What are your biggest gaming hardware mispurchases

Nintendo Switch

Rarely play it, not many games that interest me. I've had it for 4 years and I've only played:

Zelda BotW
Fire Emblem 3H
Mario + Rabbids
Ring Fit Adventure
Mario Odyssey (insanely overrated)

Currently: happily running a 5700 XT + R5 3600 + 32 GB VRAM + X570 board.

I'd say I made a poor choice in 2011 getting a 560 Ti 1 GB instead of paying a sliver more for a HD 6950 2 GB. The bigger buffer would've helped me more in the long run.

My first GPU: An ATI X600 Pro 128 MB, in summer 2005. This was a rebadged 9600 XT, that came out in 2003. So yeah, I bought an almosg 2 year, 2 uArches old GPU, when GeForce 7 and ATI X1000 was around the corner. But it was a PC sold by a Store, bought by my mom. I do believe she did her best. That GPU never gave me problems (Portal 1 aside that never worked pirated in it, lol).

PS5 most recently. Had it for about 9 months now and have turned it on maybe 15 times total and mostly just to see how cool my PS4 games run on it.

Back around 1998 or so I bought the N64 expansion pack and the Rogue Squadron game that was one of the first games to take advantage of it. I played it once, and while it was maybe $120 total for the pack and game, I was broke as hell at the time.

Quest 2. This is all on me. I have loved every second I have used it, but I just let it sit there and collect dust. When I want to play it, it needs charging, then I lose interest for weeks to the point it needs charging, rinse, repeat.

Quite a few.., but here's one good example; H3D glasses ~2006.

These are 3D glasses, well before the 3DTV fad. Quake was the big focal point here, promised a lot. But the experience.. Just look at those tiny tinted LCD squares, yeah.. Small, and made the image super-dark. Uncomfortable to wear.. Also affected resolution and performance.

And of course Kinect as already mentioned.. Although to be fair me and my wife had a lot of fun with it - the first week or so..

Xbox Series X

I switched from main PS4 to Xbox One X last gen for the better graphics and controller, and played a lot of multiplayer with the lads but we all kind of changed gear when the next gen came out and I never used it for multiplayer at all. Only exclusive I have played tbh has been Halo Infinite but I should have just got the PC version instead. Also got a PS5 for the exclusives which tbh I still haven't used a huge amount but would have been a better day 1 purchase instead of the Series X.

I now also own a 4080 as my 2070 was getting a bit long in the tooth. Was limited to one console as a kid and always felt like I missed out but now I've got off the other end and spend way too much on games and hardware that I don't have time to play!

Not that i didn't want it mind you. I just found out to late that its only compatible with the 1000 model (had a 3000 and bought it second hand, so couldn't return it).

Probably the original GBA.
The screen was impossible to see unless you were in sunlight.

During my recent years retro revival of all my consoles - I found a GBA sp backlit version in my travels. That thing is a beaut.

Game Cube.
It's true, it's still basically mint in box. My OG Xbox saw a lot action and I worked two PS2s to death.

Xbox Series X. I pre-ordered one from Amazon when it first came out, but when I got it I realized how redundant it was with my gaming PC and ended up returning it.

Generally every Xbox except the 360.
I buy em every generation so I can play "exclusives". They mostly collect dust.

Runner up is my Switch. Its basically an ornament- i cant get into it. I played my Wii U more- really i just miss a new Mario Kart.

The Atari Jaguar. I fell for the we arly egm hype. Getting games was a total pain. I think I would have enjoyed a 3do more

Also my PS3 that sounds like a vacuum 20 sec after turning it on. I barely used it.

N64 in the first 1.5 years. It literally had no games after Mario for way too long

A Madcatz stick for Ps3 for use playing Sf4.
Buttons lagged, then eventually stopped working all together.
Their peripherals are absolute dog shit.
I remember their race wheels for psone back when I worked at Gamestation. We got so many returns it was unreal.

The Amiga 1200. We had an Amiga 500 which was used quite a bit but then we upgraded to the A1200 at early 1993 or something. I was kind of shocked as it was such a marginal improvement. I think after about 6 months we stopped using it for games and it collected dust. My brother was hell bent on upgrading, but I think he regret it too as he kind of discarded it even before I did.

The Jaguar was another dud. But at least I bought it from a firesale. I found it so fucking bad though, that I returned it. I had no space for it and I just regret spending cash on it.

Best Road Rash version for sure!

It has many good games.

Commodore did absolutely nothing to get developers to take advantage of what minor hardware upgrade there was either. Same with CD. Killed the one niche it had and killed the brand.

Xbox One (S, sans Kinect) feels like the only one I could have comfortably missed out on and I never regretted my purchase of it.

So none, really.

Glad I never bought a Vita though.

Meta Quest 2. I bought it shortly before they raised the price on it. I now have zero interest in anything VR related.

I got one when Resi 4 came out and it made my jaw drop but it feels like such a faff to actually set it up and play it so I haven't really used it since.

Spent most of the time fucking around with PC mods and played Alyx for maybe 2 hours but it's such a hassle.

I bought an Elite controller when they first came out. The right bumper stopped working within 6 months. I got version 2 as part of a Taco Bell promotion with a One X. Apparently there is adhesive that they put under the B button which made it stick every so often, then the right trigger switch would slide making the right trigger not work properly.
I have never had issues with a standard controller that came with my consoles so I just stick with those.

Feel the same so far not played it alot GT7 etc is good but not had time to play it
If it wasn't so expensive I'd prob feel different and it'll be something else. I haven't touched it either that much. To many good game releases take up most of my time.

The PC is loud as fuck, granted I have a small form factor case with a 4090 in it so I’m cramming a lot in there but the fans are loud to the point of distraction under load, think PS4 levels.
use fan curves.
generally speaking, non-RGB fans outperform RGB fans (move more air and are quieter).
go 140mm or higher if you can -- you want high CFM (70+) and low db (25 or less); for radiator/heatstink, pay attention to fan's static pressure.
put rubber washers between fans and mounting points (like case chassis) to reduce vibration/noise (cheap, and can make significant impact).
if using radiators, put electrical tape around where fan meets radiator, so air is forced to go through radiator and doesnt spill out the sides (improves cooling performance).
ensure airflow is properly routed (intake from front and bottom; exhaust from back and top).

Ouya. I was one of the Kickstarter backers, and have a bronze "founders edition" with a spare controller.

In fairness it was the first reliable PS1 emulator I got hooked up to the TV that gave a semi decent experience, I played FF7 through on it with no issues.

But yeah, fucking hell.

I bought one at GameStop for $99 and it was a great little emulator and media streaming box at the time. Putting Plex and Netflix on it was great. I sold it like a year later for around what I paid for it because people were buying them for Android development or whatever.

I used it more than the wiiu I bought at launch.

A lot of retro-consoles and two CRTs within the last two years. It was necessary to get the nostalgia itch out of the way but then I realized that real hardware was more pain than was worth it to me. At least I got it out of my system.

Nothing too expensive but the reality glove controller for n64. Asked for it for Christmas and was picturing me going full minority report playing ocarina of time. Was absolute dog shit.

Getting a 3090 when I had a chance to get a 3080 both at msrp. Imagine paying double price and only getting up 10% better performance cause your dumbass had to have the best gpu. Couldn't be me. The 3090's only saving grace is that it has a lot of vram.

I guess handhelds that I bought: Vita, DS and Switch.

Yes I played some games on them, often brought them with me on trips but rarely got them out of their cases.

In the end I just don’t like playing on these devices. Small screens, small buttons, looking down at them. Meh.

Haha, I did a lot of research and a lot of smarter people than me rightfully predicted that Blu-ray will prevail so I went with it.

I remember a lot of arguments were about porn. I might be mistaken, but I vaguely remember something about porn being released on HD DVD and not Blu-ray so a lot of people thought HD DVD will win.

I almost wrote what you wrote, because that's what I remembered, too. In the end, "streaming" was the hidden third contender in the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray fight. So, once again, porn won the format war.

Somewhat recently Oculus Quest 1. Not because it was bad. They just pushed out the Quest 2 almost immediately after you could find one in stock with a newer lower price and then stopped supporting it.

Other things Power Glove. Absolutely pointless wanted it so bad when I first seen it. Was part of my Xmas gifts and I never really was able to use it. Also the launch Nintendo DS as it was so dim you couldn't see it.

It will be dual sense edge, purely based on its price. We now have to pay controller tax on owning a console :S. I have 2 dualsense both drift.

A Diamond Viper II AGP GPU card.

Boy what a mistake that was. I got it after a very positive review from a PC gaming magazine -- as it turns out that dolt just churned out a cookie cutter review or promo release material and most likely not even installed the thing to test it.

Virtually no games, certainly not high profile ones, or ones I was interested in, supported it and its innovative chip (S3 Savage2000) or whatever. It had issues on Windows 2k, white or missing textures in games, inexcusably sluggish performance. They tried to release drivers with fixes, and the situation improved to a level of meeting the bare minimum acceptable requirement to call this thing a GPU for desktop apps purposes.

It's probably still somewhere in my parents house, rotting inside an unused PC case.

Probably PSVR2. Not that I didn't enjoy the whole 3 games that I played on it (that I had any interest in) but I'm beginning to feel like I've been a little too hasty to shell out 5 hondos on that thing because if there won't be any worthwhile games on it and it'll end up as another failed experiment by Sony, then it's only gonna collect dust.
