The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild | Review Thread

I'll find that hard to believe.

No game with 'dungeons', as we've come to understand them, quite rivals Twilight Princess' dungeons. If the SHRINES are better, and there are like 100+ of them, that's quite an achievement.

Compared to DS Zeldas and pre-OOT ones that wouldn't surprise me

But I feel that quote implies that those reviewers prefer the structure of 100+ shrines rather than a few big ones, I guess they don't really value the quality of Zelda's dungeons

Before we embark on the journey that is Breath of the wild, let us all appreciate....

....What a great fucking game Skyward Sword is.

Ancient cistern

The dessert area

Time switch stones

Girahim

Demise

ANCIENT CISTERN

Pheeeeew

DAT ending, tear jerker.

DAT soundtrack, amazing.

Let the Zelda cycle come into effect. Let us join hands and love skyward sword.
Better than Twilight Princess but nah, this doesn't work like that i can't see any 3D Zelda after Wind Waker as a true Classic. ZElda has such a high pedigree, its the single most ambitious motion controlled game however.

Sorry if this has already been answered but I don't want to read 112 pages, but how is the Wii U version of this game? I cancelled my Switch pre-order and I'm #notashamed.

You don't need to be ashamed, per se, but you are playing the inferior version of a masterpiece that may have a helpful patch, which is probably still a masterpiece. Enjoy.

I'm so hyped for the Nintendo Switch midnight launch tonight that I'm watching this movie to continue the hype:

I haven't been this excited for a Nintendo system launch since the original NES in 1985!

Now we need BOTW shopped into this in Mario 3's place

FUCK no

Let's all remember:

Overlong tutorial

Going to the same dungeon twice

Escort missions

Fighting that toe monster three times

Tadtones

Fi spoiling puzzles

The first orchestrated zelda sound track having 2 good songs

I will DIE before I let the "Zelda cycle" take hold of this trash game*.

*a trash zelda game is still better than 90% of other franchises

Cross posting from the OT.

Everyone should listen to the new bonus episode of the Waypoint Podcast Austin Walker put up today. You can also just read the write up here

https://waypoint.vice.com/en_us/article/breath-of-the-wild-is-the-zelda-adventure-ive-always-wanted

Great read/listen. He effortlessly conveys EXACTLY what I've been feeling since I started playing Breath of the Wild.

Is he just reading the article he put up earlier, or is there more there?

I was thinking of that Zam review that got bagged on earlier today, and after thinking more about it, the dude comes off as the kind of person upset that Pink Floyd didn't make anothe The Wall, or that Led Zepplin or the Beatles sound so different across their existence.

Nothing the person said is invalid, but it just seemed to be from the perspective that they wanted another OOT or WW, and were very unhappy that this game isn't that at all. Which is all fine, but also seems to miss a lot. If we get so fixed in to how we want/expect things to be, we make it harder to be open to change.

I think, with Zelda, I was heartened when Gerstmann said the game may have changed too much, and then the 8-4 guys and Steve Lin mentioned to him that Aonuma was going to for a return to the original Zelda, and Jeff, oh, I can see that, I can get that. It all clicked that I knew I'd be okay with this and the massive changes.

Gamers chide Nintendo so much for not shaking it up often enough, and now when they do depart and go out make something different it makes sense that there will be a group of folks left behind. The people who just couldn't get in to Revolver and wish the Beatles had stayed more Rubber Soul and earlier. Artists should be allowed the room to try and do different things, even if they are wildly different, and we should try to judge each piece separate from the last.

Yeah this gets hard with consumer goods like games that cross mediums and are part product and part art etc, but I think we should celebrate change/innovation/newness not for their own sake, but because often they force people to try and do different things and even if they fail to achieve their goal at least they made the attempt and can learn from it. If we cling too tightly to tropes, or ways of the past etc, we will tend to lose sight of what the future can be.

lol, Zelda got inspired from a decade of open world games (from Assassin's Creed to The Witcher 3 basically) and made a great mix out of this genre to fit the sense of adventure of a Zelda game, not the same way around. It's a total shift in strategy (and game design) for Nintendo, at least on the Zelda brand, thanks to an understanding of the potential of open worlds games.

The hype is clouding some minds here (sorry to tell you this when everyone has been touching themselves with 10/10 for a 110 pages now)

Actually, BotW was mostly inspired by the original Legend of Zelda for the NES. Aonuma and team went back to the basics of the original Zelda and added in the modern conventions of the adventure type genre.

But nah, continue with your inane shitposting. Your saltiness is adding flavor to my otherwise drab workday.

As if anyone's hype levels couldn't be intensified any further...that is an amazingly good read!

This really is the game of all time!

Holy crap, agreed. What an amazing read. I've never heard so many critics speak so reverently and passionately about a game. This is one of the best examples.

Whew.

I've been enjoying reading the reviews, but why isn't anyone mentioning the music in the game? After the stellar music in the trailers, I'm very curious to know if the game matches that quality.

Metacritic really doesn't mean shit when it has GTA IV and Twilight Princess hovering right around the same area.

Not into the GTA games but 90% of the time I see GTA IV mentioned it seems it's about how overrated the game was. Is GTA IV the most overrated game of all time and something that has led to reviewers being tougher on games?

I really enjoyed Skyward Sword and appreciate both it's ambition in terms of combat and the cleverness of many of its ideas. And 90% of the time I enjoyed the swordplay. However, I cannot consider it top-tier Zelda. For me:

Top Tier (one of those rare masterful gaming experiences (at least at the time)):
---------------
LttP
OoT
MM

Middle Tier (still great, many fond memories):
----------------
WW
TP
SS
LA

Bottom Tier (pretty enjoyable):
-----------------
PH

I haven't played the rest.

Wow, great scores! This will probably drop to a 97 or lower, but that is still VERY impressive. Though, console Zelda games have always scored incredibly regardless of how good they actually were. Though in today's landscape critics are a bit tougher on games than they were last gen, so it makes this even more impressive. I can't wait to try this out tomorrow.

Really!

Not since Ocarina Of Time, as a matter of fact!

:)

What I find interesting is that many reviewers seem to be searching for the words to describe something that can't be described in that way. Lots of references to that.

That's the part that gets me the most excited.

Currently the #1 ranked game of all time on Opencritic. More reviews still to come, but its currently at 98 with 2nd place being at 96.

I think GTA IV woke up people to the way things were going. The hyperbole for it was beyond insane.

I think what they're reaching for is "Truly feeling a sense of adventure".

Man, I can't wait to play this.

I live in Korea though (the Wii U was never released here, haven't heard anything about the Switch yet), so I'm having my Switch/copy of the game mailed to my parents house (not really keen on custom fees), then having them ship it here. Thinking about letting my brother play through it first, so it'll probably be a good month or two before I'm able to actually play it.

Well, I'm very happy to see so much positive about this. I'll be enjoying it on my WiiU in about 4 months when 1 or 2 people finally send it back to Gamefly :p

I can't see anyone hating on this game. Zelda puzzles are exploration have always been the strongest. Mechanics and combat looks fun. It's like playing in a magical adventure land who the fuck doesn't want that

I wonder if this will break the chain of what seems to be dozens of new Witcher 3 threads each week, at least for a little while.

I'm a dungeon guy so that's going to be a major downer for me. I don't expect to hate it though.

Just finished. My God this had me more hyped than anything. Just a few more hours, I cannot wait!!!

Someone should make a podcast of BoTW player stories.

God damn, people act like games are supposed to be forever time capsules. They were ground breaking games for their time. Just because it doesn't hold to today's standards doesn't mean they are fundamentally bad games.
