes down to it in that situation, who do you like being around more? Do they happen to be a boy or a girl? It doesn't really matter. Ellie didn't have any friends except for Riley. I can't say what the split of homosexual/heterosexual/bisexual individuals would be in such a cohesive experiment. But, I would bet it would either be a 3 way tie or bisexuals would be the majority. Maybe a tad off topic, maybe this will turn the thread into a bad direction.

I think considering the circumstances of both girls growing up and their relationship to each other pre-DLC, this outcome is nothing but expected.

I doubt the rate of homosexual/bisexual would be that high. Kiss seemed natural though. Like you said Riley was pretty much Ellies only friend her age. She cared for her a lot and didn't want her to leave. When Riley almost left her is imo when Ellie realized she had a crush on Riley.

... what. the. fffffffffffffuuuuuuu?

wtf is this seriously

Not gonna lie, unlike TLOU where I enjoyed most encounters, I found the ones in this game too tedious. I loved all the Riley and Ellie moments. My wife enjoyed them fucking around in the Halloween shop.

The last scenes animations and stuff (I know was CG) was great.

Lastly, someone needs to get screenshots or make gifs of the amazing global illumination of this game.

I didn't enjoy the encounters in the DLC much either. Loved them in the main game though.

The lightning at the Merry Go round and near the TVs during the water gun fight was amazing

Yes, the lighting in this game is nuts. It never ceases to amaze me. Even the puddle reflections were full on reflections of everything in the scene. Not just crappy cube maps. I still think the GI (even if approximated in some cases) is amazing. No other console game has real time GI, or something, that at least looks like real time GI.

Wow. Incredible.

They outdid themselves in the art department. The thing about playing ND games is that, you really feel like you are playing a game crafted by absolute love. They really care about everything and it never feels like a "cash in". Wonderful.

And I can't believe people are discussing that kiss so much. Me and my gf saw it and were like, "Oh. Aw". Not that big of a deal...

Hmmm, fair enough. I just felt that surely at some point of her childhood she would realise that she once had a father and a mother, which will immediately distort a child's understanding of how love/sexuality naturally operates and thus distort the fairness of the experiment in the favour of heterosexuality.

I knew people would react to the kiss this way.
lol
Mind expanding on that? This response would fit more if it was vehemently negative. What I see here is a combination of surprise, expectance, and acceptance. Only one person has said anything that could even be conveyed as negative, and he had a sort of valid point about trope subversions.

Yeah, it could be because there was never much of a flow to them, it could be because of the severe lack of weapons. They did spice it up near the end though. The Ellie vs Clicker vs Hunter fight was just what the DLC needed to stave everyone off gameplay wise. The MerryGoRound was just... My eyes were assaulted with gorgeous.

I'm not the only person who just can not stand to see the sight of Ellie getting her throat bit off right? I mute my receiver and close my eyes almost every time I see it happen. The combination of the suddenness, that absolutely wretched sound, and the sight of a character I actually care about dying in such a foul way just gets to me. It's so disturbing to me I go out of my way to die as little as possible, at the cost of experimenting even.

Oh man it's incredible ;_;

Anyway, I'm probably almost done with the DLC, I just got to the dancing / kiss section?

I honestly think this DLC is incredible. I really love how genuine the relationship is between Ellie and Riley. I'm glad they decided to do more with Ellie's backstory as opposed to something with Joel. I love the way they worked in the section after the science building injury to the main plot. Animations are beautiful as always. I'll be back when I finish.

ur weird. Or maybe I am.
I jumped into the pool of water that had all the electricity in it like two or three time :lol

I remember when I played the Winter Section for the first time I was super surprised that they actually did the death animations for Ellie.

You know. There's a spoiler free OT :P

But yeah I loved the DLC. Reminded me why TLoU is my GOTY and perhaps even Game of The Generation.

I think I'm just tired of the combat in TLOU. I started playing through the campaign a few days ago and couldn't make it very far before losing interest. Thankfully the DLC didn't have a lot of combat.

As far as the kiss is concerned, all signs pointed to it being romantic and the feeling between Ellie and Riley. Maybe Valentine's day painted my perception.

I'm going to miss Ellie but I'm not sure there is anything left to be told.

Alrighty, so I just finished. Lawdy loo what a ride.

I knew how it was going to end, but it still packed a punch. Wow. I...that was ten times better than I ever could have hoped for.

I loved Riley's monologue at the end, and even how Ellie ends up using that line later on in the actual game. Animations were amazing and the score was on point as usual.

I certainly hope they do more like that.

Left behind felt like some outstanding episodes from a TV series.
Those with minimal plot progression but lots of character building episode like "Fly" episode in breaking bad (one of my favored episode of the show).
They get to do some playful and experimental stuff, I hope ND do more of these.

That last combat encounter was fucking awful. Oh hey you made it to the door, here's another wave of Davids goons! Finished some of them off? Here's some infected to add insult to injury!

I haven't been this annoyed by NDs encounter design since the stupid sandstorm section with Marlowes men in Uncharted 3. Ugh.

It was annoying but I don't think it was that bad, especially the second part because the second wave of David's men and Infected sort of came in near each other. At that point, I was able to lure the Infected towards the second wave of survivors and the problem sort of solved itself.

I agree that it was weird having another wave of enemies come in when you reached the door though. Should have done a better job with that.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree it's romantic, I'm just saying that it's something that tends to happen between girls of that age and isn't an indication of what their sexual orientation will be as adults. You can't just state as fact that Ellie is gay because she kissed a girl when she was 14.
Like I said I know several examples of this irl as do many people.

This. It can be a loving kiss without making any statement about sexual orientation, it simply reflects the emotions of the moment.

Granted, it sounds like the comics might bring some context to the situation to back up an alternate view, but I haven't read them and I expect many others won't have either.

It's really weird to see people having so many issues with this. I used the infected to kill the humans and then killed all 4 infected with a molotov, it took less than a minute. I really wonder how people approach the encounters in this game.
It gives you so many options to tackle your enemies, I never get tired of that cat and mouse game with enemies and exploring different options to beat each encounter.
Different strokes I guess.

I didn't have any issue with the difficulty, I did the exact same thing as you. I just really don't like defend the position sections and being baited like that to go to a poorly defended position just to have a wave of enemies appear out of thin air up top.

I was just in a strange position - the enemies came from both sides before the infected even showed up. I think I had to work my way back upstairs for them to spawn? Plus as I thought it was the final encounter I'd used up all my ammo, so was screwed.

Also felt super old school, like Doom - hit switch, spawn enemies. TLoU did it too but it felt a little more organic there IMO

For the trophies, are the 'optional conversations' the recordings, or do you need to do certain dialogue trees with Riley?

So she's gay?

You have the stairs behind you and a room to your right, I didn't feel that the game was trapping me in a corner.
During most of the game you almost always have the element of surprise on your side, enemies are usually not aware of your presence and you get the jump on them so these situations work well as a change of pace for me.
But I'm watching IGN's spoilercast right now and Miller is going on about how hard that encounter was and how it almost made him throw his controller and I'm like "OK whatever".

So she's gay?

Read the thread?

So, I was browsing Reddit today and noticed a few posts about Ellen Page announcing she was gay. I thought it was weird, especially with all the buzz going around about Ellie in Left Behind, and well the obvious similarities between them.

A lot of the combat in TLOU in my opinion is a total mindgame, esp when you play the first time. There are tons of people who say they felt overwhelmed and that the combat had you pitted against way too many enemies, but in reality there are always less than ten enemies to be aware of at any given time. The average is probably 6 or less. I was reminded of that when listening to the Beyond Left Behind Spoilercast when Greg was talking about the final section. There really weren't that many dudes.

There were multiple times when I was sure the place was swarming with hunters, only to be surprised in later playthroughs just how few there actually where.

I didnt say I was trapped in a corner. I said that the game puts you in a poor position with everyone shooting at you from up top immediately. Yes I'm well aware of the stairs and the room with the boxes that leads up top. I guess I wasn't interested in a change of pace after just dealing with an encounter and reaching Joel.

That area does put you in the most disadvantageous spot. Luckily, it's easy to break line of sight and get the hunters into "searching mode", which is when I get the most kills in by stabbing from behind.

Good DLC. I liked that they managed to implement human vs. infected encounters, and the story-related stuff was pretty gripping. Still, I feel the DLC ended right when it was really getting interesting, and the gameplay overall felt like a main campaign outtake. Also, PS4 has truly spoiled me when it comes to graphics now; felt this game was quite ugly, hehe.

I've been playing with PS4 level visuals on PC for years and the last word that would occur to me to describe TLOU is ugly.

Wonderful DLC as expected and an amazing complement to the full game. I didn't even expect the scenes with Riley to be juxtaposed with that gap leading to Winter in the full game that we never got to see. Just brilliant execution. My brother and I were just amazed at how much chemistry Ellie had with Riley and how much of depth of their relationship was shown in such a short piece. The ending, as expected was poignant. Really looking forwards to more DLC.

Probably yeah, although the unlikely possibility of bisexuality exists. The friendly peck, too young to be sure of her sexuality, she only had riley as a friend so it's natural and the it's different in the apocalypse statements are not exactly strong arguments against it. Still, it doesn't matter. Her sexuality is not what defines her, which is not something you can say about many other attempts to make a LGBT character.
Indeed. It's funny but that one moment is just another facet to her character. It's quite amazing what Naughty Dog have been able to accomplish with that considering how easy it is to have characters become a caricature by some defining trait. Not with Ellie. She might just be the most well realised videogame character I've had the pleasure of knowing.

Seeing it's released on Valentine's Day, if there isn't a lesbo scene I'll be disappointed.

Ugh, I hope not. Leave my sisterly teenage bonding alone!!!! Also I think Riley's voice just makes her sound like a mature teen. She is older than Ellie right?

You're going to be disappointed.

So will I

Um they're 14??

YALL DIDNT WANT TO BELIEVE

LOL

My boyfriend hasn't played Left Behind yet, and he read about Ellen Page being gay this morning. He then jokingly said "Ellie and Riley as a couple confirmed!!". He has absolutely no idea what happens in the DLC, which he is going to play now.

I can't wait to see his face when the kiss happens hahahaha

that will be fun to watch :D

Left Behind was phenomenal. I love how the Ellie and Riley segments were basically just them being kids, leaving combat out until the very end. It felt really natural and reminded me of what I was like when I was younger. It was really unexpected and it really brought something special to The Last of Us.

Anyway, I know people keep posting photobooth pictures, but I really liked this one. The eye detail is insane.

I have to say I'm surprised to see so many people coming to the conclusion that Ellie is lesbian. She loves Riley, yeah, but I don't think the implication was that they would have been *lovers*, just that at that point she was so overcome with joy, the mood was right and it felt right. It was sweet, but just her emotions getting the better of her.

Awkward teens gonna awkward teen, yo.

EDIT: Welp, I've just listened to IGN's spoiler cast with the creators, and they say Ellie *is* attracted to Riley. Had I known that was the intention, I would have been a little more surprised at the time.

Did anyone else feel some emotion when Ellie got on the merry go round and the music started playing? Phenomenal music, so much heart put into it. I really can't wait to play through this again on a lower difficulty since I played through survivor already. I will find every collectable this time.

Probably yeah, although the unlikely possibility of bisexuality exists.

curious as to why you label it "unlikely".

Ellie has shown interest in the male form before, also went as far as recognising the horse riding guy has "very attractive". It just seems to me that she's a kid without preconceived ideas of sexuality and reacts to what she feels at the moment

Her sexuality is not what defines her, which is not something you can say about many other attempts to make a LGBT character.

with this i agree

nah, it was cute.

edit:

man everyone in that ellen page thread is being a dick. because folks made the obvious reference that she looks like ellie in TLOU and someone replies 'DLC spoiler', without even knowing it is spoilers of anykind. and now people are trying to call eachother out that they spoiled TLOU and etc.

ugh what a mess :(

Just finished it. I started on survivor so I had no resources and got stuck a couple of times, mainly during the first encounter with the stalkers and then during the final fight.

It was great that they actually evolved the gameplay somewhat. There was a missed opportunity in the actual game with the lack of three-way encounters -- and this DLC pulled it off. The Ellie/Riley sections were fantastic too, really enjoyed their interactions, and again ND's world/level design and attention to detail was on point.

Probably will give this a rest for now, but I'll go back to gather the remaining trophies on a lower difficulty eventually.

The design is to have them fight each other, and it was awesome. You throw a bottle or something and alert the infected and eatchyhr mayhem. The encounters in this game were grand fun and it had me starting a new game of the main story right after.
