Water Bug
This sentence makes me chuckle. :loldonkeymonkey said:What in the name of Jesus, protector of all that is good and holy is that thing?
Male Water bugs (Belostomatidae) carry eggs on their backs.Teknoman said:Please tell me thats not on a person. Also wtf are those things on it's back? Still dont understand how people let weird creatures on their arms/hands/whatever for the sake of pictures.

This parasite attaches itself at the base of the spotted rose snapper's (Lutjanus guttatus) tongue, entering the fish's mouth through its gills. It then proceeds to extract blood through the claws on its front three pairs of legs. As the parasite grows, less and less blood reaches the tongue, and eventually the organ atrophies from lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. The fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue. It appears that the parasite does not cause any other damage to the host fish

I just can't imagine the kinds of things that live deep in the ocean, miles and miles and miles below the level humans can currently reach. I TRY to imagine, and I just...can't.Wallach said:FUCK the entire ocean, I swear to god. What's even worse is that there is still a ton of life down there that we have never discovered. You know why Cthulhu sleeps beneath the waves? Because fuck the ocean, that's why.

It's so damn dark, and there's so much pressure, and it's so damn cold, and there is just so much space down there for something to live in. The ocean averages over 2 miles in depth. Some points go as far as 6 or 7 miles in depth.
Zeliard said:Not to mention the deep sea gigantism phenomenon. There are probably huge creatures down there we haven't discovered yet, such as the giant squid that was once considered a myth. So not only do we have no clue what else is down there, but chances are it's physically massive, which is just freaky to consider.

During each arc, the female releases 3-10 eggs, which get embedded in the skin on her back by the male's movements. After implantation the eggs sink into the skin and form pockets over a period of several days, eventually taking on the appearance of an irregular honeycomb. The larvae develop through the tadpole stage inside these pockets, eventually emerging from the mother's back as fully developed toads.
And hatching...
