Yep going to look awesome on my 120" screen.will look gorgeous on a projector, can't wait
on this note i have question. if there was no standard tv resolution, what would be the optimum aspect ratio for gaming?
Jesus Christ. Games ARE NOT Movies. First it was cinematic cut scenes, then cinematic storytelling, now cinematic resolutions?
If the game is indeed 60FPS then it's an OK comprimise.thats one way to get 1080p 60fps, you could probably get 120fps if it was just a black screen and audio. It would be like the radio...
uh boy.Quantic Dream uses black bars as well to improve performance.
And here The Dark Sorcerer (1080p):
In the universe we live in. In which the artist is free to choose whatever they want to help tell their story, compose their image, share their work.In what universe?
uh boy.
Doesn't bode well for what we're going to see 5 years from now if we're already pulling out the black bars in year one.

What, if all TV manufacturers just threw out TVs with random-ass shapes all the time?
I don't think there's an "optimum" aspect ratio, but since 99% of modern TVs are 16:9, and the user's ability to control the camera robs the devs of any ability to create interesting compositions with whatever frames they are given, surely the ideal solution would be to just ensure the full screen real estate is used up, no?
It's a game that looks pretty damn great though, if they really will have exact same looking gameplay like that trailer was.If this is a measure in order to improve performance than this would be indeed worrisome - especially if you take into consideration that this game is on the console with the superior gpu...
This worries me for multiplats...
Would you prefer to go back to 4:3 ratios for games?
uh boy.

I'm definitely a proponent of this, as it looks far better than stretching from lower resolution. This way on a 1080p TV you get 1:1 mapping, which is far easier to accept for my brain than stretching. I didn't even realize Sorcerer was doing this at first until someone pointed out, and I watched it a few times.
I'd prefer if games didn't try to be like Hollywood blockbusters instead of video games. It seems that the video game industry is desperately trying to become like the movie industry.
That doesn't mean ">", and I completely agree they have that choice. But it doesn't trump my choice in terms of playing this game or not.In the universe we live in. In which the artist is free to choose whatever they want to help tell their story, compose their image, share their work.
It's not the resolution itself, it's the framing.
It'd be very surprising if the game didn't include such an option. With probably chopping off a part of the image on both sides.Why not make it option for the black bars or to stretch the game a little bit?

It was me who said that and the creator's vision is always ALWAYS more important that someone's inability to get over how the art is viewed.They can make their choice and so can consumers. Consumers choice will "win" out, unless there is something else you meant by ">".

RE4 was letterboxed? Pics?Wasn't RE4 intentionally letterboxed?
But what apect ratio would you personally prefer? And why?
Do you really think that the enjoment and addictiveness of games is related to the aspect ratio they are presented in?I got the terminology wrong, but the point still stands. This industry keeps trying to force itself to become movies. Instead of focusing on what makes games fun and addictive (gameplay) it seems too many developers are trying to become the next Michael Bay.
Do you know why we have 16:9 in most TVs today instead of 4:3?16:9, the aspect ratio used in 99.99999% of TVs on the market. My point isn't necessarily the aspect ratio, it's with this industry's desire to become Hollywood instead of being what it is. Way too many games (no 1886 specifically since I haven't played it) trying to become cinematic experiences.

that's a good point. i didn't either.
I actually don't, why?Do you know why we have 16:9 in most TVs today instead of 4:3?
Never implied that it did. What I'm saying is that the creators' intent is great than anyone's complaint about it not filling their screen. You don't have to like it or buy it but its 100% true.That doesn't mean ">", and I completely agree they have that choice. But it doesn't trump my choice in terms of playing this game or not.

I just read up on it, and it's an extremely boring mathematical decision.A 4:3 55" screen would look goofy?
I believe their other four PS4 games are 1080p.Would it be really that hard to see a 1920x1080 game from Sony for a change? This is getting embarrasing.
Yes, it was forced 16:9 on a 4:3 TV, so it was effectively rendering something like 640x360, instead of 640x480RE4 was letterboxed? Pics?

Quick illustration on the possible difference to the FOV. As others have said I have chosen to play like this when expanded FOV was more important than detail in distance.

You mean, besides the four and only other PS4 games they showed?

This is not a hardware power issue. Final dev kits aren't even out yet and resolution changes don't happen to well into development. If this decision has been made now, it's purely an artistic choice.If the game is indeed 60FPS then it's an OK comprimise.
But honestly they should have rendered this game at 1280x1080p if they wanted 60FPS as opposed to 1920x800!
FYI:
1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels
1920x800 = 1,536,000 pixels
