Video Game/Movie adaptations you enjoy.

I was inspired to make this thread from the Metal Gear topic.

I know it's common to take dumps on VG movie adaptations, but I disagree that every one of them is bad and I know a lot of people like me who could point to a couple films based off of video games that they enjoy. If you have any you like, share in this topic! I'm curious to see what your favorites are.

For me:

Max Payne
Hitman (2008)
Need for Speed
Street Fighter
Resident Evil: Extinction
Tekken
Far Cry (Yeah I liked it sue me)
Rampage

So if you like any, what are they?

Mortal Kombat (1995). That is the only good one I can think of now. I have always liked it:

Max Payne was ok but they should have used the bullet time more.

I don't think I've ever watched the entire thing, but there's something I like about The Spirits Within. I've fallen asleep twice while watching it, but I don't see that necessarily as a bad thing. I like the vibe of it. Pretty atmospheric.

I didn't completely hate Silent Hill (2006). Movie is kind of a slog and really falls apart at the end but the visuals kept me into it. That Bob Fosse inspired nurse sequence was pretty fucking cool. Seeing Pyramid Head come to life was also a nice treat (dat skinning scene).

Mortal Kombat is the only one I legitimately like. Spirits Within would probably be right behind. Prince of Persia was ok but nothing to write home about. Street Fighter obviously has its moments but it's still terrible.

Everything else is a garbage fire.

yeah the original Mortal Kombat movie was pretty good. On a side note Robin Shou (the guy who plays Liu Kang) is 58 years old now, he looks like he's in his mid 30's.

yeah, it would definitely be the OG Mortal Combat and the first Resident Evil for me. these 2 did the best in making something close to the original game and still being a fun/decent movie. the new Rampage is pretty fun too, but not really something that will remind you of the original game that much.

I love the Dead or Alive adaption

Yes, it's goofy, but so is the source material.

The Need for Speed movie was surprisingly cute

I loved the Mortal Kombat TV series. It was surprisingly Machiavellian with a lot of plot twists.

I swear to God, when I saw the trailer poster for DoA I thought it was a Porn Parody.
The action in that movie is surprisingly well choreographed.

I agree, the fact that they nailed the atmosphere perfectly is what kept you sucked in.

House of the Dead - Uwe Boll is a master craftsman, building tension and staying faithful to the source material. The number of times things jump out at you and your just not emotionally ready for it are plentiful. It gives the adrenaline rush of the game.

I never got tired of seeing Resident Evil either.

Silent Hill is a film that I love, despite its many flaws. It felt like it was a love letter to the franchise, even if it didn't completely make sense. The effects and design was amazing.

The new Tomb Raider was alright. I like the Resident Evil movies too, even though they are terrible.

I'm gonna include the new Jumanji and just declare that the winner on a technicality. I enjoyed that more than anything listed so far.

Silent Hill and Mortal Kombat (first one) were the only two I'd say I actually enjoyed. The Resident Evil movies were fine but they were so loosely based on the games that it might as well have been a totally new IP. Didn't see Rampage yet, so I'll hold the jury on that one.

The old tomb raider Jolie as adrenaline Junkie was a lot of fun. Have not seen a better video game movie yet

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is my personal favorite. It's weird, and a little verbose, but man, the feels...

I can respect your opinion about that film, but in a lot of ways it ruined FFVII's characters and world for me. Instead of the quirky bunch we got from the game, the movie made them all into a bunch of super serious lanky androgynous mood killers.

I guess, but it just resonated with me. I'm a moody bitch by nature, so it was right in my wheelhouse. :)

Definitely this. It was cool the first time I watched it, but definitely completely shits itself at the end...

Otherwise the only other halfway decent video game movie is Mortal Kombat...

His adaptation of Far Cry was actually really good! I liked his casting of Til Schweiger

I enjoyed most of them even when I thought they were really bad. The worst for me was DOA and Tekken. Doa was just weak in my opinion and for Tekken I just don't know what they were thinking when they made that movie. I even liked the super mario bros and the double dragon movies.

Fatal Fury anime

i mean, surely wasn't great but i enjoyed it as a kid and think it's a bit underrated. the first OVA was pretty good, the second was admittedly garbage but the The Motion Picture was pretty epic at the time. too bad it never really took off and left some plot threads hanging

I think you need to replay the game. I think there's like, 2? party members without tragic backstories. One of the game's main themes is loss, and the story reads a lot different when you replay it as an adult.

On topic: The Street Fighter movie was absolute perfection. Art at its finest. A lesson to every other film on how its meant to be done.

Warcraft was decent enough and I'd be interested in a sequel that takes place in Warcraft 2.

How could you choose Fatal Fury The Motion Picture over Street Fighter II The Animated Movie? 0o
