The Xbox 360 defect thread

Is anyone else experiencing problems with playing/viewing DVD's? Thusfar I've had to deal with the following stuff:

-After I paused once the image starts to 'jitter'.
-For no reason the DVD skips or glitches every 10 seconds or so.
-Sometimes this results in sound desynchronization.

Pretty damn sketchy if you ask me. Never had any problems with the old xbox.

I've only tested one DVD on the 360 and that stuttered like crazy. I have a separate DVD player anyway so I don't care (and the 360 is far too loud to use as a DVD player, IMO) but it's pretty poor, IMO. Image quality seemed ok but the stutter was terrible. If that happened on a standalone DVD player, the manufacturer would re-call it and get it fixed

Yeah, you should read the Dutch fora, its crazy how many people have had problems with DVD playback. I think its pretty safe to say that every 360 has some issues regarding DVD's. The problem is, I dont have a standalone DVD player and I think a 400 dollar machine should be able to do something as simple as playing DVD's.

Mine seems to have problems playing back DVD-Rs. One spun in the tray for a minute and then came up unreadable. Another one seemed to play fine for 30 secons, then started to stutter and skip like yours did, and then shut down.

When I put them into my regular DVD player, they played back fine, with no problem.

It definitely should be able to play DVDs without a problem. My five year old PS2 does it without a problem. You can buy a DVD player for about £30 now and that would play DVDs without this stutter problem. There really is no excuse for it to be that bad.

I have noticed the stuttering after I press play from it being paused. It only does it for a brief second and it doesn't seem to do it every time.

Its not a big deal to me as I just want to watch the movie.

Has anyone experienced their Xbox 360 lock up when interfacing with the blades while a game is running? I don't think my 360 is overheating, but sometimes when I am using the standard Xbox 360 menu system and a game is running - it fucks up and hangs. I think there are some problems with interactions between the games and the main xbox system.

For instance, I went to look at someones Gamer card while preparing to race in PGR3, and once I looked at the card, I couldn't back out of it. I was stuck and had to reboot my 360.

Yeah, that's happened to me twice. Once was with PGR3, and I did pretty much the same thing you did. I was logging on, and someone signed in, so I pressed the Guide button and the thing just froze

The other time was playing FF11 last week. I was trying to send a message to three people at once. They were all in my party and since I couldn't actually talk to them it was easier this way. It was going really slowly through the menus so I thought it might crash. I clicked on someone's name and the whole thing just died on me. I had to reset it, which meant I'd lost that whole night's progress. I wasn't very happy

Keep your remote handy if you have one.

Since i've bought a VGA Cable for my system (yesterday) it's been locking up playing NBA 2k6. I cant even complete a game anymore and it just freezes in the 2nd quarter. There are no scratches on the disk and is becomin annoying.

Finally, after about two months of waiting, my replacement hard drive showed up yesterday...

Thanks to everyone on GAF who helped me get this sorted out. :)

OK, my 360 isn't defective, but I figured this would be the best thread to post my novel-length bitching about my problem since there's a good deal of complaining about MS customer service in here.

I've spent SEVEN HOURS on the phone with XBL tech support this week. Seven hours and they still haven't fixed my problem. I bought a new 360 on Tuesday. Since then I've been unable to recover my XBL account. There is a problem with the Passport account my tag is tied to, and the problem seems to be on the Xbox end, despite numerous attempts to blame me, my router, and my computer. At this point I'm not even sure what the problem IS, as I've heard so many different stories from different tech support folks that I've lost count, but it's a problem that SHOULD be easily remedied, but apparently no one at XBL has the power to fix it.

I've called them about 10 times now.

My first call was maybe 30 seconds long. Woman tells me that my problem will be remedied by making a new Passport account. She's totally dismissive and acts like it's a really obvious solution and I'm an idiot for not trying it. Guess what? It doesn't work.

I call back. Get this angry, redneck sounding guy who breathes really heavy. My problem seems to be really stressing him out and I'm worried he might have a stroke. At one point he asks me "How did you get into this mess, sir?" in a real snotty voice. I'm still kicking myself for not snapping back at him. He spends half an hour trying to blame my router and the fact that my nephew (who has an XBL account under my name) may be playing at the moment. He tells me to write Passport, check to see if the kid's playing, and call back.

Of course the kid's not playing. Not that it would've made a difference if he were. I call back later that night. I spend another hour and a half on the phone. They're unable to solve the problem, so they tell me someone higher up than a supervisor will be giving me a call to fix the issue.

I finally get a reply from Passport 36 hours after I emailed them. Their solution: change my password (for an account that isn't even linked to my gamertag) and contact XBL. I don't think they even read my email.

By Wednesday evening no one's called. So I call them. I figure I'd ask if they can just kill my account and credit the remaining subscription to a new account. "No, we don't offer refunds after the first 60 days." But I'm not asking for a refund! They say they can't do it. Then the guy wastes another hour of my time trying the same things everyone else did. I keep telling him we tried this already and asking to speak to a supervisor, which eventually happens.

Too bad this guy is the least help yet. By the end of the call he totally breaks down and reveals himself to be a total moron. He suggests I go to the Passport website and "enter your password so you can change your password." I point out that this is impossible - the Passport account you guys say my gamertag is tied to is for an email address that doesn't exist, and I don't KNOW the password for it. "But if you go the the site and type in the password it'll give you your password." ?!?!? I finally lose my patience at this point, and just start going off on how terrible this whole setup is. I don't curse, I don't shout, but I was very, very angry. I ask to speak to someone else, and he tells me there's no one above him, and all the other supervisors won't be able to help. I ask when I'll finally hear from whoever was supposed to call. He says the request was filed on that day (which it was - Eastern time. But MS is in WA, right? Sooo either they're really slow, or this guy's lying.) and it would be 2-3 Days

30 hours after sending another email to Passport I get a reply, telling me that they're contacting someone else to look into it. No one's contacted me since then.

It's been more than 3 days, so today I called 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. I'm on hold for like 10 minutes before I'm connected to some guy who sounds like he's talking through a kazoo. I tell him he's all distorted and hard to understand. He asks what I think was "Can you hear me now?" about 6 times, each time sounding more and more distorted. I hang up.

When I call back I get some mumbly joe I can barely understand, which seems to be a big problem with XBL reps, but it's an improvement over the last guy. I give him my reference number and mention how I was supposed to get a call and never did. He said they should call today or tomorrow, but he'll connect me to a supervisor and puts me on hold. For 20 minutes. And then I'm disconnected.

I call back two more times. I'm on hold for a very long time each time, before reaching a person who puts me on hold. And disconnects me.

So all that took another hour of my life. I finally get a person who doesn't hang up on me. I ask to speak to a supervisor about not receiving any calls and give her my reference number. Instead of connecting me to a supervisor she asks me all the same questions that should be on my reference-whatever. She thinks she can solve the problem. This leads to 2 hours of being on hold with the occasional break-in to let me know that she's working with her supervisor, they've figured out the problem, and it'll be solved by the time I get off the phone. Even though I was told repeatedly that supervisors aren't able to touch anything Passport related. I wonder why she doesn't just put me on the phone with him, but after I speak to the guy I'm glad she didn't - he's the least articulate guy I've spoken to so far.

So, yeah, 2 hours later. She comes on and tells me that she's going to connect me to the supervisor. And he's another mushmouthed idiot. He said he changed my info, but they won't know if it worked for 24-48 hours. After all the different stories I've heard, and after all the times I've been told they can't edit the info, I doubt this is going to work, and I say so. I ask about speaking to someone higher up. He says he's as high as it goes (which is the total opposite of what I heard from every OTHER supervisor) and that even though I'm on a call list no one will be calling me this weekend. So yeah, another contradiction. Either they're all idiots, or they're all liars. Or both.

I say I'm fed up and if this isn't resolved soon I'm going to return the 360, the games I've bought for it, and to contact the Better Business Bureau, since that seemed to work for some of you guys. The guy just says "I'm sorry, sir. I can't do anything" in a reall pissy voice over and over. He tells me to call 1-800-MICROSOFT. I hang up.

So I've wasted a huge chunk of time on something really stupid. It really seems like they expect me to just cancel this account and sign up for a new one. Which I'm not doing. I'm not really attached to this account, and I can (kinda) afford to lose the remaining time on it, but I refuse to. I shouldn't HAVE to. If I lock my keys in my car I don't need to buy a new car, y'know? (And this isn't a matter of me losing my password - there's something VERY wrong with the way the 360 handles Passport account creation when migrating an XBL account, and I've yet to get the same explanation twice from the XBL reps.) This is a problem that should be remedied with a few keystrokes, but thanks to some corporate red tape and a totally unfriendly system that benefits only MS no one's able to do it. Unless this guy did. Which I doubt. I guess I'll find out by Monday.

And if it's not fixed by then I'm dumping this 360. I'll also complain to the BBB, though I know that won't do much good. This is the absolute worst customer service experience I've ever had.

Well, my 360 is officially lost in the mail. FUCK.

Did find out, UPS has 1700 packages a day being delivered to MS' repair center. Thats UPS alone.. 5% defect rate my ass.

1700?! how the fuck did you manage to find that out? and don't forget MS mainly uses DHL so if thats just UPS I wonder what DHL's transferes are!

Stooge...yours did too? So did mine! UPS is doing the same fuckin thing to me. I shipped it last Saturday and UPS cant find my package. Those dumbasses at MS send me DHL directions w/ a UPS box...so nobody can find it. I'm beyond pissed right now.

and EGM, DHL is no longer the shipper of MS, it's exclusively UPS. ANd they still gave me DHL directions.

If my system doesnt arrive on monday, i'm gonna demand they send me a replacement until my system gets found.

the woman was trying to find my package without the tracking number and basically told me there were over 1700 shipments a day to that facility from people without UPS accounts (meaning individual shippers).. she may have been lying/exagerating, but that was the reason she wasnt going to try and find mine.

Well... looks like mine is starting to go belly up, I really hope not though! Started a few days ago, but every once in a while the 360 would freeze and I'd have to hard reboot it. Now when I play PDZ or Fight Night there's a blue noise/fuzz in the darker areas of the screen. Reading through this thread it seems to be an overheating GPU problem. My question is whether it's a permanent thing that I'm gonna have to go to MS about, or if I just let it cool off for a while I'll be alright. I had the 360 on quite a bit this weekend so maybe if I let it cool for a bit it should be ok? It's in a rather well ventilated area, and I try to keep it cool, but there's a lot of electronics in this room and the room can get kind of hot.

Been going for 2 months fine, now mines a dud. MS support wearnt too bad about it, second i described the problem he booked a pickup, rather then taking me through 30 minites of pointless testing first.

Pickup date is within three days though, which is hardly very specific. I was told i would lose all my saves too, do i even HAVE to give them the hard drive? I'd rather not lose everything and its not as if you can actually go out and buy a memory card to back it up too. Since 360 accessories are out of stock everywhere.

I don't want to depress you in any way, but those three days have turned into five weeks for me. And this is after calling them every few days and pushing them. My initial request for the boxes was never filed and I had to request them again. The boxes then arrived in a few days. I sent my system, HD and power cables off. They received them the day after according to my Purolator account. They only acknowledged they had it received them 7 days after they actually did. Then they played the delay game with me. They are obviously very low or backed up with replacements. I received the console two weeks ago, without an HD or power cables. Useless. I called and got a little angry. Received the HD on wednesday. No power cables. Pushed again and they told me it would go overnight. Next day: nothing. Called again only to be told for some reason they never received the request to send them out. They should be in on Monday. If not, Microsoft is dead to me.

Did he tell you to ship the hard drive, too? If not, you could try hanging on to it. If you don't want to do that you should try hitting up a few of your local Targets. I went to 3 or 4 of them looking for Animal Crossing DS yesterday and noticed that they all had lots of 360 accessories. Hard drives, wireless controllers, and yes, memory cards.

here is my story: (got banned from xbox.com forums for calling MS's customer support SH*T)

My console started to freeze up on the 23rd Decemnber, and on the 25th December it just totally died. I called the customer service on the 26th and I sent them my console with the hard drive on the 3rd and got a refurbished premium back on 13th without the hard drive. So I call them up and said dude where is the hard drive ? they said we are really sorry and we will exchange the console for a brand new, no hassle or waiting time, the turnaround time is 3 bussiness days since the repair center is 30 min drive from me. I sent that in ...... about 3 weeks ago and still nothing back, I called them up and they said the repair center in Missiauga, Ontario is backed up so I have to wait. Anyways i call them up and same excuse. Now the strange thing is that the repair center got my console on the 4th and they didn't touch it till 10th Jan(when I sent the first one in), which I had to call and talk to several supervisors and as ask them where the hell is my console ?
the Second console was sent in on 13th!

Anyways after After that I recieve a call from a Supervisor named Shawn, he said that he sent an email to the repair center in Ontario and he will call me back in an hour and give me the shipping information, this happened 2 mondays ago by the way.. so I waited and no call.

I call them up 2 Wednesdays ago and another supervisor named Shawnie says the same thing, no call yet again on wednesday...

I called them up on Thursday and this time I talk to a supervisor named Nadia and she says the same thing and no call.

and on Monday I called again and talked to another supervior named Benthly, she told me that the last supervisor Nadia is checking my ticked number every hour or so.

The last time I called was thursday and I talked to David, supervisor, he said that since all these idiots are sending emails to the repair center and none of them are getting back any information, he said he is going to file that in as LOST CONSOLE and send me a brand new one after talking to the other supervisors...

Moments laster I recieve a call for my dear Nadia, she says that she didn't get a reponse from the repair center so she is sending them another email..........rofl.. :lol

Now today is the 6th of Feb and my console stopped working on the 25th december. Its been over a month without a console and at this point I donot even care. I am selling my xbox360 with the games I have as soon as I get my console back from MS. I just don't want to deal with this whole bs again.

This is the worst experience I have ever had to deal with any company so far.

Some of the stories in this thread are really scary. Some people have exchanged the thing 2 or 3 times. I hope MS fixes whatever is wrong with their production lines, and that the ones having problems with their 360s get them solved soon.

What's with the 360 cracking people's discs for no reason?

Yeesh. DVD-ROM drives have been on the market for quite some time now, one that's not as
sensitive and noisy shouldn't be too hard to include because they're all dirt cheap.

Don't they spin the game discs in reverse or something? Must be fairly unique designs.

There is a serious problem with Xbox Ontario. I am in the same situation as yourself. My console died on the 26th and I sent it in the 28th. I currently have the console and HD that only arrived last week, and am still waiting for the power cables. So it's useless.

Here's the clincher. I got the same response from you saying that there was a backlog. I called last Tuesday and a customer service representative assured me the power cables would be sent to me overnight post. Next day: nothing. Thursday, I call and a new representative tells me the same thing; if I don't receive it on the weekend, latest Monday. Today: nothing. I call again, this time even more pissed off, as it's been five weeks without a 360. Apparently my previous week's request is being "processed", but apparently all the cables are in stock. Then the guy proceeds to tell me: "Do you need the power block as well?" I am dumbfounded. I said I wanted the power cables. He tells me they are two seperate things and he'll have to make a seperate order for the power block. For the first time, I lost it.

There is something seriously wrong with Microsoft in Ontario. Firstly, I sent in my console, hardrive and both power cables; THEY SHOULD HAVE ON FILE WHAT THEY RECEIVED WHEN I SENT IT IN. I have called Xbox customer service 15 times, I've counted, since I sent my 360 in December. I have been pushing constantly. I have had to REMIND them what they are to send me. This is the worst customer service I've ever received.

I asked the guy who I can call at Microsoft to make a complaint? Someone at Microsoft needs to know that the Missassauga Ontario service center is being run by chimps. This is pathetic. If I don't receive the cables by Friday, I'm going down to Ontario myself to pick them up.

EDIT: My very first call to Xbox customer service assured me I would receive everything 3-4 days after they received them. It has been over five weeks with nothing. I can just imagine people who aren't calling every day never getting their 360 back.

Yea there's a huge customer service problem with MS Ontario. If you read through my posts you'll see how they fucked me over for just over a month till I lost it. Hope everything turns out for you.

I haven't played my X360 since I got the 2 PSU's back before Xmas break in fear that it might fuck up.

I haven't played my X360 since I got the 2 PSU's back before Xmas break in fear that it might fuck up.

thats wat I wanted to do on my christmas break, to the guy who got his xbox back after weeks did they send you a brand new unit or a Refurbished one ? Because if they send me a refurbished one this time I am filing a law suit .. END OF STORY.

How do I tell?

All I know is I tried registering the new Serial # for My Xbox and it told me it was already in use. I don't know if this means it's refurbished. But that's a whole new can of worms once I receive my power cables and am actually able to play with this thing.

I just sent mine off to mississauga today. I only sent the console in, no hdd, cables, power, controller or anything. So we'll see what happens, hopefully I won't have another horror story to share. They've been good so far...

When I received my replacement console, a refurb, along with it came a paper saying that MS would transfer all of the registration info for the console. I think it's standard, so the serial already being in use shouldn't be a problem.

I got my 360 back from repair today... It was sent for repairs to Germany (I'm from Finland) last week (on tuesday) so it was quite fast service from MS. Unfortunately they didnt repair it but replaced it with a new one instead. All my downloaded demos are now gone. :( Well atleast my 360 is now whisper quiet. :)

Just got my Xbox back, exactly 1 week after sending it away. Overall I'm SUPER pleased with the way MS handled my situation. It's the first time I've had a console crap out on me, but I was only out of commission for 8 days or so, with absolutely no cost to myself whatsoever. I got a brand new system that runs cool and quiet, and didn't lose any of my saves because I kept my hard drive here. BOOYA!

Newer Xboxes are super quiet now?

Well compared to my old leaf-blower of a system. My original system was doomed from the beginning; ran super hot, super loud, and just didn't seem solid at all. This one is much better.

I just got mine last week and it's quiet and cool. It's noisy when playing PGR3, but that's just the DVD drive spinning. Didn't expect this to be honest.

Alright guys mine just went out. I was playing FN3 and I had just scored a knockdown then my screen goes black. Turned off system and turned back on and getting 3 red led lights. Reseated, cleaned cables.. changed outlet and nothing just makes a little humming noise when I turn it on. Ive had it since 12/23. Luckily I know the guys pretty well from EB games were I bought it so hopefully I can get a replacement.

While my X360 didn't run hot, it does run very loud. I'm hoping I get a new (plz no refurbed X360 MS) X360 that runs like yours.

As much as it sucks that my X360 has crapped out on me, MS has handled this situation ver well. They were very helpful over the phone and the shipping the console back to them was a snap.

mine went 3 red blinking lights on me after a power surge

thank god it still works :x

I saw that happen to one today (momentary power failure - I didn't even notice cause my PC is plugged into a UPS and I had my headphones on)...the error code seems to be all but the upper right quadrant flashing red. Power cycling it seems to fix it, as long as the power outage didn't cause any lasting damage :)

I also updated the original post with this info...
