The Spoony Experiment

Good lord this dude still exists? Any people still watch him?

It's not like watching his newest releases is hugely time-consuming nowadays.

But yeah, alongside with the AVGN he's pretty much the only online reviewer type I've followed regularly over the years. Still do, even though his current state of affairs saddens me.

Especially compared to how much better the AVGN has things covered nowadays. (but of course the Cinemassacre crew is also larger than one person. Mike is a big help on this front.)

He tweeted that up, after saying this was just some dumb fun.

I really would love some new Counter Monkeys

Next few weeks, huh? 4 weeks later, nothing.

We are getting to September and the last real video was from May. Has the content drought ever been this bad for Spoony? We are approaching World of Warcraft levels.

Patreon was at ~1800 few months ago and now it's fast approaching 1500 even before the end of month drop.

Maybe people are finally realizing?

Kinda crazy that he went from making 5k a month at the start down to 1500.

My God. What a dream job. You're own boss. Play video games, make videos, and you only answer to your community and you make a damn decent earning. Shit, you could have easily had a second job as well.
And 5k was just the start. He could have gone up way higher. I probably would have supported as well if this was old spoony.

Ohh well.

This guy gets payed for doing basically nothing? What a joke.

True, but his numbers have dropped so badly in the last few years that now he's making a single paycheck's amount of cash over a month's time.

But it is absolutely fascinating that people have still continued to donate up to now.

Been that way for a while now. But this year has just gotten even worse. Really disrespectful towards the people who are giving him their hard earned money.

I didn't even know he was still around. Used to really enjoy his stuff back when he was on TGWTG.

That's the thing, when he actually puts out something it is entertaining enough, sometimes even hilarious. The guy still got it, in my opinion. I wouldn't mind these hiatuses if his Patreon wasn't a thing, but it's just getting borderline scammy at this point. His Patreon is making more money than some of my friends are making at their current shitty jobs.

I always get sad when I see this bumped and think maybe this will be actual content. I'd still like to see those reviews of the other XIII games. I'd even take another Black Hole since those could be fairly entertaining.

I think reviewing XV upon release would give him some kind of boost.

I dunno man... is his heart really into it anymore? Does he want to do this anymore?

I don't really feel bad that he's lost so many... patrons(?) because he really hasn't given them jack for the longest time, but I really hope he gets a spark again and gets back to making videos. I still think his highlander reviews are some of his best and I'll seek them out to watch every now and then, but I don't have his site bookmarked and check it everyday like I used to do.

I used to look forward to new Spoony stuff, I even paid for the utterly broken Android app.
But when he seemed to abandon his old style review stuff for films and games and the only content seemed to be occasional wrestling crap I pretty much gave up.
I might re-watch some old stuff, the Ultima vids in particular and some of his B-movie reviews, but I've long since accepted that good Spoony content is never coming again.

It seems he never recovered from whatever the hell happened a few years ago that saw him essentially banished from TGWTG (still not entirely sure what happened there...). Even though he seems to have been accepted back for some crossover stuff, it's barely more than nothing.

he never "reviews" final fantasy game when they came out,but way later,so don't count on that

for what i know,he is having halth issues with his sleep, and he has been for a while,so that's probably why he stopped putting out content

of course, since he is under patreon now, that doesn't excuse him from not actually making content

I've been following Spoony for years and have been hearing this many times, but do we actually know if it's true and not just an excuse so he can get out of making videos?

Rewind to when he was actually making videos and I wouldn't have had any problems believing this, but after taking people's money while doing absolutely jack shit I really have to wonder. Especially since it didn't sound like he was sick or anything on the live streams he did for a while.

If it was just attention seeking or lazy he'd probably have ramped up production even if the reviews were awful when his patreon money started dropping rapidly. His mental health problems seem very real and even at 5k a month I doubt he was making enough to fund the extensive testing he's done.

don't know if it's true, just aid what i knew from some twitter of him..and also him having problems way before actually only adds credibility to the whole thing since those are not the kind of problem that just appear suddenly one day.

and the whole "sound sick" doesn't really make sense..it's not like you sound different when you are sleep deprived..but that can in fact hinder your work, especially when you are a "creative"..he might put himself in front o f a camera, but if he can't write anything funny or creative,it wouldn't amount to much..he used to make content about him just talking about wrestling or games and people hated that and asked for proper reviews

but as i said, that doesn't justify him getting paid to do nothing..so people are totally right about getting their money away from his patreon account...it's up to him to try to put his shit together, either by solve his problems or just stop being lazy,so that he can try to get some fans back

Out of interest, did something happen with him in June? Looking at the graphs, his number of Youtube subscribers suddenly jumped by about ~1.5K, but then fell by 3K a couple of weeks later.

Looks like he streamed a fair bit back in June playing Persona 4 Golden, but then stopped near the end of the month. I guess that could be it?

I think a lot of people are supporting him because it's become a habit, and that they wish he'll get back on his feet eventually. For now he seems to be content bitching about Donald Trump on Twitter for his main job. Thing about Patreon is that there's no obligation to do anything, I assume, if you haven't set any goals. You can just do nothing and people will make the call themselves if they want to support you or not.

I would be willing to believe he has trouble with his health, I mean, it's not the first time he has talked about it. But I don't buy that it cripples his ability to do _any_ kind of video for the fans. A movie review VLog or something, like he used to do. Hoping for a new written review is pretty much pointless now.

It's such a shame. A lot of his site is just broken links now, with blip.tv gone and he hasn't bothered to fix those and replace them with youtube uploads. So lot of his older, great stuff is just gone.

Maybe he should've hired someone to manage the site, upload videos etc. a long time ago. Kinda like the AVGN has quite a few people working behind the scenes at Cinemassacre (although we've always seen Mike, but now Ryan as well).

How does he still have over $1400 on Patreon when he hasn't had an actual review in 4.5 months? Has anything come from his tweets saying he was doing reviews?

He made some pretty messed-up comments about a fellow contributor to Channel Awesome, cant remember who exactly. In essence he said he wanted to chain her up in his basement and 'love' her "[his] way". Then when he was prompted to apologise, he had a big meltdown and flipped tables over on Twitter, in essence decrying an apology as unnecessary; in the worst way possible. I think he deserved much worse after the comment and the flat-out refusal to genuinely apologise.

I feel pretty much the same way.

For a while there he was doing impromptu movie reviews with his brother and I even enjoyed a lot of those, but yeah.

It's so weird how much great content he used to put out. The Ultima videos are ridiculously entertaining, I've rewatched them several times, the whole series. And his old 80s movies reviews tended to be pretty fun and of course the in depth Final Fantasy ones.

But I just don't care at all about wrestling or Counter Monkey.

Man I miss old Spoony :( dude is SO talented, he could be making disgusting amounts of money if he tried. Was sad to see his mental/physical health decline. Still impressed he's getting patreon bucks for doing nothing haha, unless there's some patron exclusive stuff I dunno.

I tried to watch his live streams but they were just so lifeless and his inability to take any kind of criticism got so bad at times. His strength is easily in the scripted videos. I think they're dead and gone though.

Pretty recently he tweeted that he had taken a break from social media to relax (considering his meltdowns on Twitter, that's not a bad idea) but so far it hasn't helped him produce any new content.

His Patreon is more like social welfare at this point.

Hope he bounces back.

He is easily funnier and more creative than his friends Doug and Angry Joe. I bet he even does a better EA Cobra Commander impression.

Damn, I didn't realise it was that bad.
I seem to recall some mention of him shitting on some of his fanbase but I didn't realise it got quite that dark. By the time I learned what was going on most mentions to it seemed to be getting burned away to try and save face for everyone involved.

I believe it was Jacob Chapman, Hope Chapman at the time, who now works over at anime news network.

I remember following that big mess a few years ago, even though I didn't watch any of the Channel Awesome stuff. I don't know why I have this occasional morbid fascination with all of this, but that whole community seemed like such a big mess.

I remember that, that was the moment I stopped watching his stuff.

Wow, I had no idea about Jacob/Hope being transgender. The more you know. I always liked her (at the time) videos.

Never even thought Jesuotaku would come out as trans.

I feel like one of Spoony's biggest issues is that he does everything himself. Someone like AVGN has a lot of help behind the scenes, obviously Mike, but also Ryan and others at Cinemassacre. It's really sad that there's so many dead links on Spoony's website and some content lost forever, because he didn't back it up or if he did, never re-uploaded it.

At some points he has said he could use an editor or website organizer but never followed up, don't know why - it may be that he doesn't trust anyone to give access to his files or work, or that he doesn't have any friends that he could ask help from, again, a bit sad.

Of course this was all valid when he actually produced content.

Man.... Spoony's Final Fantasy VIII review was a real highlight. I remember busting my ass laughing at the Mentos the fresh maker scene with Zell.

It's also amazing just how far his patreon dropped.

That'll happen when it becomes evident that you won't be making worthwhile content. His live wire stuff isn't even close to the quality of ripper or phantasmagoria 2

Awhile back he did get pretty high, 4 or 5k was where it was at. Was mainly a lot of people thinking he would keep doing videos after blip went down and he moved to YouTube.

Man, as someone trying to get into YouTube myself, I'd love to be where Spoony was, making $4k a month, your dream job, your own boss. It's a shame what happened. It seems like it was a slow gradual breakdown. I still remember his June 2012 breakdown. How scary that was....
