The Official Gran Turismo 4 Thread (Now with sexier graphics)

The moment you stop being delicate and start to thrash the wheel, you'll enjoy the 900 degrees of motion (and you'll turn better times).

Just got done with a session at Citta de Aria w/ an Amuse S2000 R1 Titan. Everyone needs to try that :D Beautiful handling...

Dang man, he's eatting that track up. I have problems staying on that track lol. I makes you want to go so fast yet I can't handle teh speed.

Holy shit, that was an impressive video! I am convinced, the DFP is the fucking SHIT! WOW! Can't wait for mine to get here now!!! :D

And my MOMO is already past $200 on eBay with 3 days out still, and I got the DFP for only $100. :) :D

My DFP is set up nicely, on a sturdy desk, and the height and everything is great...but I'm still sucking! :(

I can't make it past iB test number...well the 2nd last one where you race in Italy. My time is consistantly a second too long.

As far as DFP settings go...how shall I have it? I have resistance on max, power steering assists off, and that one setting to "Simulation" but I think it said it didn't matter what you set it to for the DFP.

I'll play with ACS and the traction control to see how it handles...I remember one test where it was turned off (TCS that is) and it felt completely natural to me. I'm guessing that's because cars I drive have neither...

Holy crap...that video was jaw dropping!

until I saw the guy in the background playing it with a Dual Shock, with the DFP not even plugged into the PS2...
j/k :P

I used to think that I sucked...now the feeling is even moreso!

Hmm...well I'm pretty sure I'm following the pace car exactly ...but then I was thinking that the pace car doesn't have the same roll issues my car has, so the line shouldn't be the same for me as well.

I wish there was some guide... a la the tire marks in PGR2 to help out. I'll try watching the replay...but I think all the fancy angles will make it hard to see my line, while the game views will show me what I already saw.

That Italian track is insane! Loved it.

Don't know how the hell people are golding some of these tests though :( Right now it seems literally impossible to get silver in most of them to me.

Just ride his ass as hard as possible, and I mean really ride it hard, pound that nissan ass..

But if you hit him, it's an automatic fail...

I drove really conservatively at the 'Ring, and got a 9:31 something the first time I actually managed to finish. It's a bit like the Coffee Breaks, if you finish then you've basically done well enough to pass, but practice counts for a lot...

Next order of business is getting a '49 Beetle and trying to get a lap of the 'Ring under a half-hour, stock. :D

You don't need the wheel to be good.I'm about as good with the wheel when compared to the DS and got all the gold medal (80) +the coffee break with the controller. And absolutly smoked the last gold on the ring with now a time of 6'52.343,again with a DS controller.

It's more a matter of how you can play with the controller instead of you can't beat boys with a wheel ;)

Solstice just posted samplers of the GT4 Kicks soundtrack

Seriously it really kicks ass. Pretty disappointing that alot of the tracks didn't make it into the final game.

OK, so here's the deal.

I *SUCK* at this game.

My only real previous experience with the series was GT2 which I bought on a whim when it was a Greatest Hits and I proceeded to only play it a few times.

I guess I'm pretty much encountering the same issues with GT4 as I did with 2, though. I don't want to shelve a GT game again, and thankfully the pretty graphics have kept me going so far, but I fear that I may once again leave the GT world too soon.

I'm not horrible at racing games, but I'm definitely more used to the arcade-style stuff and its obvious that those cornering techniques aren't necessarily going to work in a game like this. The only car I have right now is an old-school Lancer Evolution with a minor suspension upgrade (haven't been winning very much, so haven't been getting the monies!). I've only been able to gold the entire Sunday Cup and I haven't even been able to place in anything else.

Either way, I'm not too horrible except when it comes to cornering. Should I be using the regular break or the emergency break? Evidently the way GT handles cornering is more realistic, but I'm always tempted to take them hard and sharp. Its going to take awhile to unlearn this arcade style of racing, I think, but does anyone have any particular tips that I could use? The in-game and manual tips seem fit for someone who already knows a lot of the terms and ideas beforehand.

Definetly don't use the EBrake. Thats generally used for drifting since it causes you tail to swing out fast. Brake normally before the corner and then turn into it, don't try to drift corners.

heya Belfast, here's a post from earlier that will help you at least get some money. buy some new cars with this and upgrade them, the game is much easier when you lighten up your car to stage 3, get some soft racing tires and make some other upgrades. stay away from any turbo's above stage 2 though, until you get better. stage 2 turbo's still have good low end power and less turbo lag etc. stay with this game, trust me. you get out of it what you put in.

Man this game ownz...so found a good money making sceam. if you get a decent rally racing car nothing to good and race "Costa di Amalfi" on easy. You will unlock the "TOYOTA RSC Rally Raid Car '02" this car is worth around 250k. So two races and blamo 250k, do those races for a half hour BOOM 1 million easy. Beats the old b-spec racing the Japanese Championship for the Nissan Z Fairlady.

Hmmm...yeah. I guess I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the info!

As for the e-brake, yeah, that's my Initial D side coming in. I realize GT probably isn't supposed to be played that way, but like I said, its hard to unlearn habits like that. ><

We all have gone through this phase. You will have to get used to braking much earlier and harder than usual, and entering most turns much slower than you are accustomed. My tip is to slow down, WAY down, to the point that you feel that you can comfortably take the approaching turn without feeling that you have to slide or drift through it. I would forget about winning races for now -- just make it your goal to take turns with little to no tire squeal. After some time, you can gradually speed things up as you get used to the handling.

Also, go through the license tests and aim for at least silver in all of them (Licenses A and B).

In addition, the A-Spec points rating at the beginning of the race is crucial to determining your chances of winning... anything over, say, 50 points is going to be tough for a beginner.

Hehe, yeah. I figured it was mostly growing pains. I guess I'm just so used to speed in other racers that slowing down feels awkward to me. I'll give your advice consideration (I had done some of the License B tests, though, but I didn't do very well on them), but I do have another question: On sharp turns following long straight-aways, what is the best thing to do to handle those corners? Am I just going to have to brake earlier or something?

Brake early and make sure that the car's not "unsettled" in any way before making the turn.

It's much, much better to go in slow and leave clean and fast than to enter faster than you should and have to correct yourself during the turn.

p.s. the Costa di Amalfi track is in the Special Events I believe (bottom left). 2nd race down.

I was scrolling through here and wasn't sure if I missed it. Can I import cars in Arcade mode or not? Is that only 2 player.

I love this game....I need more cars.

I had over a million dollars and was messing around looking at cars. Thought I'd buy the new Ford GT thingy. Didn't pay attention to the price. After I bought it I looked up and I was dang near broke! :lol

I hate not being able to sell all of the cars I'm winning. What I want to do is finish a series of races twice so that I can keep one car and sell the other. But when I go to sell it, I'm told that it can't be priced and I would have to give it away. I can understand if that's the case for concept cars, but a fucking Mazda 6? Anyway, I wwon that AWD acura concept car with 400 HP and that's all I will need for a long time :D

Does anyone know if there is a performance difference between all the different kinds of Skylines? There are GT's, GT-R's, GT-R m-spec's, GT-R V-spec IInur, GT-R V-spec II.
I really want to grab a Skyline for my 4WD but I'm not sure which one to get. Also is there really a point in buying a new car over a used one other than color?

Thanks in advance.

Quick question...

How do you take the tops down on convertibles? GT4 boasts about its 'human element' but convertibles are still covered =P Also does taking the tops down actually effect the cars' overall handling?

fucking hell. i just bought 3 of the shittiest, POS, dinky little japanese cars trying to enter that one race in the beginner cup, but none of them will work. what the hell car am i supposed to use here?

and i was playing around with my 500 hp scooby at the grand canyon. jesus christ, i never thought i'd have to drastically tone down a cars performance in able to set decent times. i was getting my ass kicked by those stock lancia/celica gt4s :lol

Any 'GT-R' is 4WD. The GT is RWD.

Also. This might be a stupid question. But can you Turbo a N/A tuned engine?? I have always though that you couldn't do both to an engine.
I ask this only because I have a car turboed and when i check to tune it, the HP actually goes down.
I have always thought that tuned means you are moving natural aspirated air into the engine more effectively and turboing an engine is forcing more air into the engine to increase performance.

Go buy a used Suzuki Cappucino '95. Stick a stage 1 Turbo in it and you should be able to win easily. I did the same thing as you, wasting my money in shit cars until I realized the computer was owning me with the Cappucino.

Yeah I know that. I'm asking if the GT-R V-spec is any different then the GT-Rwhatever (other than cosmetically)
Well in real life the R34 GT-R V spec II and GT-R V spec II N1 are 15mm lower than the GT-R. The V spec II and N1 are the same, except the N1 has less creature comforts (air con, stereo, tinting...), so the N1 is a little lighter than the plain V spec II.

I've been winning the Beginner races with a contiually souped-up Pontiac Sunfire. Wonder how long I can use it until I have to switch to a more potentian-laden car...

So you would suggest the N1 then?

Thanks for the help man. You know your Skylines.

if Im thinking right then youre talking about the Lightweight K-Car Cup. I guess I got lucky I had won a small car that I was able to use in that series and win it pretty easily. it was the Autobianchi A112 Abarth '79.

one of the main reasons I hate GT is that you go into a series and take a car that qualifies only to find out theres really only one car you can take to absolutely have a chance to compete for the win.

I just entered the Muscle Car Competition with a stock Chevelle SS 454 '70 and it would have been a pretty nice little race except for the fact that there was a Shelby Cobra 427 '67 at the pole. it ended up winning a two lap race in NY by 21 seconds. now I either have to spend a buttload of cash tuning up this Chevelle or sell out and get a Cobra. wheres the fun in that?

I think you are talking about the Light Weight Cup, which required a car that's shorter than 3400mm(or whatever it is in the US version) to enter.

Yeah, the Suzuki Cappucino as well as a couple of Daihatsu meet the requirement. FYI, I upgraded my car(an Italian antique) to 80ps and have no trouble winning the cup.

You can always exit, re-enter, and hope the Cobra took the day off...
