Walmart in-store Wii U preorders begin 10/14

Cali Gaffers, I'm about to be free and go to the nearest Walmart, are stores already running out of pre-orders or were we the only ones who got notified about this? :lol

I work at Walmart, get 40 hours a week an get $12.60/hr and I'm not even a manger. Your argument is invalid

I still think the managers should be up to date on the information and to tell the employees. Just think of the people who dont go on gaf or whatever and was told you see the paper? Come back on the 18th.

again, I think some people are overestimating the demand for Wii-U, cuz a lot of people still don't even know that it exists or what it is

I know Nintendo hasn't started marketing it, even though it comes out in a month, but it looks like "Wii" in the name "Wii U" may be backfiring. They should've dropped Wii completely to help extinguish confusion. People not in the know think it's a Wii accessory.

I've had a few encounters with casuals that didn't know what the Wii U was. Some were like "wtf" when seeing it for the first time and not in a good way.

Nintendo's got some educating to do.

Just like some people thought the 3DS was just another DS revision.

Yeah, I think I might have said this earlier in this thread but one of the other employees that was standing around while the assistant manager helped me thought that the Wii U was a "PSP version of the Wii that you could carry around all over, like a handheld". So there definitely is a lot of room for improvement in educating the public that this is a NEW CONSOLE.

I'm not really sure what the significance of anything between these two bolded statements was...Marketing = educating. If they haven't started only gamers will know...

I have a terrible feeling the commercials will suck and not educate anything about distinguishing between wii and wii-u, if anything they will somehow make it seem MORE like they are the same thing when they keep flashing Wiimotes and nunchucks with the new Wii-U system

I'm not sure if this is as a result of the total lack of marketing, or an inherent design paradigm Nintendo is going to face with the Wii U. They want the Wiimotes to still function, the system looks pretty darn similar, and they left the Wii name intact.

All poor choices, imo. To Ebay my consoles go! :p

They've got a long road ahead of them explaining to the public why they should buy a Wii U when they already have a Wii. However, first they have to somehow inform them it's an entirely new system and not an accessory for their Wii. They announced the Wii U at E3 in 2011, and the public is still confused and ignorant to the fact it's the Wii's successor.

wow, a lot of you guys are getting multiple pre-orders.
are you all going to flip some console or just buying for friends/family?

Walked in to mine at 1pm (PST) and was still the first person to ask about it at this particular Walmart superstore (95605). They were given an allotment of 20 units, from what the person at the layaway counter told me. Already had the sheet and everything.

$42 down. Now I have one here and one at Best Buy. If I'm cancelling one, it'll be the Best Buy pre-order, because I don't want to lose $5 lol.

All these people are fucking idiots. I've got six people running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Anything I can have these people reference to pull their heads out of their collective asses? And the circular means nothing to them.

Tell them to type in the UPC :

Wii U Deluxe Console
UPC 45496880866
$349.96

At least I think that is the correct UPC, it's the one that is in the post on CAG. For my layaway the barcode scanner wouldn't work on the paper they had so they just typed in the UPC and it popped up as a Wii U deluxe model. Hopefully it gets sorted out.

They tried typing that when I was with them and got invalid UPC code.

Have them try004549688086.

That's what my current receipt has written on it.

That's not how invalidations work. Do an informal survey of your co-workers and see if you're the rule, or the exception.

Not to turn this into a "What does Wal Mart pay" thread, but I can't pre-order a Wii U at this time. When I worked at Wal-Mart 3 years ago the base minimum pay at the store was $8.50. I got $0.50 for shift differential and $0.50 because I had worked at Blockbuster for 6 months years before. After 90 days I was told they used to give up to $0.50 pay raise based on performance but that had stopped due to the recession. I was a great worker so I would have gotten it (really nice to know that btw). I also had the option of benefits after 90 days. You are stuck at 32 hours a week for 6 or 12 months, I don't recall exactly.

Anyone with more time there would be making over $10 easily, but then in my experience those were often the really incompetent employees everyone would be complaining about.

To be completely honest I preordered mine with the sole intention of flipping it on Ebay/Craigslist, but more likely than not when the day comes I won't be able to resist keeping it for myself.

Yes, this sounds more reasonable. My receipt has that same UPC code written on it (004549688086). Try having them type that number in instead.

Went to Wal-Mart at 12:01 in the morning - no one there knew what a Wii U was. Arrived a few hours later again when Layaway opened and still they were very confused even though they were literally unpacking Wii U fliers for the games section. Was eventually able to put a console on layaway but does that mean I have a console waiting for me on November 18 or will I still have to wait in line? I'm asking for me but also for Wal-Mart as well.

From what I can gather they should have printed a label that will be put on your Wii U when it's delivered to the store and will never be put on the store floor. When it comes to picking it up they'll have someone there at midnight. When picking up the console there might be a line depending on how many people preordered, but it should move pretty quickly and you won't have to wait in line for hours only minutes.

I don't think we can make any assumptions concerning Wii U sales until we see Nintendo's ad campaign. If they put out some killer TV spots that drop children's jaws, parents are going to flock to whatever it is, no matter what it's called.

The reason we aren't seeing that many preorders via layaway at wal-mart yet is because it was poorly advertised. I wouldn't have known about it if GAF didn't tell me. (Thank you GAF.)

Given the low turnout for people getting the Wii U if some of you still want to try this some things to do:

  • Call several stores around you and ask if they're doing them. Layaway should be in charge of this.
  • If they've already done it you should have no problem.
  • When you arrive at the store point out politely that it's on the front page to layaway today. Find a manager.
  • Explain they should have gotten an e-mail memo with the bar code and UPC 004549688086 and instructions.
  • If they look terribly perplexed and say they have no idea what you're talking about, call ANOTHER store even if it's far as all hell away that you know is doing the layaway and have someone in the store you're in talk to them.

Went to Walmart today at 2pm and put one on layaway. Surprisingly, I was the first one.

Now I can cancel my Best Buy preorder at least.

Don't use the circular. Use the memo. Print it out and have them scan the bar code, their system will walk them through the rest.

Also I think part of the reason we aren't seeing too many layaways at Walmart is because it is at Walmart. Don't get me wrong I am not saying anything bad towards Walmart, but in the past Walmart hasn't really been a place where preorders exist (atleast in my area). I was planning on waiting out the night before for the WiiU, if it wasn't for Gaf I never would have known that you could preorder them.

For those shocked about low turn outs at walmart for this, Walmart is not a normal place for preorders, how often have you seen them do this before? Gamestop, best buy, etc. sold out fast because its a known thing.
