The Witcher 3 probably not 1080P on consoles

The Witcher 2 was very graphically intensive. Even with a GTX 570 and Intel i5 3570k, which murders the Xbox One and PS4, I struggled to run it smoothly on very high settings at 1080p.

I can't wait to play this on PC. It looks outstanding.

TW2 was rather poorly optimized. It looked nice, but not nice enough to warrant its poor performance. Let's hope they're better at optimizing now...

Ideally, we’re pushing for 30 frames per second. The resolution, honestly, it depends; we’re working on it, we’re trying to get it as high as possible. If we can make it at 1080P, sure, but I don’t know if it’s going to make it. To be honest, I really don’t know. Probably not. But for sure, we need it to run at a smooth frame rate, so at least 30 FPS.

Hmmmmm, sounds like I'll be picking this up for PC instead. A bummer that this game is struggling with 1080 and 30 fps on consoles; I prefer to play on the PS ecosystem (trophies, remote play and all that).

Also I remember hearing on the GB E3 panels from the Witcher 3 guys saying it was actually easier for them to transition to the XB1 than PS4; wonder if it's the same now.

Already, preorder the Steam PC version. Being so weak, consoles are disappointing this gen. Sadly, my PS4, X1 and Wii U are only for exclusives.

Odd considering they sounded much more confident regarding resolution during E3. I haven't heard of many games dropping res this late in development.

"A 900p resolution is CD Projekt's "minimum", Mamais said. "We will hit 900p no problem. We'd like to get it up to 1080p on Xbox One. That's our goal."

"As expected, on PlayStation 4 Witcher 3 outputs at 1080p resolution."

Witcher 3 has a partnership with Nvidia for Hair/fur simulation, right?

They utilize Nvidia Gameworks. We know the game will utilize PhysX for at least hair simulation (Hairworks), as well as HBAO+ (this makes a bigger difference than you'd think, seriously), and I think TXAA.

I'd much rather have high settings at 900p than lower at 1080p.

So I'm guessing it's another watchdogs.
900 for ps4 and that 800 something for xbone.

TW2 actually ran pretty damn well for me, especially after a few of the patches. As long as you didn't use Cinematic DOF and Ubersampling.

Really? I guess i missed that. Not that it affects me in any way but i thought they were "above" of such practices.
From available evidence it's barely a deal of note. MS puts Witcher in their shows and gives it additional marketing visibility. MS gets a couple of additional physical goodies in the LE but the game remains same content on all platforms and devs confirmed there will never be any actual game content exclusive to any platform.

Really hard to find fault with it IMHO - it's like a microscopic bending of their stated principles for extra free marketing and it doesn't even touch the game itself.

I'm pretty sure Assassins Creed Unity will run at 720p for the ps4 and it looks amazing. Just get used to the possibility that not every game will run at 1080p and you won't be disappointed.

This... if they somehow downgraded the PS4 version then I believe in the parity.

Here's some Nvidia features that will be in the PC version(Taken from Nvidia's E3 2013 presentation):
bloom shafts
aerial perspective fog
volume based translucency
semi-volumetric clouds
fur simulation
flexible water simulation
forward lit soft particles
water tessellation
screen space decals
DirectX 11 terrain tessellation
screen space real-time reflections

I don't think it's a parity issue, probably just a feature got added that's extra costly in the past few months. They still have about six months of work left to go.

The "As expected..." quote is from eurogamer, not the CDPR rep. The CDPR rep simply says that they anticipate being able to hit 1080p easier on PS4 than XB1.

What the..

So, what changed between then and now? This is kind of weird.

Or they had an unexpected setback. But yeah sure let's pick up the torches and start screaming parity without any hard evidence.

Seeing this list makes me sad as an AMD user. Fuck game features that only works with one brand.

It works on AMD GPUs as well. What made you think only Nvidia owners would benefit ?
It's already used in the last COD by the way.

MESMERIZING. I don't have Nvidia tho :T

PC is where it will look and run the best, but I don't think that was ever in dispute...

This would always theoretically ring true since PCs have a higher ceiling, but hearing that it's struggling to meet what most current gen consoles have been hitting (1080p and solid 30/60 fps, at least on PS4), it's disappointing to hear that devs are struggling with meeting them.

I'm pretty sure Assassins Creed Unity will run at 720p for the ps4 and it looks amazing. Just get used to the possibility that not every game will run at 1080p and you won't be disappointed.

I feel like now more than ever, console consumers are more adamant about having native res games and solid frame rates. Until later in the generation where devs are squeezing every last drop of power and making truly amazing looking games, there MIGHT be an argument for going down to 720 again.

Geez guys, when I can't hit at least 30fps at 1080p on my aging PC I just kill SSAO and drop the shadow quality down to medium. Barely notice it.
Come on.
Well those are the kinds of choices that they will face, and why they cant definitively say anything at the moment. People like to speak of 'optimization, optimization', but there is a point where you just have to admit, "Ok, this machine just isn't capable of the target we're trying to hit". At which point, something has to give. Is it framerate? Is it resolution? Is it graphical effects?

You say you drop SSAO, but frankly, a lack of ambient occlusion these days looks quite bad for many of us. It immediately looks like a very flat image. No, I think some form of AO has to stay, and SSAO is a less demanding choice than HBAO. As for shadows, console games often already run 'medium'-ish sort of settings for this. Its entirely likely they are already running with 'less than Ultra' shadow quality.

Nonsense. Just because people don't have the common sense to disable supersampling does not mean the game is badly optimized. My old gtx560ti ran the game perfectly fine maxed at 1080p after I disabled it.

That's exactly how I read it back then too. People kind of jumped to conclusions based on this article.

I wanted to say precisely this, but didn't want to step on anyone's toes.

SCNR :(

Seriously though, I hope that they can achieve at least 900p on XBO and 1080p on PS4 in addition to rock-solid 30 FPS. This is a games which would really benefit from a higher resolution due to it's amazing vistas and draw distance.

Why would they say that if he didn't get confirmation from CDPR? It was probably just the answer to a yes/no question so he didn't quite directly for the sake of prose.

It is, albeit overstated to get a rise out of some, are you gonna refute my claim that there is much potential?

"Seeing who posted it" who are you and why are you biased towards me?
You have a history of being very.....enthusiastic about the PS4, to put it nicely.

PS4 is not a weak machine by any means, but its probably not quite the 'beast' of a machine some people think it is, either. At least not by the standards of a developer used to working on PC as their primary platform.

It's already used in the last COD by the way.

There's still a good chance it'll run about as well as TressFX did on Nvidia cards back when TR was released, as in it's better to turn them off until they've had the chance to fix it with drivers. You can almost guarantee that if the game is sponsored by AMD or Nvidia, it'll have problems when using the wrong colored card.

Or in Nvidia's case, you'll still have problems even with the right color.

You need a blue card to get it to work properly
