The Official Gran Turismo 4 Thread (Now with sexier graphics)

My experience with Gran Turismo was pretty much limited to GT1, which I played through and loved. Only played a little bit of GT2 and completely passed up GT3, so GT4 has pretty much been a fresh start for me.

I got the game on Wednesday, and got my Logitech Driving Force Pro from Amazon this morning. I must say, after about a 30-minute or so learning curve with the new wheel, this is one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a while. Getting the first 4 licenses was surprisingly fun, and I've spent an entire day with just one car ('05 Mustang GT), finding and learning all sorts of ways just to tune it, let alone race it.

It's nice to see a selection (although limited) of some classic american cars I love like the Chevelle and the Camaro's, though the lack of a 2nd gen Camaro is a bit disappointing. I know most of my time will be spent in the american dealerships/races, and it's something I hope they'll add more to in future GT's.

So far, this is a damn good game. 2005 is off to a nice start with games like RE4 and GT4.

Might I make a suggestion. You said you spent lots of time tuning the Mustang (exactly what I did with the Supra in GT3). Try going to the drag strip in Vegas to see how quick you can do the 400 meters. Just tune it specifically for the 400 meters on the second slot of the settings section, that way you don't mess up the settings you have for track racing. Once you get into it, it becomes addictive because the slightest of adjustments can change your time.

Man I just got the game last night and running in 1080i is awesome. I got my HDTV a few months ago and I have been waiting for this game to come out since I knew it was high def. Anyways its nice.

I got my B license last night. Bought a used 91 Skyline R32 i believe. I just wish they had more American cars but oh well.

so, i have a question...

i really have almost no time to play games lately, and money isnt exactly pouring out of my pocket at the moment... yet i'm still waging an internal struggle on whether or not i sould pick up gt4 and the force pro wheel.

getting gt4 without a wheel is out of the question. the duel shock is friggen awefull for racing games (IMO).

i guess my real question is, am i likely to be able to find a cheaper used gt4 any time soon, and is the pro wheel with 900 degrees really that much better then the old ff wheel?

EDIT: also, is it likely that the pro wheel could be used for ps3. i know, its pure speculation, but dont ps1 accessories work with ps2? sorry if this is a completely ignorant question, but if i'm gonna be spending that much for a wheel, i better get plenty of use from it

what he said...

?

Significantly better than the original wheel. All you'll need is one lap around a track to notice how much better it feels.

As long as its BC you'll be able to.

My cash cow of choice is a white '00 Skyline GT-R V-Spec II. I used it to win a 350Z Concept LM Edition in the first Japanese series, then used that to win the Z Challenge and sold it for over 300K bones so that I could tune up my Skyline some more. Once I have some cash I'm going to turn to the classics. I want to get an E-Type, a '49 Beetle and the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen... among many many others of course. :D

Man this game ownz...so found a good money making sceam. if you get a decent rally racing car nothing to good and race "Costa di Amalfi" on easy. You will unlock the "TOYOTA RSC Rally Raid Car '02" this car is worth around 250k. So two races and blamo 250k, do those races for a half hour BOOM 1 million easy. Beats the old b-spec racing the Japanese Championship for the Nissan Z Fairlady.

if you really dont have time to play games I would say hold off and buy it later when you do have time. IMO its hard to really get any satisfaction out of this game unless you play it for hours at a time.

the wheel is great though. i never used the old wheel so I cant say how much better it is but I cant imagine the other one being as solid and responsive as the DFP. I paid retail for mine but I know there are places where you can get them a lot cheaper online and I found out a couple days after i got GT4 that Sam's had the DFP for like 100 bucks.

if the PS3 doesnt have USB ports then the DFP wont work with it. if it does have USB ports I would think it would.

Heh, wait till you get to ia-13, ia-15, and try to keep your composure at 235+ mph on a very rough straight with ia-16 (especially if you have the DFP) =P

Jesus... IA-15. I'm doing that one right now. 9 1/2 minutes of total concentration. Half a dozen times I've gotten 3-4 minutes in, then either hit the pace car or passed it (which is an automatic fail). I didn't expect such a long license test.

I can tell you this, the Rally tracks are insanely awesome with the Driving Force Pro. I think there's only 7 or 8 dirt/snow tracks, but even still, these are worth the price of admission alone. They are just sooo much fun to race on with the wheel. Just plain fucking awesome. I love it. I wish Polyphony would make a full on rally game...Sony should give 'em the WRC license - I would shit my pants.

i broke down and bought it and the wheel at frys for 169. i was mostly convinced, so i made the trec out there fater class. the set up they had on a wide screen tv in 1080 with the racing seat gave me a hard on. that seat is pretty damn cool, but not owrth 299. i'll build my own :D

and i'm fucking loving it so far. the hweel realy is terrific, by far the best console wheel even without the force feedback. for the first time ever, playing a racer at home with a wheel is taking no time to get used to. it just feels perfectly natural.

I, personally, am not going to get a wheel. I'm actually very happy with the touch-sensitive D-pad and buttons - I've gotten my IA license now with it. This combo has never let me down..

speaking personally, gt sucks without a wheel. i blame sony's duel shock pad. it sucks for racing games. i had gt3 and never could get into it, but this is a whole new story.

If you watch the demo for the very last license test in GT3, Cote d'Azur in the Toyota GT-ONE, and watch the input info, the driver is using a D-pad and buttons, and it was his run that they based the gold time around.

Yes, it's very natural, moreso than any other wheel I've used in any game - the license tests are actually easier this time around with the Driving force pro. Let me know what you think after you play some of the rally tracks :)

what do you think i played at frys? ;)

through on the grand canyon stage. love the spectators and the feel of the game... dont like the invisible walls (i know, i know, stay on the road :lol)

really great game. glad i spent the money

How much is this wheel? I'm gonna have to look into it.
I wonder if It works well on all three systems with an adapter?

the wheel retails for 150 but you can usually find it cheaper than that online. Its been out for quite some time and Ive yet to hear about any kind of adapter that will allow you to use it with any other system. it is compatible with the PC though.

got my 2nd car in GT mode. used Prelude. I like to run cars stock until I stop winning races but I was hating the way this car drove. I was getting a lot of decel in turns. then I turned both ASM settings down half way and took TCS down a notch and it was perfect. added a Spoon exhaust to gain 10 HP and Im on my way.

I am so happy to see so many people on this forum finally come to their senses and acknowledge the superiority of a steering wheel controller. This is such a delight to see so many have a change of heart and warm up to a wheel instead of a contoller. Hopefully now you will realize how much a gamepad sucks for racing games and I hope using a wheel now will make you so comfortable with it that you no longer desire to use a gamepad. Once it grows on you you'll never go back to a pad :)

Add me to the converts. I just couldn't justify getting too serious with this game without a wheel. And I concur with others, the DS just is not a great driving pad. I understand it works for some but I think I needed a better option to get to a higher level. Now I need to construct some sort of seat/table contraption to use with it.

dude, it's not that people don't realize wheels are superior, it's that we can't afford them

How are you supposed to set up the wheel/pedal combo?

I was thinking about getting the wheel for this game, but when I thought about it I didn't see any ideal placement for them without having to drag in another table or something into the living room.

There are little clamps on the wheel to hook to the edge of a table, I used a small portable tray with the pedals on the floor. You can also buy an optional lap attachment.

I use one of those wooden folding trays. works fine for me though I could use a better place to sit.

i gotta say photo mode rocks!

how do you suppose other devs are gonna copy this without it being blatantly obvious they stole it from PD?

then again.......Sega GT had kind of a photo mode

You guys weren't kidding about IA-15...jesus I think I didn't blink for my entire first run there.

Missed bronze by 2 seconds though...so its back to the starting line for me I guess

this brings up a question. since the Xbox's controller ports are actually just USB ports with a different connection; and since there are USB convertors for the Xbox, I am wondering what would happen if you hooked up the DFP to the Xbox with that method? think it would work?

p.s. i just ordered my DFP wheel at Amazon (using the GAF link at the top to help the forum with $ - which everyone should do btw). $104.99 total, no tax, no shipping. I love Amazon because even with the Free shipping, since I live so close to Dallas, I always get my order the next day. Since it's Saturday, I imagine I will get in on Monday. I'm going to a friends tomorrow to watch the Nascar race, and he also bought GT4. Afterwards, we are gonna play for the rest of the day. Just wish I could bring that wheel with me. I know he would trip out over that. Hope it's as good as you say Gek. As I am selling my red Logitech MOMO Force (a classic) on blind faith that this new DFP wheel will be better (it better be, as I love this red momo, and it is not being made anymore and are near impossible to get).

i'm a gt noob... can someone recomend some good fr, rr, etc cars to use? preferrable cheaper (like used). some tuning tips would be appreciated as well.

also, maybe i'm haveing troubles negotiating the menus to find the proper races... but starting out in the game seems alfully slow... with one (weak) car, there really isnt many races i can participate in... is this just the way the game goes, or am i missing something? i dont remember gt1 being this restrictive.

and whats with the "shaky" graphics occasionally? i've noticed when ever you are in a busy scene (complex environments, all cars visible), the screen IQ drops to HORRID quality, like rr5, but worse.

For FR, you can't beat the Mazda RX-7 at only $13 g's.

Yeah, if you notice, when the graphics go all weird, look at the HUD, it shows you exactly what is happening. Literally, the graphic resolution is like cut in half or something. Nasty little bug. Dunno how they coulda missed it considering the time they put in on this and their supposed perfectionism.

yeah, i think i got one for about that. seems pretty decent thus far, and its purdy.

Great game but the actual graphics when you are racing are a letdown to me.

I think the graphics are vastly improved over GT3 at least.

the only thing that bothers me about the graphics is the shimmering. which is pretty bad. the jaggies are present too, but aren't to distracting. there's also some pop-up, especially in the city tracks, but it's nothing too bad. other than that, they are great. the 1080i is not that impressive however, since it's just 480p scaled to 1080i. still, this is really great graphics for PS2. besides, this game is about the driving physics.

I wonder would 480p look better than 1080i. I agree, the 1080i is not that impressive. I agree the game is great, but I did expect more from 1080i.

at work today (home depot), i made some schematics for a racing set up i'm gonna build. should work quite well, and be cheap to boot. only thing i'll be missing is a chair.

anyone got any suggestions? maybe an auto pick and pull (they still might charge a lot for one though)? if i could find a cheapo seat that at least fits somewhat like a real car seat, that would work

like this?

I won a Ginetta G4 '64 .......

and tuned it a bit and then went and won the British Lightweight Series and the 35 lap Circuit de la Sarthe II Battle in the 1000 Miles series. the 35 lap race got me 150k Cr. and it was pretty easy. just raced it in Bspec until the end. it took a while but it was easy money. Im gonna buy a car and knock out the FR Challenge next.
