The Last of Us (Naughty Dog): Hold One Second

I'm not sure, but there HAS to be a story here. This character looks NOTHING like Ashley Johnson and everything like Ellen Page, and her name is Ellie! Come on!

Well, it's all 'in-engine', which probably means like Uncharted in-engine. Regardless, it's definitely not CG. If you're more worried about the lack of showing gameplay you should be more specific :p

That's what I mentioned earlier after I came down from the HOLY FUCKING SHIT on first sight: does it have the good gameplay to back this good attractive feeling this trailer gives me (that UC didnt)? How scripted will it be? How much resource management and story-telling via encounters and level design will exist? Will there be elements of "hunger" and equipment upkeep or customization? Time will tell.

Here's the original Uncharted trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01qqdtzmF-E

That's very much what the series turned into. It's heavy on the action with a few platforming sections. So, why are people so unwilling to believe that this trailer is also meant to give an indication of the tone and style that they're going for?

Good point...even the animations very much mimic the series to the tee.

Hope we get more info on this game soon enough..

Also what's the deal with everyone calling these dudes zombies? They are infected but clearly not in the traditional sense. Considering its fungus based it might have been an airborne virus. One of the dudes clearly has mushrooms popping out of his head and one of the other dudes was carrying ammo. They seemed to be aggressive scavengers (like ants) and not your traditional mindless flesh eating mob..

NAUGHTY DOG. YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK. DO NOT CHANGE ELLEN PAGE. DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT CHANGE HER. NOT EVEN IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT.

This should be in the OP and every single thread about this game henceforth.

I second this! Love the girl's design so much. Also don't change her clothing!

I've posted that a couple pages ago.
Funny you bring up Resistence series. I felt about the theme of that series similar to the way I do about this. WWII crossed with Alien fps two incredibly overused themes...it sounds like something created in a focus group with a bunch of suits.

This will be much better than Resistance of course, but I just wish the game didn't have the infected zombie things. I'd rather just battle with crazy post apoc gangs and such.

Completely agree, i'll be an Ellen Page warrior from now till the day it releases.

If they were formerly human, their free will has been compromised, and they are aggressive towards other humans, they are essentially zombies. Doesn't matter if it's Haitian voodoo or viral/fungal infection, their behavior is sufficiently zombie-like to call them zombies. Of course this claim is based on only what we've seen. They might turn out to have hive-mind intelligence or even individual intelligence.

I feel like the only reason people really have a problem with this classification is because they're reacting defensively to the people who are mad that it's "another zombie game."

It's funny. I don't really care about Ellen Paige much at all, but I really like the character design. It seems like it fits, and her description matches her face to me.

I vastly prefer an original take on worldwide infection to another game with boring post apocalyptic gangs. Survival horror is the key here.

It amazes me when people say Uncharted doesn't have good gameplay.

Lost all credibility.

Eh, I don't know the trailer seemed to show that they behave exactly like that, running around simply looking for a victim to latch onto. But it looks like there will be different types of threats to deal with in the game, the mindless fungal people grabbing on to you like traditional zombies, and the survivor scavengers that are basically human like you, so it should break up the monotony.

Just watched the trailer again. No wai this is how the is actually going to look on ps3. Lighting and shadows are way too good to be real time. UC3 is not even close to that level of detail and clarity. UC 2 and 3 also have better quality settings for various things in cutscenes, so don't expect game to look quite this amazing.
Maybe if it was also coming to PC i could believe that this is how the game looks with all the quality settings at 11.

Not to say that it's not going to look amazing tho :)

Well I look at it like the Drake walking in the desert near the plane crash trailer. It's a cutscene using the game engine, which means it looks a bit better than the gameplay, but you can kinda gauge what it'll look like. It's not like it's CG though.

I was wrong you were right. Watched it again and they bursted in and started eating the scavangers on the floor. Ooh well. I'm still totally hyped. I'm all for an amazing zombie game. We've yet tot have one that really fully gets it.

Yeah, UC stuff is usually fairly well representative for what to expect, but quality settings are noticeably higher in cutscenes.
Like playing BF3 on medium/high settings compared to ultra. Looks pretty much the same on quick glance but if you look closer, there is a fair difference.

Actually looks very similar to Uncharted 3 IMO

Naughty Dog use identical assets in cutscenes and real time, so what exactly is the difference you're referring to?

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague.
eh, i'm interested as long as it's more valve-y and less naughty dog-y

I am betting actual gameplay with look pretty damn close to what was shown in the trailer. But if other games from Naughty Dog are any indication, I bet it will be similar to the Uncharted games how they have separate models for cut-scenes that are a little more higher res compared to the playable in-game counterpart.

Elaborate.

well PS3 just pulled 900k units in November; the market right now is dominated by mature rated gore fests which seem to do quite well. Zombie games in particular are on a hot streak.

This is utilizing one of Sony's most visible development studios with their visual capacity in a genre that is extremely popular catered toward the audience that seems to be buying games at the moment.

To me, this has a much better chance at 'breaking out' than Uncharted ever did.

High quality Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=om9v0w0H70s

Damn, it was a really nice trailer. The big surprise and wildcard was really Naughty Dog, and now I'm fascinated and want to know a lot more. If it's release date is another two years from now (which it usually inevitably is) then I'm going to be disappointed.

There's been similar mentor + student / parent + son, in post-apoc world templates in movies.

The Road
Stakeland (awesome movie that only made $20,000 in the US)

I don't think it's been done in games before, where the dynamic is more male + dame in distress (RE escort missions). Looking forward to this shit!

That looked fucking awesome! Naughty Dog are truly gods.

Is it first or third person though, have they mentioned anything about that? I hope you get to play as the girl too, those segments could be more survival horror-ish as you're physically weaker.

What's the difference?
Valve locks you in a room during exposition while you can still dick around. Naughty Dog shows you a high quality in engine cut scene. Valve develops in Valve time and Naughty Dog takes 2 years. Other than that I have no clue. Both are fantastic studios that create great games with fantastic characters and story telling.
