I have as many pixels as necessary, since I'm looking at it in the game.
That's some Hank Hill butt.

The reaction to this is so stupid. Blizzard is allowed to design their games as they wish and also that pose is stupid as shit on any character. If you want video game ass just play SK. It's not like it is in danger of not existing.

I think when it comes to entertainment, there is a fair deal of entitlement regarding what people want to be exposed to (ironic phrase) regarding real societal conversations that are happening right now. People would rather be upset that something is being "taken away" rather than take a step back and think through why the decision may have been made given what cultural movement is marching right now.

1000 years ago, we thought draining bad blood from the body was a way to cure illness and disease. A perfectly logical assumption given what we knew scientifically at the time. Now with a bird's eye view of society (or even a first person perspective) and multiple view points, as a white man I can look at the lives of minorities or oppressed people and say "This is wrong", strive to do better, and advocate using my place of privilege.
Brilliantly put. Hopefully the next generation changes that.

What, that everyone has a butt? Or that finding offense in a butt is weird and oddly puritanical? Especially when it's not inherently sexualized?
Obviously the second part.

I agree with this. To me she doesnt really look like she is looking at her own ass, i thought she kind of was till you psoted the pic of her in the green. Now it seems like its more of just a look back (like its titled in game none the less lol)

If "behind you" means "to your left," maybe.
Without sounding too racist, I realize Hanzo is asian and his eyes are small there. But I assure you, he is in the same pose you've seen before, looking over his shoulder. My point is, his pupils don't go down directly towards his ass.

I would be fascinated to see what the response would be if instead of scaling back the sexualization of its female characters they upped the sexualization of their male characters to match it. I wouldn't be shocked if some of the people upset about this removal would be even more upset about that.

Yo like you have to be laser focused to even think she's looking at her butt. Like I don't even think the people who want the pose noticed all these "details"

Look at that one FF game with the heavily sexualized male protagonist thread to see that.

So what your saying is blizzard needs to add in the helicopter as a winning pose for the dudes. With in game sweatpants. That would cause such an uproar and it would be great.

The people finding offense in a butt have some serious issues. Everyone has a butt, you have a butt, I have a butt. It's not like the animation was her rubbing it on the screen or grabbing it or anything. Jesus.

Making the butt the focal point tells the viewer that her butt is a major part of her identity.

I think people forget we live in a real world, and that games are influential media that also exists in a real world. Art and the ideas that it conveys are extremely powerful, and it never exists in a vacuum as gamers often like to imagine. When a girl plays as a character, and she's told at the end of the match, "your identity is butt," that affects her. Identity is monumentally important to most humans, and you have no right to tell her that she shouldn't feel affected by it.

I don't mean to sound all huffy, it's just irritating that people act like the human psyche isn't affected by subtlety, when in reality it's affected by subtlety more than anything. Being dismissive of this sort of thing benefits no one.

If the devs want to remove it then fine. But this shouldn't have even been an issue in the first place. It's an optional unlockable pose. Just don't use it.

Can we please remove this pose? It's really putting me down

c'mon, not enough. she's like watching something distant on the ground (actually she's staring at the camera, whatever)

No, she isn't. She's staring below the camera's eyeline. Mercy, Hanzo, Mccree, they're staring at the camera. Even Widow is staring at the camera. Tracer is drawing sight straight down to that ass. I've got like 700 games of Overwatch played, I've seen these poses a LOT.

Yes, she is. Looking behind you looks like this.

She's either looking at her ass or my crotch. Take your pick, both amount to the same thing.

I don't think you know what direction 'down' is.

Pay attention to the white highlight in her eyes. The pupil is usually right next to the highlight, which is near the top left of the pupil's corner. By that notion, she can't actually be staring at her ass in that shot, and in fact is looking ahead at head elevation.

I think you and others are reading entirely too much into a pose. Not everything is a subliminal message, and sometimes a butt is just a butt and not some sort of message about self worth.

So, when you look around, like, in real life, you can see more than just butt. That guy is staring behind him, but then, there's so much more to see than just where he's looking! If he were to look a little more to the side, say... where Tracer is looking -- it's possible that he could still be looking at something besides his butt.

I verified this myself. Despite my impeccably-shaped man buns that I can barely keep my own eyes off of, it was possible to turn my head to different angles and not look at my butt.

I don't see how anyone can see the original post as well-reasoned criticism. It's literally just "this character is positive things, and I don't understand how a character in a cutesy pose could fit in with that." It's madonna/whore complex stuff, basically going "a good character can't do anything attractive" and people going "yeah, yeah, that makes sense." That's what's annoying me. It's shit critique. That doesn't mean it's invalid feelings that the person is experiencing, but it's certainly not a well-made point by any means. It's just someone going "I can't accept good characters who might wanna appear attractive." It annoys me that anyone would change their work based on their community because that's ultimately how I am in regards to my own work. So I hate seeing it done. Consider it a personal hangup.

Sorry, I see I posted before you edited in your full argument.

I just don't see this as a situation where "Tracer is good therefore she can't be sexy." That's not how I read the post at all.

It's not shit critique because they backed it up. They said, look, here's how you establish this character, and then you sexualize the character, which is the unfair and totally lame default thing the game industry does with any female character they create.

That's a perfectly valid complaint and I hope more people start making it.

I would hate to play a game that ignored community feedback. I know criticism for my work comes in all forms, sometimes in ways I may not agree with. But everything is a discussion. I'm not watered down by changing my work.

do people not understand how eyes work? if she was trying to look at her ass, they'd be back further. there wouldn't be white in the corners. she's looking in the same general direction that he face is pointed.

She's not looking 'to the side' she's looking down.

You guys are still trying to rules lawyer this shit: Obviously she cannot specifically SEE her own ass in center view, but she's stretching her eyes that way damn hard. In artistic terms, she is pulling you, the viewer, in to look at where her eyes are looking - her ass. She's sticking out the thing she wants your attention drawn to - her ass. Her arms and legs are in a pose that frames the central image of her stance - her ass. Literally everything about that pose is centered on her ass. She's not standing looking over her shoulder like some kind of badass, like Hanzo, Mccree, or even Mercy, she's looking over her shoulder trying to get you to look at her ass.

I don't have the context of what this character is supposed to be like, or how it fits with the rest of the game, but generally speaking, I wouldn't have minded if this pose was kept in, as to my eyes it looks like what Blizzard presumably intended to evoke. Just reminds me of Bayonetta, a character that's arguably strong and heroic. But I also don't mind if it's not kept in if others do mind it. It's just a butt pose after all. Doesn't make the game any worse for me, but possibly makes it better for others. Go for it.

Ultimately it's Blizzards call, and based on the short statement in the OP, it seems their intent with the butt pose differed from how some interpreted it, and so Blizzard changed it to better suit their creative vision.

There is no problem here. It's pretty dumb and sad how there always seems to be this overreaction to the commonplace news of a developer changing or removing something based on feedback, when that something is butts or tits.

I know some are joking, but the cover isn't comparable to the pose where the pose has the butt much more pronounced.

I just find it hilarious that some gamers are claiming this is a huge act of censorship or something. It should go without saying that a team willfully opting to change their own creative work isn't censorship.

But what's odd is that this is such a big story to begin with. Blizzard is trying to make a universe with enough creative material to last 100+ years. Think like Marvel.

And yet, their basis really doesn't have that much world building. Each character only has a few dozen material voice lines, a few dozen animations, 4-5 models, etc. As a result, every single asset matters.

Blizzard is putting immense thought into every single decision. No decision is being based on a whim or agenda.

Heaven forbid they make changes to their first game in a new IP during closed beta...

Take a picture of yourself looking at your butt, with the camera on a level with your face. You will tilt your head WAY down, and your eyes will appear to be practically closed. Tracer is looking just below the horizon. SHE AIN'T EYEIN UP HER OWN BUTT.
