Wow, please don't let this thread die. We need more of these. This was possibly the best thread on GAF in a long long time.

Cave Glow Worms

These creatures produce silk from glands within their mouths. These silk strands are covered in mucus, they also have a blue light on their backside caused by a chemical reaction, they use it as a lure to attract insects to their strands of mucus. After being caught the insects are slowly reeled in and consumed alive.

Candiru the parasitic catfish

This fish is known to attack humans and animals and swim into their orifices (the urethra, anus, or vagina). The spines protruding from the fish make it very difficult, and extremely painful to remove them. They are the most feared fish in the Amazon, more so than Piranha.

Far too close for comfort.

Coelacanth

Coelacanths were believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period, until the first Latimeria specimen was found off the east coast of South Africa, off the Chalumna River in 1938. In 1999 a different species of Coelacanth was found in Indonesia.

I know someone who was unfortunate enough to be "attacked" by this thing in Brazil. She had to have surgery to get it removed and was in the hospital for months. Gave me nightmares for weeks. The stuff of F'ed up hentai anime come to life.

The honey badger!

honey_badger_02.jpg

Raiding beehives, eating poisonous snakes, this badger doesnt take no for an answer.
Famous for being the most fearless animal in the world.
Here is one in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c81bcjyfn6U&feature=related

Now they generally dont fight with the big felines but if caught within such an encounter they will go for the scrotum of the animal while waiting it to bleed to dead (and yes, they can wait for that because they are tanks!).

Just read this famous and rare encounter between an old, handicapped honey badger and a Leopard:

Adult honey badgers rarely serve as prey for lions and leopards; their ferocity and thick, loose skin makes it difficult to grip or suffocate them. Old, weak honey badgers are more likely to fall prey to leopards, lions, and pythons, but even old honey badgers will defend themselves as vigorously as possible. In one case, shown on a television program on Animal Planet, an old female honey badger that was nearly toothless and blind in one eye was attacked by a leopard. It took the leopard approximately one hour to kill the honey badger.

Maybe it's just 'cause I'm tired and heavily medicated, but I was cracking up at that whole Honey Badger video. Dude's like a fucking crackhead, diving into that swarming bee hive to get the honey, then eating it while the bees are still going apeshit all around him. :lol

Then he almost dies from that snake's poison, only to wake up and continue eating the damn thing. :lol

Holy fuck! :lol New favorite animal confirmed!

That Honey Badger killed a Puff Adder and started eating it, got bit and passed out due to the venom...then woke up and carried on eating it:lol

Is that thing about the scrotum true? I know Clarkson mentioned it on Top Gear once but I just thought it was a rumour

wowzer, so gross. The most disturbing stuff are the deep see sounds tho. Anyone remember those scientist that drilled somewhere in siberia and suddenly heard the most terrifying human screams from the deepest holes? I believe it was fake, but fuck, scary.

No, but I remember some people hearing something like that from a tree.

"The dugong is a cousin of the manatee and is closely related to the elephant. The dugong is unique in that it has a split (whale-like) tail and will “perch” underwater on its tail in order to keep its head above water. The dugong is thought to have inspired ancient myths about mermaids. The dugong is threatened by poachers who hunt the animal for its meat, oil, skin and bones. It is extremely endangered."

Awh it's a Sea Cow. I love Dugongs. I want one as a pet to keep in the pool.

Also, as soon as I saw this thread I thought Coconut Crab!!!

PS. Best thread ever. Love it.

Solifugae also known as camel spiders, wind scorpions.

Solifugae are not true spiders, which are from a different order, Araneae. Like scorpions and harvestmen, they belong to a distinct arachnid order.
