Walmart in-store Wii U preorders begin 10/14

I think there is a chance. Pre-orders opened on the 14th, and I went on the 17th and got one rather painlessly. Unlike with online pre-orders, I think each store has their own stock to sell. If one store doesn't have it available, just try another one.

This is my first time doing Layaway, so I'm no expert on it, but I was charged about forty dollars.

Just give her 50 bucks and you'll be good

If local sales tax were 10% (wild guess):

$350 * 0.10 (10% down) * 1.10 (10% sales tax) + $5.00 (refundable fee) = $43.50

So, like Misterhbk said, $50 is a good round amount that's sure to cover it. Sales tax could be higher than 10% so give her $50 to be sure.

Thank you, I appreciate the quick response! I am very excited about this console and believe it or not one of the reasons why I want the deluxe bundle is because of the stand to hold it vertically... (small details in life that make you a happier person I guess) and NintendoLand.

The procedure here in Canada (at least for me) is $50 down payment at the electronics department. Small town walmart with no layaway section. They don't take your name down, but you need to bring your receipt and preorder card to pick up the system. I'm not sure if they "hold" a system for you, and if so for how long. I'll be there launch day morning, but it would be reassuring to know they hold your system in case of unforeseen circumstances.

I was the first to preorder. The had preorder cards for the reg and deluxe, as well as for the games nsmbu, and nintendoland.

Target now has preorder cards. It's only a $1 and you get a $5 dollar gift card if you purchase the system with them. I'm a little leery as to how they'll hold them and they only scanned the UPC during checkout not the unique number on the back of the card but whatever.

Hmm. The only way that would work is if they gave them only enough cards for that store's allocation and then maybe customized the UPC for each store. But that sure would be a stupid way to go about it I'd think.

I've worked in target electronics, we hold all preorder cards worth of stock for a week.

I'm pretty sure they hold the system for you or else there would be no point in preordering.

Nothing says marketing fuck up like "all-new console". Did they really have to name it Wii AND make it look 95% the same?

Wait this is a new console? Goddamn it I thought it was just a new controller for my WII. preorder canceled! j/k

Seriously though I do agree that was kind of stupid. I really do think that doing that is going to hurt them with the casual crowds who don't follow gaming as much as we all do. I can already see the soccer mom's arguing with their kids about buying another WII. At the same time I can see many kids getting bought regular Wii's by parents thinking it's the same thing as a WII U. Then don't even get me started on the games and the screw ups that will happen there.

But what about the DS and 3DS? Those look the same to someone who doesn't know and yet both have been successful (though 3DS didn't start that way). Seems to me like it would have similar problems as what you describe but I've never really heard of that happening. Both systems and games are actively sold still, side by side too.

Oh I'm not saying it won't be successful. I have no doubt it will be. Also the 3DS had a rough go at the start due to price and people being confused about it being a new handheld and not just another DS. So I can see that happening again. Course I do think that Nintendo will overcome that just like they have with the 3DS.

I juat noticed this thread now and I'm worried. This time around I cannot just walk into walmart and buy wii u deluxe can I? Am I already dead?

Nobody knows for sure if you can or not but probably not right away. Also you may not be dead yet. Since this is new for Wal Mart some stores have been very slow to get this rolling and those that have it's been a slow build up. It just depends on the store you go to.

Hm thanks for your thoughts. Ill see if there is hope fpr me tommorow.

My friends went in a couple of days ago and said they had no problem getting their orders in.

You have a good chance mostly because this wasn't really heavily advertised and, like others have said, not many people think about Wal-Mart when it comes to pre-ordering.

I've seen Nintendo point cards on shelves that have both the Wii U and 3DS pictured on them already, so yes.

Wait a sec. So they are staying with points cards? I was sure I saw $ cards pictured in a thread somewhere, so I though they were switching to those. Something like $35, $50, $75 amounts.

I still have 600 "Wii" points left, hopefully they transfer over to the new system just like our wiiware/vc content will. Anyone that did a ds to 3ds, or 3ds to 3ds transfer have any issues with their points balance transfer?

Nothing says marketing fuck up like "all-new console". Did they really have to name it PS3 AND make it look 95% the same?

Lol wut

The PS3 looks nothing whatsoever like the PS2. Besides, it's very clear for the name that the PS3 is a newer console generation than the PS2.

Meanwhile, the Wii U doesn't exactly scream brand new generation. It also doesn't help that the U on the Wii U logo can easily be mistaken for a blue square symbol rather than a letter that's a part of the device's name.

As I previusly stated, I am not in the states right now. My girlfriend is though and she went to a Walmart yesterday, she misunderstood me and went to the electronics section of the store and said the dude helping her was a dick and just said the Wii U is not available until the 18th.

She didn't go to the Layaway department though, she will be there today again and try there. You think she still has a chance and the guy at electronics didn't know shit or was just being a dick? Anyone here with a similar situation?

my guy at the electronics pointed me to Layaway because I asked about Layaway. If that word did not come out of my mouth I would get the same treatment

Without knowing the person, just basing this on Walmart, I'm gonna have to go with a combination of being a dick AND not knowing shit.

Jesus, with tax it was about $380. That makes sense but I didn't even think of tax before. Oh man if only Amazon opened up preorders before the California tax law. Oh well.

Someone at Nintendo or Walmart obviously thought the image and name was not clear enough. They thought it needed all-new console.

I work at Walmart (Canada also), although not the electronics section lol. My understanding is this card pretty much reserves your Wii U guaranteed since there are a limited amount of pre order cards I saw on the shelves. I should double check and ask though and see what they say

Doesn't matter, all the things I pre-ordered before the tax law are now shipping with the tax added on :(

Its funny how people say they can get confused and think the Wii U is a new accessary. The gamepad isnt being sold alone you know.

You'd be surprised how many people ask such questions in general when it comes to video games. True life question asked when working for GameStop; "Why doesn't my Xbox play Xbox 360 games?", "Is the PS3 the same as a PS2?", "I don't understand why PS3 games don't work on my PS2. They just say the graphics are better to sell you a new console when they aren't any different than the PS2 graphics."

I'm about to sell my OG 3DS for 100$ (got a XL last week), so I'll just need 200$ to fully pay my Wii U, and that money is coming in this week. NSMBU, ZombiU and Darksiders II and all fully paid. I'll just get a 20$ eShop card and Black Ops 2 maybe. And a Pro Controller.

This gun be a good week.

Yup. People really are stupid. I used to work electronics at the Wal Mart here back in the days and dear god at least once a day I was shocked at how stupid some people were. I'm not even just talking customers. I'm talking co-workers too who helped customers. I swear to god one co-worker was looking for the playstation version of Mario 64 for a good 10 mins once till I told them that no Mario isn't on the PS. The customer and the co-worker of course told me that I was wrong and that they should probably go to Gamestop because we appear to be all out. That's just one story too. I could tell story upon story about the stupidity of people.

They would of charged tax when your order shipped if the item was released after the tax law went into effect anyways. I preordered two games before it went to effect, paid it off via store credit. Check the status later, and tax was added, so my card will be charged to cover it.

As dumb as it sounds, tax on orders before the law went into effect only apply if the item's price changed, I had like 4 pre-orders before it and didn't get any extra charge.

I remember one Gaffer pointing out that one of his/her preorders got a lowered price, but just by $0.10, and that was enough for them to charge tax.

Went to a local Target this morning and picked up a reserve card for the Deluxe Set. It also rang up as $1 despite saying that it was a $5 reserve card, and the clerk ringing me up said specifically to come on release day because they "aren't like Gamestop and DON'T hold things in the back" (which seems ridiculous to me).

Gonna use it as a fallback if the Walmart thing doesn't end up panning out somehow.

I assume since I haven't heard any differently that Walmarts are still taking preorders?

It goes through November 1st but most stores will reach their limit before then.

I walked into my Wal-Mart this past Monday and pre ordered with no problems (Houston, TX). You have to go to the lay away section - I asked the people in Electronics and they told me I'd have to wait until 11/18/12, but walked over to lay away and they knew exactly what to do.
