Given that its my favorite genre I have been playing this genre since the late 90s when I first got a PC.

Mines are:

What about you guys?

1. Skyrim
2. FFXII
3. FFT
4. Vagrant Story
5. Planescape: Torment

(note, I am including RPGs of any flavor).

edit: It's worth noting that this will probably get closed, as list threads are discouraged.

1. Final Fantasy IX

Game was a major influence on my life and what lead me to become a gamer, so I wouldn't be here right now without it.

2. Final Fantasy IV

3. Earthbound

4. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (But I do need to play VIII again to see which one is better.)

5. Kingdom Hearts

Wow, almost all of mine were Square. I need to play more shit. I have like 0 experience with WRPGs.

Other ones:
Pokemon Blaze Black 2
Final Fantasy VIII
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy XII
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Threads of Fate
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
Dragon's Crown
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

I'll probably get shat on lol but why not(not in order that would take much longer)

1.Ff8
2.Tales of vesperia
3.Suikoden 3
4Kh2fm
5.Dark cloud 2

1. Morrowind
2. Dark Souls 1
3. Dark Souls 2
4. Dark Souls 3
5. Dragons Dogma

No game will ever capture me like Morrowind again. I felt like I became part of that world and the nostalgia still washes over me everytime I see or hear anything about it. Dark souls is beautiful and has my favorite gameplay from pretty much any series. Two if very close to one but one was my first so it holds that special spot. Dragons Dogma is a distant fifth only because I haven't put too much time into it but thus far it seems special. Nothing else comes close. Not a big jrpg or turn based battle fan. Every Bethesda game after Morrowind has been more disappointing than the one before. Have not played the Witcher series. KoTOR, fable ff are all great games but I never felt the desire of playing through them more than once.

I really didn't mind ff8 except for the draw system. That's my most hated part. But FF8 had amazing soundtrack IMO. As good vii, vi or x.

I smell list thread.

1. Fallout New Vegas - The ultimate RPG experience. You dig, baby? Ring-a-ding-ding? Like smooth babies. The game was rigged from the start. O daughter of Babylon when we remember Zion. Penis fingers. Those were two bears high fiving.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - The soundtrack has a lot of singing women in it and I guess I like it.

3. Fallout 2 - Only real RPGs let you be pornstars that play games of chess with radscorpions, commune about daily life with talking plants, and kill scientologists.

4. Dark Souls - OH MY GOD SO HARD, I CRY EVERY TIME

5. TES III: Morrowind - I didn't achieve CHIM, but at least I got the Lusty Argonian.

EDIT: Yeah, it's a fucking list thread. Look at you, people. Explain yourselves. Save the OP from himself.

If Dark Souls is RPG, then Zelda is too? So, my list would be...

1. Dark Souls franchise
2. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
3. Zelda BotW
4. Romancing Saga 3
5. Final Fantasy 6

I want to say TES is up there somewhere, but I realised that I only really play them for the mods....

The problem with trying to list a top 5 is that I would have a hard time listing a top 20 and that top 20 would be in no particular order because they would shift from day to day.

I'll only list one game from each franchise for a little more variety:
1. KOTOR II
2. The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki
3. Dragon Quest V
4. Dark Souls 2
5. Golden Sun: The Lost Age

Pokemon Crystal, FFVI, Persona 4 and 5, SMT IV and Apocalypse, Super Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Mother 3 and a ton more would fit in that list too.

4. Dark Souls
5. Dragon Quest VIII

This is like a rough list of my favourites. The only one that's definitely in the right place is Kingdom Hearts. Otherwise, there's about 20 other games that could be 2-5.

Like, it hurts not having put Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, a Tales Of, Xenogears, DQIV or V, FFT, blah blah.

Top of my head without much thought

Ultima 7 + 7pt2
Witcher 3
Skies of Arcadia
Azel Panzer Dragoon RPG
Trails in the Sky FC/SC
Lunar 2 EB (original Sega CD version only)

It's hard to say because there are so many different dimensions to RPGs and so many different subcategories. I doubt I could give you precisely 5 for each, but here's some favorites, not in order:

  • Mass Effect 2 - Finished it probably 10 times or more. Excellent cast of characters and it fleshed out the universe in interesting ways. The gameplay is improved enough on ME1 that it no longer feels like a chore to play and it doubles down on the strengths of the original - characters, dialogue and choices. Not perfect, but the best the series ever got in my opinion.
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution - A modern and approachable take on Deus Ex. Not a perfect sequel but it's a lot of fun and manages to deliver an overall outstanding experience.
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - Deus Ex with vampires. Not as good as Human Revolution by my reckoning, but great in a way taht feels almost Eurojank despite being an American game.
  • Diablo 2 - Extremely addictive gameplay loop, but curiously I've never actually killed Diablo despite getting up to him a few times and having rolled probably 30-40 total characters in my life. I still come back to it more or less annually.
  • Prey (2017) - A recent entry but I definitely loved the heck out of this game. Interesting story and setting, excellent gameplay systems and an outstanding series of levels to explore.
  • Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver - The pokemon game I found most enjoyable. The G/S generation with a bunch of QoL improvements and revised graphics
  • Baldur's Gate 2 - Overall best RTwP RPG, unless Pillars 2 knocks it out of the park or something. It has a compelling villain right from the get go, then lets you run hog wild with the most content rich hub world ever created for a game. Despite the number of quests there's surprisingly little that feels cookie cutter or generic - there's no template quests or other nonsense, it's just all meat all the time. The main thing I don't like about it is pretty silly for me to say - I don't like AD&D 2nd ed rules. It's like an excellently crafted game and a true labor of love that was built with shitty tools or something.
  • KOTOR / 2 - The first game has a more exciting adventure and movse at a better pace. The second game has some truly great characters and a shockingly mature story for the franchise.

1. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter
This game's worldbuilding rivals some of the biggest games out there. So much care is put in to try and flesh out this game's world and make it seem more real that its hard to not come to love its universe and care about what happens in it. The game explains to you everything: the history of the world and how it came to be, past wars, the various religions of the world, how currency is carried, what people do for entertainment, the various kinds of foods people eat, how creatures interact with the world, how housing works between regions, what people do for work, etc. There's SO MUCH LORE its insane. And that level of detail exists within the characters as well. Even random side characters with no relevance to the plot get fleshed out and some time spent to make them feel like living breathing people in the world. And its all thrown together with a nice Gurren Lagann-esque plot structure where a huge number of hype twists and turns happen in the 2nd half. Without a doubt my favorite RPG. Besides, who doesn't love the idea of furries piloting giant robots while soaring above floating islands in the sky?
2. Nier
Where Solatorobo stands as my favorite, this stands as what I'd consider the closest to perfect. Beyond balancing, there's not any one thing it does wrong, but it does a HUGE amount right. Cleverly making the story change simply by withholding information from the player was amazing, and the beautiful vocaled soundtrack just made it a pleasure to play from beginning to end. A depressing tale, and one that's sure to make any player cry.
3. Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix
I genuinely believe this game to have some of the best action combat in gaming. Easily arguable as one of the best action RPGs out there, Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix's strength lies in the huge amount of attacks you have and how they all have their uses and functions. Summons, reaction commands, magic, Drive forms, abilities.....This game has it all, and its well balanced too. Its an RPG that you can beat without leveling up on the hardest difficulty and yet it never becomes tedious or throws damage sponge enemies at you. Complemented by a soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura, KHII FM is without a doubt one of the most fun games there is.
4. Final Fantasy XII
Its hard for me to decide if Solatorobo or FFXII have the most worldbuilding really. FFXII's strongest asset too is its worldbuilding, giving huge amounts of lore about Ivalice with regards to the races of the world, various myths and legends people have in different regions of the world, the economic systems of different cities, and so much more. It also probably has the most content out of all of these, easily having over 150 hours worth of content, especially thanks to all the different sidequests, Espers, and Hunts available to the player.
5. Devil Survivor: Overclocked
A surprisingly unique combination of standard RPG combat and SRPG gameplay, Devil Survivor uses Christian lore in a really cool way to tell a badass story full of edge and a semi-realistic handling of how people respond to chaos. Plus Suzuhito Yasuda's artwork is gold.

Terranigma

1 - Baldur's Gate 2 - There may be games that did individual things better, but this is the one that did everything exceptionally well. The sheer amount of content, its quality, the dungeons, the puzzles, the combat, the graphics.

2- Planescape Torment - a bit more on rails than the previous one, it also does many things slightly worse... But it's essentially unmatched when it comes to writing and narrative.

3- Gothic 2 +NoTR - One of the best open world games ever made, with an extremely captivating setting and a great "sense of place". Hard as a nail and with a very well paced with its progression system, too. The road "from Zero to Hero" has never been so punishing yet satisfying.

4- Vampire Bloodlines - Outstanding setting, excellent acting, great mood and some genuinely solid quest design... Until the rushed ending bits.

5- Ultima VII - When a company who went by the slogan "We create Worlds" lived up to the promise. This game is past 25 at this point and still does a lot of things better than anything that followed since then.
Not rated first only because the combat was some semi-automated horseshit. Then again it never played a big role in the game.

Honorable mentions that I'm still struggling to exclude from the top spots: Fallout 2, Darklands, Deus Ex, Divinity Original Sin, Martian Dreams, The Witcher 3.
Games that would questioned a lot by purists for an inclusion in this list but still almost made in the top 5: Dark Souls, Jagged Alliance 2.

5.- Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
4.- Dark Souls
3.- Undertale
2.- Mother 3
1.- Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

Including Dark Souls among those feels weird, but if it counts... Well, yeah, I love that game.

Nocturne is magnificent in just about every aspect and it'd take an entire thread to describe all the reasons why.

Mother 3 is the most perfect closure to a series, with wonderful writing, music, and very fun and ingenious combat. Fantastic art direction and scenario writing that makes the most out of a relatively simple art style.

Undertale is similar to Mother 3 in places, but has its own identity and embraces its premise and themes in ways I never expected from a game. Combine it with great combat that ironically is non violent.

Dark Souls is absolute perfection in ARPG form. Sure there are unfinished areas, but the rest is so good that I don't care.

Strange Journey has an incredible atmosphere, tone and music and all combined make for a very otherworldly game that's unlike anything else. This and the usual SMT goodness, plus an interesting alignment system that affects combat make it a great experience that I'm sad will most likely be ruined in its remake.

Shout outs to Devil Survivor Overclocked that didn't make it, and Bloodborne, which I like more than Souls but is so action packed that I felt didn't fit here. FF Tactics, FFV, Xenoblade and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix are also fantastic games that didn't make it.

Surprisingly, that wasn't /that/ hard. Now if I counted Yakuza, it'd be much harder.

5. Paper Mario TTYD - This game somehow managed to exceed the first game and was incredible for it. Both gameplay and story wise, it is excellent. It's was one of the last games to have the good Paper Mario writing.

4. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - This one really nailed artwork, atmosphere, storyline, and gameplay. It was also quite difficult, but is truly a master class in RPGs.

3. Chrono Trigger - My fiancee and I watched Game Grumps playing through it. It was just Arin, and he only got to the point where he was about to go to the future for the first time. However, my fiancee was unfamiliar with Chrono Trigger. The trial still blew her mind.

2. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - Great atmosphere, characters, and the idea of having mostly human and demon interactions in favor of having very few humans in the game. It also was the first game to have the excellent Press Turn battle system.

1. The World Ends With You - Don't let the way the protagonist is at the start put you off of the game. He changes, don't worry. The battle system is easily my favorite real-time battle system. All the other systems in the game were really unique. Best of all it used the DS hardware incredibly well, and in a way that didn't feel forced.
