This changes EVERYTHING: Mario All-Stars Physics Patch

I remember the first time I realized the brick thing in the remake. In level 4-1, there is a pit with some low hanging bricks, in the original you can jump over the pit while breaking the block, in the All-Stars version you jump the pit, hit the brick, get caught between the other bricks and fall to your death.

I simply had to change the way I went to beat the level so it's not a big deal, but it's still nice to see someone fix it.

EDIT: note that this is only a problem when you're big.

This was the exact portion of the exact level I was thinking of. I always take the under route too. My favorite part about 4-1 is that it's easy to go full speed through the whole level without being slowed down. I also take the under route on this portion with big mario, but in All-Stars you have to do 1 extra jump before the gap to run on the middle bricks. It's not a big deal to most, but to Me, the OP, and possibly you, its serious business. Not everyone will understand our struggle, but I whole heartedly approve of this topic from the OP

I tried the patch and it works great, you'll be able to play the All-Stars version the way you play the NES version.

I always just played the two versions in different ways but felt more comfortable with the NES version, but not anymore, this patch is wonderful.

The idea of withholding fucking Mario Bros. from children over the minute physics change on hitting blocks is the most hilarious things I've ever heard

"can I play supa nintedno?"

"NO"

"whyyyyyyyy"

"BECAUSE THE PHYSICS ARE BROKEN!"

"what's a fisick"

"YOU ARE NO RELATIVE OF MINE"

Holy shit. lol

And what might be the others?

a stiffness that affects everything. it affects your running, which then affects your jump length. for example, it's easy to jump a pit that takes up about half a screen with only a couple of block lengths to collect speed in the original; not so with all-stars, you must run for quite awhile beforehand. this stiffness pervades everything; you can barely jump backwards, and there is very little room for midair control. it feels like ghosts and goblins at times, which is fine in g&g cuz that's how that series is designed, but it's simply awkward in mario. this stiffness along with the borked bricks makes it feel like crap compared to the original.

it's strange that it ended up like this, as the all-stars version of smb3 is nearly identical.

You know, more and more it feels like most people here on GAF aren't even hardcore gamers at all. So many people here know absolutely nothing about even the most popular of games!

This patch is quite the game changer, but I'd still prefer to play the NES original (it still has a better aesthetic IMO, which still makes it the better version, even with the physics at parity)

Plus Lost Levels SNES is still pussified compared to the NES original (per level saving, World 9 being easier etc)

And the missing trampoline in I want to say C-3? Yeah...I prefer the original but I would like to give the patched All-Star version a shot. I'll get around to it later because I'm busy playing other mario games atm.

I think the issue is that the physics aren't actually broken, just different. The SNES versions of SMB1 and the Lost Levels are more in line with SMB2 and SMB3. It's not like with later Sonic games where he struggles to move on an outside loop while upside-down. Only the most attentive and dedicated of fans will actually notice the changes.

You can write onto the official ROM dump disc, even replace existing files? Is that common? A technological breakthrough has passed me by.

Aren't those the kinds of people who would be posting on here though? It's not just Mario, so many people here seem to know nothing more than your average joe shmuck on here about anything game related! (go see the Nintendo Download and the Nintendo Q1 2012 releases threads with the masses of people who thought that Kirby's Block Ball was a brand new 3DS game when it was on Nintendo's last release list (when in actuality it's a VC re-release on 3DS)

I mean, come on! That's hardly an obscure game! People posting on here should know stuff like this!

It's not writing to the ROM on the disc itself (that's impossible). It's an "on the fly" disc patcher called Riivoluton that can run game patches from SD card before starting up a game.

Cool thread. Thanks for the info.

I get the whole jokes due to kids thing, but stuff like this:

...man. This sounds straight-up alien to me. I can't process this.

"but... Doom? And only because of the behavior when strafing?"

"but... Street Fighter? And only because of the behavior when blocking?"

"but... Tetris? And only because of the behavior when rotating?"

i mean, do you play video games?
Man, seriously. The responses here are ridiculous.

No, no. You can keep your gamer hat. It's your hardcore gamer hat you have to give back.

sure thing! how do i delete these demons/dark souls platinums from my PSN card? thank god the MGS4 BBE isn't on there, this transition to casual should go a lot easier!

I've been gaming since I could hold a controller, no way anybody is taking my gamer hat!

i know, m'man. I recall my brother sitting me on a barstool to play Pac-man in the arcades when i was 4...i don't like losing decades of love/effort either, but you heard what that one guy said

So this all started today because none of the little kids in my extended family wanted to play the original NES versions of Mario, they all thought it looked "too ugly" They instead wanted to play the All-Stars version. Now I couldn't let them grow up playing Mario with broken physics so when I came home tonight I had to find a solution.

Jesus Christ, man.

The only huge difference I can see this making is in speed runs, and SDA wouldn't allow you to play a patched version of the game.

I also play All-stars on my actual SNES meaning I wouldn't be able to use this patch anyway.

Also people are acting like SNES Mario has Sonic 4 physics by the way they describe how broken it is.

i hate the way SM:A feels. well SMB3 was decent but i didn't dig some of the background graphic choices.

i don't do speed runs but just my general playstyle is borked in AllStars. instead i have to play with no....."pizzazz" i guess.

Thanks OP, will try this at home, maybe I'll be able to actually play SMB All Stars, to me it always felt like a hack job instead of a good remake.

Now, if someone fixed the annoying backgrounds, it could actually top the NES originals.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

What was your first clue?

I'm surprised at the response.
I thought this was common knowledge too.... Sheesh.

I appreciate the patch notes though. The game always felt off because the momentum was indeed different.

SMB1 always felt kind of off in All Stars.

Gonna check this out to see if it fixes it, but I'd say the block problem is not the only difference.

Still, this kind of thing is always super special awesome. Mad props to the hackers who did this.

I do work as a QA, yes. But what tells me if this is a bug or a design choice?

It does break certain jumps over pits because of blocks suddenly stopping your momentum. It's never been a terribly big deal, but if you've played through SMB1 or 2J, it throws you off since you have to find another way around. And when the SNES games use code taken verbatim from the NES games, it's probably a bug or oversight.

Then there's the graphics and the feeling they set. The most obvious example would be in world 8 of SMB3. On the NES version all the levels there have a completely black background with some minimalistic patterns from time to time. Even the pipes are black and white. This set the tone of the level to be more dark and haunting because, well it's world 8 and you should be scared. In the SNES version on the other hand the backgrounds are all forest-y and colorful. This isn't a huge complaint though.

8-1 on the NES
8-1 on the SNES

I'll just stick with the NES versions.

I really like SMB3 All-Stars, but I'll agree with this particular point. The end of each stage ended with those white outlined structures, like the darkness was taking over the world and you were fighting your way into it. Then you get to World 8 and it's nothing but those outlined structures with a pure black background. They probably thought it looked too simple for the SNES, but they really lost something not carrying that over.

Jesus Christ, man.

Okay, this probably needs some bolding.

What? Nobody withheld anything. They played Mario all day.

Where did I say I withheld anything?

When I said "Now I couldn't let them grow up playing Mario with broken physics so when I came home tonight I had to find a solution."

doesn't that imply that they were infact playing it? I guess my sarcastic tone came off to seriously. How could they grow up playing with "broken physics" if they weren't playing it?

Just thought it was cool that someone made a simple patch for it AND it worked with the Wii disc too.

Let's be clear on this, he didn't yank the game from their hands screaming "NOOOO YOU CAN'T." That's a funny image to have, but that's not what happened. They wanted to play Mario, but they wanted to play the version that looked better. They already did, and so on his own time, he looked up this fix, applied it and reburned it to a disc. They probably won't notice the difference since they only just started playing it, but now he knows they'll be playing the updated port without a known error in it.
