The Underrated: Games that deserve more love from GAF

I thought Wipeout HD was generally loved on GAF?

I think I single handedly make it the most loved game on GAF.

I didn't mention it even though it deserves all the love in the world, it received a lot of attention 'round here for a PSN game.

Yeah, the 2008 one.

I mean, it's beautiful (the tech is impressive and design is on par, many locations are breathtaking), has original gameplay that is very rewarding when you learn the flow, simple but good story with great ending... But it wasn't hardcore enough for some gamers. Their loss. Enjoyed every second of it.

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars

It's my and many others' favourite game on PS3 and it released over 2 years ago. It's a unique concept of football with flying cars and it's as ridiculous as it sounds. It has 4 player split-screen against bots and split-screen online, with up to 4v4 matches. It features almost all of the PS3's optional extras: in-game custom music, trophies (before they were standard) and was even one of the first games on PS3 with a fully-fledged theatre mode, complete with YouTube uploading directly from the game. It only costs £8 and has an in-depth demo on both the EU and US stores.

The replay mode is incredibly robust and allows you to make videos like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDj2A9XMBJA

Some harsh reviews and an almost broken online mode when it came out meant it never achieved nothing more than cult status, but patches have made the online very smooth and it has a very dedicated following. Add to that free DLC and supportive, voal devs and it's still going strong two years later.

Shame Gaf seems to never acknowledge it :(

Most loved game on GAF seems to be Uncharted 2.
I don't like the Uncharted games

This is probably the most memorable Wii game I've played. If you like platformers, as well as old school click and point adventures, then Zack & Wiki may interest you.

Platformers? Really? I don't see it.

As someone who just recently played through it, I have to disagree on The Darkness, OP. I can almost guarantee you that game is not actually as good as you remember it.

Trauma Team.
I think a lot of people who'd played the Trauma Center games thought "eh, been there done that" and didn't buy it, which is a shame. A lot more variety in gameplay, some great presentation and the Forensics & Diagnosis sections are easily as good as any of the Phoenix Wright games (although you should probably avoid the Endoscopy sections - ew those controls). Pick it up, its cheap at the moment and it's one of those games that will develop a cult following in the future.

yeah how is Zack & Wiki a platformer!?

I liked Zack & Wiki a lot though. I mean, let me revise that, it had some frequent motion control problems, as Wii games tend to have, but it was a step in the right direction in terms of games designed for the ground up with the wii remote in mind. It's the right type of game, not shallow at all.

And when I played it, I kept thinking "my god, this is how Zelda puzzles need to be for the first ground up Wii Zelda title. I really see the potential in this."

Zack & Wiki is primarily why I'm so excited for Skyward Sword. Surely, with wiimote + Motion+ the amount of puzzle opportunities has to be massively increased and enhanced, and I can't wait to get my mind around some of it. I hope Nintendo doesn't pull any punches.

I'm... abstaining from saying anything about PoP 2008. Amir0x pretty much already covered it.
One thing I will say for it: it's better than Enslaved!

I didn't think Ghost Trick was too hot I hope the lack of attention was because most of GAF agreed with me ;)

Anyway, the generation is just moving on is all. I know Radiant Historia is my final DS game. it's an amazing way to end the system.

Well I disagree in that I enjoyed Ghost Trick a lot, but I certainly think Radiant Historia is more worthy of the recommendation. Ghost Trick is more the kind of thing I'd recommend to people I know with very specific tastes whereas I think everyone should be playing this RH.

And I know what you mean, but just look at the Tactics Ogre thread! Great game as well, but sad that the new IP has about 1/5th as many posts.

Good choice.

It is but it stills falls short of the love that it should of received in terms of sales, if they had waited and released Wipeout (+) Fury HD @ retail internationally with an advertising push I think it would of received a lot more love and would of made a crap ton more money being that they could of charged full RRP easy.

Seriously, it wasn't that "autotarded" game, you still need timing in your movements and actions, it was a somewhat different aproach to your normal plataforming game, and hell...the only reason it was so fuckng easy it was because you couldn't die, I would have died a lot in the game if it wasn't for that stupid feature, also it's one of the more beautiful games this gen.

(Combat sucked, like in most PoP games but at least the number of enemy encounters were pretty low)

Tactics Ogre is my all time favorite handheld game now. If it wasn't for Final Fantasy Type-0, it'd be my last PSP game too.

I'm ready to move on really. The handhelds have dried up their efficiency and are showing their age bad imo

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light deserves more love from everyone. That traversty LIMBO got the GAF art whore award and Lara Croft decimates it in terms of the quality of gameplay and the value the game offers.

Edit: Damn, couldn't even get in before the Nier cult. what an awful game to worship smh
You didn't like LIMBO? I can see me and you having a great friendship and agreeing a lot in the future if you don't like it lol. The amount of praise the game gets is ridiculous and not worth it at all personally.

I'd have to agree with Lara Croft as well, that game is just plain fun and speed running through levels with co-op is intense.

I can't wait for The Darkness 2!!! Even though it's not the same developers, I'm trying to stay as optimistic as possible.

Wolfenstein, Singularity, and Blur. The first three that popped into my mind are all games that Activision unfairly sent to die.

Folklore: though a flawed game, i thought the atmosphere was incredible.

I liked Zak and Wiki, but fuck, the last few levels were just retarded.

Whether or not Persona 2 PSP comes out in NA will determine whether or not Tactics Ogre is my last PSP game. I haven't had a lot of time to sit down with it yet, but what I've played so far is amazing. It definitely deserves the love; I just wish Radiant Historia's release had better timing. Maybe everyone will migrate over, though. Who knows.

To stay more on topic: I agree that Alan Wake suffered from its studio's reputation and the expectations of a lot of people going in. It wasn't what most people wanted it to be but for what it actually was, it was pretty solid.

Anno 1404 / Dawn of Discovery is imo the best Wii game.
Well, small exaggeration there, but I loved it. Bought it just because I didn't want to deal with the DRM on Steam, but I ended up putting over 30 hours into it. Controls and UI are great, and I absolutely loved the look of the game.

Metal Gear Solid 4. although it's not perfect, it's still an awesome game that don't deserve the hate it received on gaf

i reject its inclusion. GAF voted it Game of the Year in their awards thread.

it's got a ton of backlash now but I think any game that gets voted GOTY cannot be underrated.

Boy, MGS4 sure is terrible though

It won GOTY.

Yes, it also receives a lot of hate, but the only way it could get more love is if the people who don't like it were forced to simply not share their opinions. GOTY is pretty much the pinnacle of GAF love.

fake edit: beaten by Amir0x, not really sure why I bothered typing this out.

This! Takes a bit of time to really get the controls and it requires a lot of finesse but it's incredibly rewarding when you start playing well.

Also, as someone else said, Folklore was incredible.

Yeah, you would die and you would respawn a few seconds earlier than when saved by Elika. The thing missing is "Game Over" screen to tell you that you fucked up. And because of that, it's actually less frustrating experience.

I enjoyed the combat too ;P

I guess the only flaw I have with PoP 2008 is how the narrative is presented, the non-linear approach destroyed the development of relation between the main characters. I think I'd actually prefer standard "chapters" here, with a little more story.

I want a sequel :(

Since I'm new to GAF, how is Alpha Protocol received? I thought it was a bit corny but somehow I loved it. I would recommend it to anyone without a moments notice

I love Alpha Protocol and think it gets a bum rap. It was probably in my top 3 games of 2010. Some people had problems with bugs or whatever but I didn't have any issues when I was playing it.

My favorite moment was late in the game, I kicked down a door and there were five guys that immediately opened fire on me. I ducked behind a wall, activated stealth mode, and came back out. I came up and stealth killed the first guy, and the other four immediately opened fire every which way trying to find me. One by one, I come up behind each of the other guys and slit their throats as they fire wildly. My stealth runs out as I kill the fourth guy. The fifth guy turns to me...and he runs out of ammo. As he frantically tries to reload his gun, I calmly pull my pistol out and head shot him. It was freaking awesome, almost like a direct scene from an action movie.

Any game that makes me feel that awesome is A+ in my book.

I played about 30 minutes of Alpha Protocol before quitting out of frustration when I hit the first Hacking minigame. It didn't help that I was really stoned at the time, but even after looking at a few guides I could not wrap my mind around that shit. Otherwise, it seemed cool and I'll get back to it when I clear out some of the ol' Steam backlog.

Those games aren't exactly current gen though

I admit, I didn't read through the whole OP. Lol.

So in terms of this gen, I would say Folklore, definitely, and Warhawk.

Zack & Wiki also deserves more love.

Updated/ completed the OP with my list. Feel free to agree or refute.

Gears of War deserves more love? This is one of the best selling games *ever* on the 360 (almost 6 million copies) and got a shitload of "game of the year" nominations.

I know it seems contradictory, but read my reason. I'm looking at it from a development perspective, not a gamer's

Gears of War? really dude? Really? put Halo, Modren Warfare ,AssCreed,Mario Galaxy and Uncharted if that what underrated mean in your book.

anyway.

Beautiful game, the little murder/detective story turn into a fantasy adventure, and keep you wondering who is really the killer, you will enjoy "mature-pokemon" style game with many monster to catch and upgrade their powers, cool gameplay with RPG elements and best use of Sixaxis ever, everyone with PS3 need to play it.

The Bourne Conspiracy deserves way more appreciation. Sure it can be a little janky, but there is something very fun about the hand to hand combat.

lost winds and its sequel.

doesn't get the same praise or even just the same amount of discussion as the big name games on the other download platforms, maybe because wiiware in general is so under the radar or maybe because others just don't like it near as much as i do, possibly because it's easy and uses established ideas or they just found them unmemorable, but i think they are wonderful. a laid back and very peaceful tone through the entire thing makes it a rather comfortable game to play, helped of course by the charming art style, beautiful natural environments and a length that means it never outstays its welcome. then the simple but elegantly pulled off and combined platforming, puzzle and exploration gameplay, with some clever use of the split nature of the wii controls to control two different forces that come together (as well as the pointer which works nicely here), makes it enjoyable to play. it's just a really nice little set of games.

I was actually asking my friend about Folklore last night. Unfortunately he's one of those types that has about 600 games and has only actually started half of them, so he had no opinion on it. This description piques my interest about it, though, so I may pick it up if I have the cash.

I know it seems contradictory, but read my reason. I'm looking at it from a development perspective, not a gamer's

Though Gears of War is a well recognized game, winning many awards and selling millions of copies, I think people undermine and even forget how much it has effected the industry. In my opinion, Gears is the first true "next-gen" game, especially in regards to it's visuals. For many, this was the next step in gaming. All of us, most likely, know at least one person in our group of friends who bought a 360 solely for this game. Incredible graphics aside, Gears also set new standards with it's fantastic orchestral score as well as it's solid co-op features. Epic, being a major PC developer, took a major risk making a console game. Not only that, but they proved that third person shooters could be just as good, if not better than their first person counter parts. Lastly the success of Gears of War also helped in the licensing of the UE3, which is now used by many high profile game developers.

Again, I think it's influence in game development, when it comes to graphics (textures, lighting, filters, ect), music and co-op features are forgotten. People see it as another brown/ gray dudebro shooter.

Ys Seven

From my lurking days it seemed like discussion went dead after a couple of weeks.

Best RPG I played last year. Would be awesome if more GAF folk picked it up.

-Gameplay was exhilarating
-Music was amazing and catchy
-Graphics were 3D but clean
-Was old school text based no voices (positive in this case)
-Story was pretty standard but I found it charming

I can't say Halo Reach but you can put Gears of War?

I'm out.

You can, in regards to how Bungie's design has/ hasn't influenced other develpers. But bemoaning how there aren't enough people playing it is absurd. A lot of people play Halo. A lot of people play Gears. But do you think people are aware of the influence Epic has had with it's game and the UE3? I don't think so.

EDIT

Basically, you can talk about Halo or FF if you want. But anything outside of those games' design principles and how they've effected other games, is silly.
