The Nintendo 3DS has reached GODLIKE status.

yeah..a lot of japanese games..some games with have better port on anyther systems and nintendo games

of course this kind of gross misuse of the word port only happens in Nintendo threads but yeah

Its the system i regret purchasing the most. The hardware is so bad that it kills any joy found on the fantastic games themselves. I hope one day nintendo makes a 3DS adapter for the wii u, and i can play it on hardware not designed and made in a mongolian cave. Its truly the worst designed video game hardware ive ever owned in my life, just everything about it is bad, and i've been gaming since pong.

To me, all of Nintendo's handhelds are pretty much equal, including 3DS which is saying a lot.

For me personally, I'd probably put the OG Gameboy slightly behind the rest though (as crazy as that sounds). GBC was really when I got into Nintendo's handhelds. 3DS is simply carrying on a very proud tradition of greatness.

I feel like the 3DS had one fantastic year, one meh year and two pretty good years. Honestly, it's not close to the DS. Next year looks decent, but nothing special. Hell, there's a small chance the Vita will have the better lineup next year.

Mmmm I have way more higher quality games on PS4 and it's not godlike yet.

Opinions and everything, and I do realize that there are great games coming up for the PS4, and I myself love everything about it, I even learned to love the OS, but considering just the library released on both I'm gonna go ahead and doubt that.

it really annoys me that nintendo has left the 3ds out to dry but putting all their focus on the wii u when so many more people have a 3ds and want quality games

Ranking the handhelds, I'd go:

1. 3DS- 9/10
2. DS- 7.5/10
3. GBA- 7.5/10
4. PSP- 7.5/10
5. GB- 7/10
6. Vita- 6/10
7. Game Gear- 5/10

A Link Between Worlds, Pokemon X/Y, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Super Mario 3D Land, Virtue's Last Reward and Pushmo all qualify as some of the best handheld games ever made imo. A Link Between Worlds possible as one of the best games ever made period.

Still not as good as the DS.

That system had TWEWY and Ghost Trick. Untill those type of games appear, it won't even come close.

It's my most played platform nowadays and I own three of them, XL, LL and n3DS.

It can play all DS games in addition to its own so it can get the OP's accolade imo.

DS would be be goat if the DSi didn't lose its GBA port.

Your DS rating is positively laughable. I mean you're entitled to your opinion of course, but putting the 3DS ahead of the DS? Crazy. And Pokemon X/Y? One of the best handheld games? It's actually one of the weaker Pokemon games in recent years!
It's funny because the 3DS being backwards compatible instantly puts the 3DS as the best handheld system yet.
Being backwards compatible is nice but is somewhat negated by Nintendo's backwards and archaic decision to make the 3DS region locked. The open DS remains GOAT even if only for that reason.

3DS, DS and GBA are all incredible systems that were/are my favorite of their generations. Nintendo handhelds are the pinnacle of gaming IMO.

Not sure if I would rate it better than DS or GBA, but it's at least equal to them at this point.

Why is it crazy? There are many people who consider the 3DS better than the DS, as can be seen from this thread alone.

Also, I see many hating on Pokemon X/Y simply for being easy (like every pokemon game) and having a bad story (like every pokemon game), without looking at the multitude of great things they have introduced such as a great online, wonder-trading/o-powers, mega evolution, bringing the games to 3D, easier breeding mechanics, great battle animations, etc. The amount of post-game is also comparable to that of any other Pokemon game that has not had it's Platinum/B2W2 edition yet. IMO, they are the best Pokemon games ever made by far!

Yeah, Pokemon games are easy, but XY was even easier. Pokemon stories are pretty bad, but XY was even worse. Lots of Pokemon games have a bad postgame, but XY was as bare bones as possible. Not to mention the horrid performance of the game, absolutely unacceptable they couldn't get 3D working in the overworld when it looks as bad as it does graphically, and the 3D makes battles run at 10 fps.

Although I feel like the DS library is going to be impossible for the 3DS to surpass as this point, I do feel like 3DS releases feel more... important? I'm not sure. I'm a lot more engaged with the system's library than the DS, which was a system I put down once I finished a game. With the 3DS, I play it every day. Granted, a lot of that play is Game Boy puzzle games like Tetris and Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, but there's also New Leaf - a game which I think is a lot better suited to extended, months-long play than Wild World was - and online Smash Bros..

There's generally a lot of 3DS games that can consume a LOT of your time. Animal Crossing, Smash Bros., 2 Pokemon games, Fantasy Life, all the classic RPGs like SMT IV, Persona Q and Bravely Default... so on and so on. I think it's a lot better at worming its way into your personal time; mostly because its strengths, at this point, so mirror the smartphone way of gaming. Long, high-investment play sessions vs 5 minute timewasters.

It's my favorite handhled system ever and the best part is that its life cycle is not over yet. I'm glad many people in here share the same feelings.

Nice OP, though I see he/she is banned now. Nevermind. It's threads like these that make me immediately start looking for bargains on the 3DS. I'd love to get one, just for a small handful of games (Luigi's Mansion, Mario Golf and Fire Emblem), but that is $400-odd bucks worth. However I can get a lot of console (Xbone + 5 games + extra controller for $499, for example), or a lot of GPU for that same moolah, and I turn off the idea almost as fast (or half a new cricket bat or half a coffee grinder etc., lol)

I maintain that the 3DS is still atleast $50 too much here in Australia.

$400?

A New 3DS costs $200, those three games would make it ~$350, there's your $50 cheaper.

Aussie bucks, unfortunately. New 3DSXL is $248 give or take (sometimes $228 on sale), and each game is $47-$69. Oh and I guess I'd need to buy a fucking charger, too. $450 in the cart at EBgames right now.

:(

That's shitty. Don't suppose importing from the UK would be cheaper? Though I guess you'd have to wait for the New 3DS to come out.

EB Games? Oh god.

You can get all three games brand new and sealed for $150 from Ebay stores.

I think the New XL is $220 from Target/Big W? I'm not sure, I bought the standard size which was $198 and it's big enough for me, plus faceplates.

Not even close. The only publisher that has outdone themselves substantially might I say is Nintendo.

PSP and DS had far better libraries but I suppose it was expected that 3DS would never reach such a status as handheld output has declined a lot.

There;s only one system that I would deem to have a godlike status and thats the PS2.

By far the 3DS is my favorite system right now. Had so much fun with games like Mario Kart 7, Zelda A Link Between Worlds and New Super Mario Bros II.

I am not sure why, but when it comes to fun in games, then Nintendo is king. Looking forward on picking a WiiU next year!

I think it's crazy to put the 3DS above the DS. On par with it? Fine, I guess you could make that argument on the basis of its first party strength. But better than the DS? I guess I just don't buy it.

I completed disagree and benzychenz already highlighted why. Pokemon games are notoriously easy, but XY is even easier than past installations. And yeah, the story is bad, but it's actually worse than other stories. Bringing the game to 3D might be worth accolades...if the game didn't run like utter tripe. Whoopie. They added megas...while stripping out any meaningful post game content that previous installations had. Great battle animations? Yeah I was really enjoying watching them run at 10-15FPS. Revolutionary.

I understand that it brought a lot of new features and such to the series, I don't think anyone would deny that. The issue is shoddy implementation. So I understand people who thought it was fresh and new, but the best Pokemon game ever? By far? Now THAT is crazy talk.

Just using EB as they're internationally recognised on this US-based forum. I haven't shopped at EB since the launch of PES3, lol.

XL or bust if I was going to do this. No matter where or when I've looked, I've not seen the console and its games at an appropriate price for my tastes. I picked up the WiiU + games for $179 during that slash and burn sale earlier this year, and that has kind of set the standard for what I expect to get for my console money now :D

I'll grab a 3DS one day: too many games I want to have a go at!

My wife bought me a bunch of games for Christmas including:

Alien Isolation
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Shadow of Mordor

She also got me a 7200 external hard drive for the XBone that is making an insane difference in loading times.

Anyway....Then she comes out with one last gift, and it's a 3DS XL New Super Mario Bros 2 Bundle. Couldn't believe it. Been really enjoying it since yesterday and the 3D seems really cool at times, when I can seem to get it just right. The Smash Bros demo has been a lot of fun also.

Anybody have any tips or recommendations? I have every other home console this gen and a Vita, but didn't see myself getting a 3DS, so I know shit about what's available.

Great but not godlike. This year was very barren for 3DS games and it killed the momentum the 3DS had for me since 2012-2013. I hope 2015 will be better but I'm not that hopeful.
My 3DS had 4-5 times more play time last year than this.

On the flipside the Vita really hit it's stride for me this year. 2013DS, 20V1T4

Well every game listed in the OP is quality. That said I would start with A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D Land and Fire Emblem: Awakening. Those are the best of the best.

That's exactly where I think I'm going to start. I also definitely want to check out the 3DS Ocarina of Time, which I had completely forgotten about until a few minutes ago. I played the original to death, doing every single thing in the game, so I'm hoping the 3DS version is good.

The OP is pretty good for this. I'd put it like this, in terms of genres:

  • Your next 2 3DS purchases should Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Pushmo. One of the best of both the console and possibly the franchise's offerings, and the other is a cheap, wonderful, challenging puzzler that I'm sure you'll fall in love with.
  • Racing: Mario Kart 7
  • Strategy: Fire Emblem Awakening OR Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
  • Platforming: Super Mario 3D Land
  • RPG: Shin Megami Tensei IV OR Fantasy Life OR Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire
  • Action: Kid Icarus Uprising
  • Fighting: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
  • Other: Animal Crossing New Leaf

Plus there's a billion Game Boy and NES games. Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, Link's Awakening, the Mario/Wario Land series, Kirby's Dream Land, Mario Golf, Metroid II, and on and on.

I disagree with the OP because I'm pretty sure my 3DS is not imaginary. However, I think I liked the original DS more because that's what I used to play Phoenix Wright games originally.

Thanks for this. The genre breakdown is very helpful.

Is SteamWorld Dig now overrated or not? Seems like some people didnt like it at all. Anyone here played EscapeVektor?

SWD isn't bad, however it wasn't what most people expected. It was said to be a Metroid-Vania game, it wasn't in terms of exploration, a lot of the game was straight forward. The game was also extremely short. But for what it was, it was great.
