The Witch - Movie, Has Just Been Named an Official 'Satanic Experience'

Can I ask why? Just seems like an odd reaction to what isn't really important news in the scheme of things.

It Follows fell apart for me when the dread faded away at about a quarter of the way through the movie. Really felt like it was one of those movies that had an excellent idea and had no clue what to do with it after establishing the threat.

Didn't help that the writing wasn't great, thankfully it was well shot and had a decent, if a bit overbearing, film score.

Well, I love horror but I want to hear an official response from the director before proceeding. If he endorses their endorsement, or chuckles it off, I'm out. I'm just not interested in anything a Satanist group publicly proclaims important enough - for whatever reason - to endorse. There's some element about the content that they've latched onto that speaks to them in such compelling tone that they've made public comment about how people should see it. That's a red flag for me.

I'm not going to get on the pulpit and tell others NOT to see it, or sign any boycott or petitions because people will do what they want.

But if it's motivating enough for them to speak out on it, then that's enough for me to avoid it. That's just me and my beliefs. I don't impose that on anyone.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

You do realize most modern day satanists are actually fighting a good fight in a lot of ways right? When religious zealots try crap, especially those that infringe on the rights of others they jump in to help in their own way, often using the negative connotations and associations with their religion as a weapon.

For example I believe they have sued to stop anti scoring bills becoming laws on the grounds of infringing on their religious freedoms.

Satanists are alright in my book.

I find it curious that you'd be okay with watching a movie that glorifies Satan and evil, but not a semi-satirical group that uses "Satan" (whom they don't believe exists) as a cover to promote humanistic ideals.

Awesome film, saw it at a festival last year.

It's a slow burn horror film, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the best thing is does is ooze atmosphere. It's very oppressive, particularly enforced by the great acting and audio track (that surround sound... *shudder).

As for the endorsement it's getting from the ST, well, I can see what angle they're coming from, but the film is certainly more than that. It tackles a lot of ideas beyond the main plot line.

as a filmmaker, I love horror because it's one of the few genres of filmmaking that is made to elicit a range of responses from the viewer. I think some of the best filmmakers dabble with horror, if for no other reason than to play with mood and atmosphere. I love horror, mostly FOR mood. I grew up watching horror with my mother when I was a kid. I just had to turn my head at the gore or the sex. I hate slasher flicks, and I hate torture porn. For reference, Lords of Salem was one of the best horror movies I've seen in years.

FILM is an incredibly powerful tool. Images resonate. A skilled filmmaker can make all of his intent 'on the nose', or get super subliminal and leave you feeling some kind of way after the credits roll, and you're unsure why.

Intent is EVERYTHING for me. Some films are just entertainment. Some are meant to start conversation. Some are propaganda. Some are more...insidious.

I was excited about The Witch because it looks like the filmmaker is really strong in the craft of atmosphere building. It's rare that you get 'The Real Deal', like a Ti West and his House of The Devil, ie, somebody that truly knows what they're doing when it comes to making this type of stuff. That kind of thing really energizes me.

But along with being a filmmaker, I'm also a Christian. My radar goes off on certain things, and like I said, intent is everything for me.

For ME.

Again, I don't impose my beliefs or values on anyone else. But for ME, the imagery and mood and tone of the movie looks strong enough to be taken seriously. The same things that appeal to me as a filmmaker are equally frightening in the hands of someone who is okay aligning himself with the underground marketing of a Satanic group. That makes me question his INTENT.

And for that reason, I bow out.

What do you have against satanists?

I've seen it and I didn't think it was very good. :/ I was super hyped before sundance 2015 too.

IIRC, the trailer isn't highlighting a lot of the dialogue. It is TOUGH to understand what they are saying due to the use of true dialect/verbiage of the time. It's one of the few instances that I wish it did receive a little bit of Hollywood influence/catered to the audience. It's quite slow, plodding, misses some great opportunities for dread. The ending scene/shot is super dope tho.

Have a feeling it will be a similar divide as it follows.

ALL THAT SAID, a lot of films aren't finished when they premiere for the first time at festivals. I hope they went back into the film and tinkered with it more.

nah, not gonna listen to any hype, don't wanna get Babadook'd again.

I'll watch and confirm for myself if it deserves the Satan seal of approval.

I liked Babadook. What let me down was it follows. That movie was meh.

Just out of curiosity, this movie was shown in Sundance January 2015 and multiple other festivals up until December and then at last will be released in February 2016.
How come it's premieres for the public over a year after it was first shown?

Maybe it couldn't find a distributor. I've been to Sundance and saw films that were never released.

I knew nothing about this film, but after seeing the goat I'm intrigued.

Don't ask me why, but I feel like I have a Jeff Minter-like thing for goats.

Goats are cray. I can't tell if they're stupid or evil but I want one.

Satanists latch on to themes and imagery traditionally considered Satanic. Goats, witches, pentacles. It's pure theater that's purposefully informed by religious and/or cultural taboos. The exploitation of symbols for style and shock value. Nothing to get worked up over.

Nationwide release, so a seven percent chance that my theater will get it.

But yeah, this just seems like A24 is just embracing this for marketing purposes since the trailer didn't really seem to do much for the average movie goer. My coworkers were talking about the boy and the Forest before they came out, I was the only one bringing up The Witch.

To my recollection LaVey said something similar about Rosemary's Baby, and sneered at The Exorcist for its more biblical approach.

That's a puzzling endorsement lol, unless he was talking just about the communal aspect of the coven/sect. Let's all come together now and take part in this jolly ol tradition of forced Satanic insemination!

IIRC, he was talking about how they depicted the Satanists; intelligent and relatively normal people, instead of raving lunatics. Apparently Church of Satan also got a lot of exposure due to the film, whereas The Exorcist was said to have driven people back to the church. LaVey also claimed he was somehow involved in the making of Rosemary's Baby, but I think that wasn't true.

Ah, that makes more sense. Yeah I seem to recall reading he supposedly had an advisory role towards the film, guess that's not the case. I was just talking to my mother the other day about horror films and she said that watching Exorcist in theaters was what drove her away from horror altogether xD

People got shook by that picture at time of release.
