The Xbox 360 defect thread

Klover said:
I just wanted to mirror EGM92's experiences a little.

As I posted earlier, on my wireless controller, the left side of my control pad would work fine more than half the time, but it would require multiple button presses to register the rest of the time. However, all the buttons/sticks/triggers worked flawlessly. I got tired of the control pad with menus and arcade games, so I called up MS around the 25-26 of November. After being put on hold far too often, the guy said they would have a box sent to me in a "couple" of days that I could ship my controller back in.

Since they refused to send me a new one first, I went out and bought a wired controller so that I wouldn't be stuck with a big white doorstop/space heater for a week. Aside from the fact that the PC drivers for the controller are horrible, this wired controller had, amazingly enough, the same problem. The control pad would work most of the time, but on this one, the right side of the pad wouldn't register input sometimes. It had problems less frequently than the wireless one, but it's still pissing me off.

Either way, after a week, I still hadn't gotten my box. I call up MS again and ask what is going on. Give them the reference number and they say that no box was ever sent out. So now I'm going to have to wait a few more days to get my box. Well, I waited two more weeks and still no box. I call up again and get routed to some lady who is supposedly a supervisor. She tells me that no box was ever sent out because it is not their policy to send out boxes to customers to get warranty replacement. She said I would have to pay to ship my controller to them, and it would take an unknown amount of time for them to replace my controller. Yeah... thanks a lot MS.

Fast-forward to this week, and I figured I'd move to Plan B. I bought a new wireless controller at the store. I get it home, turn on the system and just try to navigate to blades and dashboard keyboard. The control pad on this controller is the worst of my three. All directions are missing inputs, and missing them much more frequently than my other two. Amazingly enough, the feedback on the triggers was much weaker on this controller than the other two. That controller went right back to the store with a complete refund.

I don't know what I have to do to get a decent controller. Three out of three is too much to be a coincidence. Hell, I have TI99 and Atari 2600 joysticks from the 70's that still work perfectly. The only thing I can figure is that most people use the sticks to move around menus and play the arcade games. Maybe after a big game that uses the control pad comes out (DOA4) more people will see the issue. Either way, I give a strike against $50 controllers that don't work perfectly, and a strike against MS Warranty Service that doesn't know what it is doing.

So I guess their fucking policies are shit. They wanted me to pay too, it fucking pisses me off.

Just to update my post. I got a call back from the supervisor asking me why I contacted the BBB I told him that promises were broken, I have your customer support on tape saying it with names and badge numbers so if you try to say that it's not them the numbers will confirm their identities. I told him if there's PSU on my door step by 10am Saturday morning, my friends willl continue to investigate the matter. He sounded pissed off he was like "you don't have to go through all that trouble we promise you that you will get your PSU as long as you send the one you have now back to us", I then told him that
"I'm not sending anything back and I'm not paying for shipping it back if I were to do so. I'm letting them take care of this matter, you and your people brought this upon yourselves." Again I told him good day and hung up. I didn't swear this time, just in case he was recording that conversation. But now action will be taken. I had to do the exact same thing when futureshop wouldn't fix my damn TV even though I had a 5 year extended warrenty. This Supervisor though was one big American wanker. He had a down south acsent, like how the people talk in rural Kentucky, lol sorry if you're from there it's just something you notice when you visit there.

I think they finally got the message, usually when a supervisor calls back you know someone is going to get in shit. I just hope someone gets fired there for all the fuck ups. I gave my brother the x360 I won from the E10M contest he's very afraid to open it give it to my nephew Xmas morning and then it not work like mine. He already told a lot of his clients what's happened to me and even linked my experience and other to this link here at GAF. People who were going to buy one at work are now afraid to waste 500+ dollars on a console and then have to go through what I did. I've bought all my consoles at launch since the early 90's I never had one problem, the X360 was the first big problem I've ever had with a console. It's a shame though the original Xbox was really good at launch I didn't have any problems till like 3 years later when the Thompson drive died out on me and even then they replaced it with no problem I didn't even have to pay shipping for the unit, they sent me a box I put the console inside took it to the post office and they put it in the back. 2 weeks later I got a return box at my door with a NEW xbox inside since the serials didn't match but my saves were still there.

I went to EB a couple of hours ago and cancelled all of my Pre-orders on games they were shocked at how MS treated me and said if it were to have been bought at EB with the warrenty I would have had a new PSU with 3 days of bringing it in. Ah well I guess MS has lost a customer this gen, and forever. Rev/PS3 FTW!! :lol

The d-pads on both my wireless controllers dropped inputs often. I figured it was a common problem, since I think a few other people were complaining about it, too. A real shame since the controller's awesome otherwise.

Anyone else buy that 2 year warranty? MS customer support has always been great to me but every time I paid for a warranty on anything I got screwed. The most expensive one being when the company providing the warranty on my car went out of buisness.

Plus if EGM92's acting like an asshole he deserves to take one up his.

I bought FutureShop's PSP, which lasts up to 3 years. I find it better because for the most part after the manufacturer warrenty any probs are simply resolved by getting you a new one then and there. Well, that's what we did in BB (same company).

The one guy said that it happened with his wired controller too, in which case its probably the system, not the controller.

I bought the Best Buy Two-Year replacement warranty.

I figure it's more likely a problem with the d-pad design than the system.

Just had my first problem tongiht - in the middle of a GAF PDZ match! I'm guessing it's a overheating issue - trhe system just shut off. I'm going to call and figure out what's going on tomorrow, I'm to tired for this sh*t.

I have the same problem, but only when I'm typing in names or going through the menu. When actually playing the game, I don't seem to have any problem moving at all. I'll need a 2D fighter to work on the 360 before I can be sure, but its something to note.

Get your facts straight, I won 2 one I gave to my brother so he can give it to his son for Xmas because they're not well off as I am, the second one I won and deserved to win after I put in 23hr days into a contest for more then a week. I may have got the console free but with the money I saved up to buy the console I bought 2 wireless controllers, P&C kit and 6 different games which came to over 500$CAD if you don't include the games that I had to re-buy because some assholes broke into my house. I'm only acting like an asshole for the way they have treated me, how would you like to be hung up on more then 4 times? I kept my composure but when the supervisor hung up on me it was the last straw. Just keep your mouth shut until you're in the same situation as I am, only then will you have merit to crticize how I acted.

When a represenative from a company tells "your powersupply will be there Wednesday I promise" (call was made on a Monday) and it doesn't arrive, EVER I'm sure you would be just as pissed as I am. When you call back and ask for the status and they tell you it was cancelled how the hell would you feel? would you be overjoyed that it hasn't come yet after almost A MONTH OF WAITING?

You can also shut the fuck up.

2 of my wireless controllers had problems with using the shoulder buttons to navigate through the blades. I would have to press the buttons serveral times for the command to go through in the end I just ended up using the MCE remote.

Other than a few hiccups and the echo problem on Live the first night, I haven't had any problems to speak of. In a fit of superstition a while back, I reoriented the power supply.

"Just in case". :lol

So hostile. You should try winning some people skills in a contest next time.

I'd apologize if that was true. That you did keep your composure until after you were screwed over...but it's clear from your posts that's not how it went and your attitude was piss poor from the beginning.

I finally can enter a thread like this and hang with you 360 owners-the mall called me up today and I picked my Xbox360 up. :)

So far this baby has been great,no fuckups. Never gets hot,and I had PGR3 on for hoursand hours today. Though the power supply is seriously overdone in its size,Jesus Christ. It gets abit warm so I've got it in its own areas so the vents can breeze abit. The console itself never gets hot, barely warm from what I've seen of it so far. I flipped mine over and saw its manufacturing date-12/05/05...pretty much newborn.

I was hoping to post good news, but so far this week...

...I called back on Monday and after I gave the guy my fulfillment order #, was told that my order was screwed up (what? you're kidding me!) and they would have to redo it...again.

Today I called back hoping that they would have a tracking # for me, no tracking number, I was informed that "it usually takes two business days to get a tracking number" (funny, I count two business days from when my order was put in for what, the fourth time?), so I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I got my console on Nov 21 at Zero Hour - it is now over one month (and about 3 weeks since I mailed the old hard drive back, at my expense) and no hard drive is on its way to me, from what I can tell.

To be honest, I'm not even that pissed off anymore, as this has kinda devolved into a twisted bureaucratic comedy :(

I told you the shipping would fuck up... they always fuck up, it seems we're all getting fucked over.

Viral marketing it good though, tell your friends/family not to buy the peice of shit. Or not until they've done a major overhaul on the Customer support. I've done it, I made my girlfriends family cancel 3 pre-orders, my sisters fiancés have now cancelled their pre-orders and some of their friends (HUGE xbox fans.. XBMC fans :) ) have now no plans on buying the console after hearing my horror story. I'm planning to sell the console now, I'm going to get a PSU one way or another and get rid of it.

Yes, let's defend Microsoft.

Sure, EGM92 was pissed, but he deserved to be. Did the supervisor deserve to be insulted? Well.. no, but even if he got the fucking thing free, that sounds like a bunch of shit that didn't need to be done.

Here's a thought, LOL

What if MS engineered the whole failure rate of the system in order to sell more warranties?!? ;)

Seriously, since the Atari 2600, at one time or another I have owned every game system that has ever been released in the US except for Intellivision, Cloecovision, Ballay arcade, and the Atari 5200.. and my 360 is the first game system I have ever actually felt the NEED to buy the extended warranty for (if there was even one available.)

I'm sure I am not alone in this. :)

Just got mine, and everthing works except the USB door is broke and the faceplate is cracked. Not sure if I'll try to handle this though Best Buy or MS. It also sounds like there is a loose piece plastic floating around inside the 360, is that normal?

I loaded up DOA3 and played it for awhile. No problems with my control pad.

I'm starting to notice the D-pad issue myself. 2 out of my 3 controllers are a bit difficult to work with when playing Guantlet and Smash TV. The third is perfectly fine, but with the other two I have a really hard time aiming so I just end up using the control stick.

Is there any warranty I can take advantage of that anybody knows of? I don't have any receipts left from the purchases, but I don't want to be stuck with any controllers that are sketchy in any way.

It's a shame that this problem is coming up since this is probably the best console controller ever created.

EGM, I am not making light of your situation, but shit happens. You cussing someone out, being rude, etc. isn't going to get you shit. Customer Service is going to fuck up at times, especially when they have never supported a product before. Sounds like there are a bunch of new people woking who don't have a clue. If you didn't want the 360 in the first place you wouldn't have been in the contest. So I would take a chill pill, call/e-mail and get it resolved.

BTW I think the digital d-pad just kinda sucks ass, I noticed it was crap when I was playing the Pac-Man minigame in Ridge Racer 6 (oh the frustration!) so I'm not sure you'll be able to find a better one :( Maybe someone will come up with a way to mod it?

Too bad, because it's a nice controller otherwise...it seemed like the Xbox 1 pads didn't suffer from this issue (at least not to this degree), so I'm not sure what went wrong.

Yeah, shit happens, but it seems to be happening to a few of us. Maybe he shouldn't have cussed the guy out, but do you really think it should take over a month to ship him a new power supply, or me a new hard drive? I mean, at this point I'm not sure they're even threatening to send it to me. At least I can play mine, with a dead power supply, that means he's had a 360-shaped doorstop for a MONTH - don't you think you would be pissed, and maybe even lose it on the phone? I know I finally lost it last week - I didn't swear, but I did let a CSR there have it, even though I knew that all she could do was apologize because it was so fucked up.

Like I said, I'm not even pissed anymore. It's taking so long that I'm finding this more amusing than anything...

Just to update my situation:

I guess I really got some people in trouble yesterday. Because today I recieved 2 PSU's at my door from 2 different carriers. One from UPS and one from Purolator. Both sent with Overnight delivery. A couple of hours later my former roommate (BBB employee) called me telling me that everything was taken care of. I thanked him profulsely for the help. He said my recordings turned the situatiion around from not getting my PSU to "OH SHIT WE BETTER DO SOMETHING FAST!

I'm happy now but I'm still not keeping the console, it caused me too much trouble already.

This has nothing to do with MS. I defend any employee trying to help a customer, and is then subjugated to abuse by the customer because they are mad at the situation.

I had the exact same thing.. faceplate cracked vertically at the bottom, and consequently a broken USB door. MS sent me a new faceplace within 2 days. Console also has something loose ratteling a bit inside. Functions OK, so I will just keep it and hope for the best. 2 year warranty is looking good right about now. :)

Mine is doing this weird thing when I go from playing a game and back out to the 360 Dashboard. As the DVD starts to spin at a lower speed, it starts to make this light scraping sound, as if one point on the edge of the disc is scraping each time it spins. If I open the tray it stops, or if I start the game again, it stops as the DVD speeds back up. It only does it on some games (Kameo, PDZ), but not others (RR6). It doesn't seem to be scratching the discs as far as I can see, but it's loud enough to be a little annoying when I'm in the Dashboard. Anyone else have this?

Ive seen MS do the same type of thing they did with EGM. My brother had an issue with getting his free, updated copy of halo so we could use the system link feature (i had an older copy). After 3 weeks of being dicked around MS sent him 4 sealed copies of Halo. Three of them got walmarted of course. He never went to the BBB or anything like that, its just how MS operates. The fact that EGM got his consoles for free and acted like a bitch throughout the entire process makes him a much less sympathetic character though.

the rattling is a ball bearing to determine if the system is vertical or horizontal. That is the story that i heard about it.

I just got the three red lights from my 360 today and called microsoft. They are supposed top be overnighting me a box to send it in so it can be replaced.

Mark another launch day system as a defective one!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the 360 actually makes any mechanical alterations when it is placed vertically rather than horizontally? Im wondering what would be the purpose for the machine to know when it was vertical or horzontal?

the ring of light. your 1p light is always top left horizontal or vertical

There's a small blade next to the DVD laser that retracts away when the system is horizontal.

Uh-oh. Had my first glitch/malfunction/whatever tonight. I was playing COD2 online, and all of a sudden the color went funky. The color blue seemed to be "outlining" everything, and filling in most of the blacks. I finished the game thinking it might just be a software glitch, went to the Dash, and the problem remained. I turned the 360 off, checked my cables (everything seemed all right, but I reseated my video cable just to be sure), and turned it back on. Seems fine now. Does anyone know what might have caused it? I have the 360 out in the open on a stand, with the power supply on a flat surface where there's plenty of air flow.

EDIT:

I just revisited the first two pages of this thread, and the pictures there were almost exactly what my screen looked like. Crap. Hope my GPU isn't overheating.

Third day of playing Perfect Dark Zero and I have already suffered through 2 freezes. It wasn't so bad since they both occurred early in the missions for me. The 360 was set horizontally with plenty of room for circulation. My room is pretty cool, like around 69 degree. My floor is wooden and the power brick was just a bit warm.

edit: 4 freezes so far, the trick with hanging the power brick doesn't fucking work.

OK, I have finally lost it and I just cursed out the CSR I just talked to.

It was very frustrating since I was on hold for most of the, oh, HOUR that I was on the phone. They seem to be using some kind of Voice over IP but they don't have enough bandwidth, so I could only understand about 30% of what the other guy was saying.

They're claiming they never received the hard drive, and since I can't provide proof that I mailed it, they won't send me a new one. (Although, to be honest, I can probably see if it shows up in the shipment logs from my workplace, since I mailed it through work.)

If they had sent me a prepaid box and gotten their story straight from the get go, this never would have happened.

So it looks like I am well and truly fucked. Thanks for nothing, Microsoft.

This is ridiculous. I would continually call every hour until I spoke to a manager or someone even higher. You were basically shafted.

I called back again today and finally got escalated to a supervisor. (I would have demanded it yesterday, but I was already really pissed, and the connection was terrible.) Today their phones seemed to work and the supervisor looked at my records and saw how screwed up everything was, but unfortunately he couldn't do anything for me either...so my case is getting escalated yet again...I'm expecting a call back from them in the next couple of days.

What I think happened is that the order got started under my XBL account, then I mailed my drive back, and then they redid my order (a couple of times) - but these new orders were set up so that they wouldn't send me anything until I sent my old drive back (but my old drive was sent back under the previous order, so...)

It seems that the supervisors and the normal call center guys aren't even in the same building...I wonder how their customer service is really structured.
