Wait, what is she holding in this picture?
The look on her face adds to it

I'm so sorry I can't make the difference between the slightest of changes that I don't give a fuck about.
but it's not slight, it's like night and day. the brick-breaking is just one of its several problems.
I remember the first time I realized the brick thing in the remake. In level 4-1, there is a pit with some low hanging bricks, in the original you can jump over the pit while breaking the block, in the All-Stars version you jump the pit, hit the brick, get caught between the other bricks and fall to your death.

I simply had to change the way I went to beat the level so it's not a big deal, but it's still nice to see someone fix it.
EDIT: note that this is only a problem when you're big.
This was the exact portion of the exact level I was thinking of. I always take the under route too. My favorite part about 4-1 is that it's easy to go full speed through the whole level without being slowed down. I also take the under route on this portion with big mario, but in All-Stars you have to do 1 extra jump before the gap to run on the middle bricks. It's not a big deal to most, but to Me, the OP, and possibly you, its serious business. Not everyone will understand our struggle, but I whole heartedly approve of this topic from the OP
The idea of withholding fucking Mario Bros. from children over the minute physics change on hitting blocks is the most hilarious things I've ever heard
"can I play supa nintedno?"
"NO"
"whyyyyyyyy"
"BECAUSE THE PHYSICS ARE BROKEN!"
"what's a fisick"
"YOU ARE NO RELATIVE OF MINE"
And what might be the others?
You know, more and more it feels like most people here on GAF aren't even hardcore gamers at all. So many people here know absolutely nothing about even the most popular of games!
This patch is quite the game changer, but I'd still prefer to play the NES original (it still has a better aesthetic IMO, which still makes it the better version, even with the physics at parity)
Plus Lost Levels SNES is still pussified compared to the NES original (per level saving, World 9 being easier etc)
As most people know

First the thread in OT by the guy who got physically ill from listening to mp3s, and now a thread where OP apparently won't let children play SM All-Stars because the physics are broken.
I think the issue is that the physics aren't actually broken, just different. The SNES versions of SMB1 and the Lost Levels are more in line with SMB2 and SMB3. It's not like with later Sonic games where he struggles to move on an outside loop while upside-down. Only the most attentive and dedicated of fans will actually notice the changes.
You can write onto the official ROM dump disc, even replace existing files? Is that common? A technological breakthrough has passed me by.

Man, seriously. The responses here are ridiculous.Cool thread. Thanks for the info.
I get the whole jokes due to kids thing, but stuff like this:
...man. This sounds straight-up alien to me. I can't process this.
"but... Doom? And only because of the behavior when strafing?"
"but... Street Fighter? And only because of the behavior when blocking?"
"but... Tetris? And only because of the behavior when rotating?"
i mean, do you play video games?
bullshit, bro. some guy on the internet said so; i'm gonna need your gamer hat.

No, no. You can keep your gamer hat. It's your hardcore gamer hat you have to give back.
I've been gaming since I could hold a controller, no way anybody is taking my gamer hat!
So this all started today because none of the little kids in my extended family wanted to play the original NES versions of Mario, they all thought it looked "too ugly" They instead wanted to play the All-Stars version. Now I couldn't let them grow up playing Mario with broken physics so when I came home tonight I had to find a solution.

I read "psychic patch" in the title.
Now that I know the truth...not interested. : /
Didn't you work as QA or am I wrong?
The only huge difference I can see this making is in speed runs, and SDA wouldn't allow you to play a patched version of the game.
I also play All-stars on my actual SNES meaning I wouldn't be able to use this patch anyway.
Also people are acting like SNES Mario has Sonic 4 physics by the way they describe how broken it is.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAYou know, more and more it feels like most people here on GAF aren't even hardcore gamers at all.
I'm surprised at the response.
I thought this was common knowledge too.... Sheesh.
I appreciate the patch notes though. The game always felt off because the momentum was indeed different.
I do work as a QA, yes. But what tells me if this is a bug or a design choice?
Then there's the graphics and the feeling they set. The most obvious example would be in world 8 of SMB3. On the NES version all the levels there have a completely black background with some minimalistic patterns from time to time. Even the pipes are black and white. This set the tone of the level to be more dark and haunting because, well it's world 8 and you should be scared. In the SNES version on the other hand the backgrounds are all forest-y and colorful. This isn't a huge complaint though.
8-1 on the NES
8-1 on the SNES
I'll just stick with the NES versions.
Jesus Christ, man.
What? Nobody withheld anything. They played Mario all day.
Where did I say I withheld anything?
When I said "Now I couldn't let them grow up playing Mario with broken physics so when I came home tonight I had to find a solution."
doesn't that imply that they were infact playing it? I guess my sarcastic tone came off to seriously. How could they grow up playing with "broken physics" if they weren't playing it?
Just thought it was cool that someone made a simple patch for it AND it worked with the Wii disc too.
