Though Gears of War is a well recognized game, winning many awards and selling millions of copies, I think people undermine and even forget how much it has effected the industry. In my opinion, Gears is the first true "next-gen" game, especially in regards to it's visuals. For many, this was the next step in gaming. All of us, most likely, know at least one person in our group of friends who bought a 360 solely for this game. Incredible graphics aside, Gears also set new standards with it's fantastic orchestral score as well as it's solid co-op features. Epic, being a major PC developer, took a major risk making a console game. Not only that, but they proved that third person shooters could be just as good, if not better than their first person counter parts. Lastly the success of Gears of War also helped in the licensing of the UE3, which is now used by many high profile game developers.
