I remember when Super Metroid used to get Top 5 no question. Actually, I'm kind of surprised it's not in their top 10 here considering they have SM64 and OoT.
No one will be looking at ROTTR 10 years from now talking about how it blended great storytelling with gameplay etc etc etc, the way we constantly talk about TLOU.
Seriously, the Witcher series is important outside just US too. The Witcher 2 was even given to Obama by the Polish PM, Polish are crazy about that series, lol.Bad list. Rise of the Tomb Raider and no Last Of Us, Uncharted, Witcher?
Fallout 3 was bad. Way too many old games. It's intended to look more at history and nostalgia more than actual quality though.
Games that deserved to make it on the list...
-Super Mario Galaxy
-The Witcher 3
-Mass Effect 2
-The Last Of Us
-Dark Souls/Bloodborne
-Assassin's Creed II (maybe)

No Super Metroid in the top 50?
The Oregon Trail instead of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego in the top 10? #NotLikeThis.
The Oregon Trail found a captive—and willing—audience in thousands of classrooms across the country equipped with Apple II computers in the 1980s. There, it helped introduce an entire generation (several, in fact) to video games.
Whatever the criteria, whether it be breakthrough gameplay, popularity and sales, pop culture penetration, critical acclaim, lasting influence, etc., Rise of the Tomb Raider has no business being on the list.so are these the best video games of all time or the most important video games of all time, because a lot of these would belong on one list but not the other
Of course a "50 Greatest Games" list by a mainstream publication, then, will look like a stuffy, established literary canon (Tetris, #1!) pockmarked by the modern (Dota 2 #49, Angry Birds #48), with no real internal logic driving the thing. Greatest on its own merits (GoldenEye 007 is #22, Perfect Dark doesn't rank, Halo: Combat Evolved is #25)? Greatest for its cultural significance and progeny? This list isn't too concerned. Here's a paragraph on each, slightly longer than a Netflix plot synopsis.
Tetris is #1, but Pong is #40. Castlevania (#39) rates, but Symphony of the Night doesn't. No Metroid game makes it. The Legend of Zelda is #7, but Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 are numbers 3 and 2, which really just feels like pandering to those dang Me Me Me millenials.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the 18th greatest video game of all Time.
OF ALL TIME.
Doom instead of Doom II? The fuck is this?
MK instead of MK2?
SMB instead of SMB 3 or SMW?
LoZ instead of LttP?
This list is clearly about influence, not quality. And even then some titles are sorely missing (i.e. putting MK on there but no SF2).
Too bad the same can't be said with Tomb Raider lol.

This is one of those "of course they choose this" lists
Most important games or something like that.
IDK I think TLOU is good and all, but it just has some good dialogue and story. Even comparing with something like ROTTR, Tomb Raider has way, way, way better gameplay and exploration elements. I dont think TLOU will be that well remembered a few years from now, maybe some people and magazines will forget about it.
This can't be serious.Only read the top 10 in the OP and none of the discussion, because there's one shining thought in my kind:
What the fuck is The Oregon Trail? How can a game I've never heard of be in a TIME magazine top 100?
Yeah, been rolling that one over in my head a few times. Its either on-point satire or a sad kind of truth. This can't be serious.

I don't know, maybe you are just young? Or you don't know about game history much? It's not the articles fault that you haven't heard of Oregon Trail, it's on you.
