UK: Porn sites face block under "enhanced age controls"

Via The Guardian:

Pornography websites that fail to implement stringent age verification controls could be blocked from British users after MPs forced the government to strengthen planned measures to prevent children accessing such content.

[...]

The rules, to be enforced by the British Board of Film Classification, will apply to all websites regardless of where they are based. The government says they comply with EU country of origin rules.

Digital rights campaigners, however, say the measure has no equivalent in any other democratic country, while free speech advocates say it could be the start of a slippery slope towards ever greater censorship.

Together with the online surveillance powers introduced by the Investigatory Powers Act this week, it constitutes a significant tightening of control over the internet.

Honestly speaking I'd almost rather they went with the original plan of making everyone register if they wanted to view porn.

I think these proposed rules are stupid and unenforceable, what's your take?

Should go the route of purity like South Korea and block access to all of the filth.

I'd rather the approach be websites asking you to fill in your DoB or something to the almost Orwellian like "please call this number to opt in! and let us shame you at the same time".

The UK government in general seems to have a hard on for the internet, censorship and control. Not only do they go about forcing ISPs to ban websites (trying to wage war on torrent sites), the new bill passed to allow mass surveillance IS Orwellian in nature itself.

At the same time as they scramble around porn, they do very little to try and get schools doing sex education far better than they are.

lol. If they actually think they can stop horny children from watching porn they are truly deluded.

This will just cause inconvience to people and won't achieve its goals. Also I don't even think those goals are particularly worthy. Kids should be taught that porn isn't representative of real life in basically any way in school but I honestly don't think they should be banned by the government from watching it. Parents can decide how to attempt (and almost certainly fail) to control content in their own homes.

How?

A long legal document that you have to tick to say you've read?

Don't see any way they can truly verify your age other than linking to official ID.

Hey guys, remember 6 years ago when the coalition came in and rolled back all those new Labour laws against civil liberties? Well, now Theresa May is PM.

I mean shit like this is just to make it seem as if they are doing something without really doing anything

The devil will find things for idle hands to do, I expect an increase of vandalism if banging the budgie is off the menu.

I've been clicking the "Yes I'm over 18" button since I was like 13.
If such a flawless system as that can be trumped by simply lying about it, what hope do we have?!

Yep, basically. Urgh, still better than Leadsom or Fox or whatever. I really hate the state of UK Politics at the moment.

Why does our government continue to force down our throat solutions to problems we don't have?
How about solving some issues that will actually have real world benefits for a change.

I don't believe you can even actually pay for internet in any form without being 18, so existing ISP measures to ban this sick filth already work.

Good to know we all paid for MPs to watch a shitload of porn in their 'fact finding' junkets though.

RIP net neutrality

This is the beginning of the end. Trump's gonna kill it too.

On the one hand it's very easy for a young mind to be exposed to things he or she just should not see, so I understand the need to feel obligated to protect them.

On the other hand tons of things that we enjoy online which have nothing to do with porn are going to get shut down due to overreach in the name of "thinking of the children."

The future sucks!

They tried to censor the internet in Germany like 6-7 years ago also with the pretense of banning child porn websites.... Then somehow they also thought it would be wise to ban right-wing websites...

The list of websites that were supposed to be banned leaked inlcuding stuff like Brazzers and the majority of websites were just "normal" websites.

It didnt go through though, thank god.

Why should people have to register to watch porn?

*Edit: Do you mean register with the porn sites or their net provider?

Didnt they just force internet providers to block them unless you turn it off in the router settings?

It's an ISP level of controls that you go to a webpage to opt-out.

With regards to this new proposal, I don't see how it gets effectively implemented.

This is daft
introduce a pin for mature content at the provider level and leave it at that

though even why that would be necessary baffles me

If I can't get my porn I'll just go out and make my own.

This assumes porn is only distributed via porn sites. What about the stuff on forums? And user-generated porn via "sexting" (which seems to be quite popular among young people)?

Basically do that already. You have to opt in to be able to watch mature content.

They are already thinking too much about them.

Quite. THE party of historic child abuse being the champion of protection in regards to pornography is a joke. Especially in light of the news this week about a survivors group losing total faith in an independent enquiry into similar matters.
