What's your next-gen hype level at?

Wait and see/10

Rumors of always online, no used games and mandatory spy camera Kinect are pretty big downers. The new consoles need to bring something to the table aside from HEY LOOK, GRAPHICS! That's what I got a PC for and graphical processing ability is no longer the gatekeeper for gameplay possibilities like it was in previous generations. Now they're just the cause of ballooning development costs.

They both had great games. It's just that the actual games usually don't compare favorably to whatever people have thought up in their mind based on early reveals.

This time it will be different!

Yeah, that's fair. I'm still waiting for a Madden that looks and plays as smoothly as those target renders, or a Killzone with animations that are that good. I guess everyone does get over-hyped, but I don't think it ever really gets to the level of disappointment for me, because even though we don't get games that look like that, we do get games like Killzone 2, Forza 4, or Uncharted 2 that look damn close.

I'm excited to see what is in store, and I hope you're right about this time being different. I really hope developers take advantage of these consoles when porting current-gen products like GTA V and Destiny. If we can get games that look slightly better, but run at 60 FPS then I would be a very happy guy. Those aside, I'm hoping we at least get one must-have game from both MS and Sony at their respective launches.

Where would that come in on the scale?

8/10 for Orbis

6/10 for Durango

I've recently found that I really don't like playing games online that much anymore, which sucks because I was half-way decent in fighting games (OmniCloud/Jabriel for any of my SF/VF players) but it just turns me into a competitive ass wipe that feeds off winning and accomplishment. I truly only like local multiplayer games, RPG's, and hardcore action titles that require skill and dexterity. On that note, that's not really the direction the industry is going IMO. So with all the graphical prowess of the new systems, I feel the content isn't really tailored to me as much anymore.

Still, no where near doom and gloom. Ouya, PSN, WiiU and my new found love for handhelds (Vita/3DS) will ensure I always have my taste of gaming. Just not super excited about consoles anymore unless Sony really brings back there first party in a AAA way. GT6 and a WWS RPG could get me to a 9/10 though. The Last Guardian would be amazing as well...

Goes up to 11.
You know, most blokes will go to 10, all the way up, all the way up. You're on 10 on your hype, where can you go from there? Nowhere. Exactly! What we do, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? We go to 11.

Really? And it doesnt excite you that games can finally be made targeting decent PC specs rather than a baseline thats almost a decade old?

I am primarily PC gamer myself but as a platform its been held back for a while now. So I am hyped as fuck.
Pretty much this. My interest in buying mid-range PCs at premium prices is pretty low, but the consequences the higher baselines (relatively higher specs and closed platform optimization) will have for high-end PC gaming are very exciting.

I'm content with what I have (360, PS3, & Vita) and their giant backlog. The whole "no used games" talk has me concerned though.

I'm only hyped for the 20th as of right now mainly because;
1. I like what I've heard/read so far about Orbis (compared to Durango)
2. Injured Sony is probably best (hungry) Sony.

Based on GAF I am more hyped for Sony at the moment.

Sony 8
MS 5.5

I hope they can deliver on the expectations, the rumored hardware specs sound impressive.

Right now, not hugely; nothing's confirmed, nothing's real yet. No matter how supposedly concrete they are, everything is just rumors so far. After Wednesday though, and especially by E3, I expect it'll be very different for me once we actually know things for sure.

Great. Now I have to watch Spinal Tap.

0/10. The most interesting happenings in gaming for me are on PC so I have no stake in the upcoming console generation.

I am somewhat concerned that rising budges will force even more developers to exit from the market, but that concern is minimal since I'm not dependent on them to enjoy new experiences.

For those who are not excited what is wrong with you people??? It could very well be the last traditional console launch we are going to witness and who knows if these console makers are even going to be in this business going forward. Relish every minute of it people! We may never anticipate a console launch ever again!

Sony: 3 / 10
Microsoft: 0 / 10

I plan on using Wii-U as my primary console, but I'm sure there will be some great third party content that will most likely skip it. I have a 360 but there's no way in hell I'm giving Microsoft more money for live just for a third party box. I'd rather give it to Sony and try out some of their first party content too.

I would say about a 2/10 across the board. I just don't care this time. I've purchased every system since the N64 at launch and I don't think I will be buying the PS4 or Durango at launch. I don't play enough games these days to justify it.

I don't know.

Negative hype on Durango. From the rumors surrounding it to the fact that it's not being unveiled for a while to the fact that I don't like Gears/Halo/Forza meaning there's little reason for me to not be apathetic about it.

Positive hype on Orbis, although that's still kind of lukewarm because I doubt they'll show us actual games that exist before E3, and thus on the 20th all we'll get is promises of stuff that might not even make it to launch. But at least we'll probably see the hardware, which is enough to have me excited.

Not that much, i'll keep my eye on it but i already jumped to PC. This gen has been going on way to long for my taste.

Some nice exclusive could make me buy a new system but they have to really impress me (1080/60fps :p)

10/10 for PS4, maybe 7/10 for Durango (the rumors surrounding it have made me wary.)

Pretty much through the roof. I've been waiting for next gen for what feels like years now. I'm ready to be done with the PS3 and 360.

Because gameplay tendencies that have lasted for most of this gen suggest that games will only get dumber and more cinematic next gen. It's hard to be that excited when I know the chances of me playing anything that's actually interesting to play instead of just interesting to look at is pretty small.

Low. At least I'm hoping there will be the occasional gem here and there. Other than that, the general creativity level won't change much I think.

For the actual consoles? 5/10, maybe? I've been a PC gamer this entire generation and am pretty comfortable staying as such barring some incredible reveal with the nextgen systems. From everything I've read thus far, consoles are just becoming more and more like PCs, but with a truckload of restrictions.

I am much more excited to see nextgen games however, as big "AAA" games can finally start pushing PC hardware again.

1/10

Grew up and playing games became a hobby rather than a lifestyle so minimal hype. I think the 360 came out when I was 18 or something. Maybe that could be related to this stale feeling I have regarding current consoles.

Yeah maybe real disappointment only comes up when cool-looking games are canceled for whatever reason.

(Like that Disney Pirates of the Carribean game.)

At this point I'm pretty confident that we'll see a cool non-shooter from Guerilla Games that is a must-have launch game.

They've been a two-team studio for a while and even if they weren't, Killzone 3 stopped being in production in October 2010. That's potentially 3 years (if we assume PS4 comes out this holiday season) by the time the next game launches that they've been working on something.

I don't know what kind of plans MS has, but they opened so many studios that are working on next-gen stuff they probably will also have something cool to show.
I personally just hope it isn't a space-shooter like early rumors out of their Vancouver studio suggested.

That would mean we'd have Halo and the previous Halo developer's Destiny and another one. In addition to PlanetSide 2 which was very heavily hinted as being a PS4 game. And of course Killzone. Enough with the space-shooting!

Very low. This way I won't be disappointed.

My perception right now is that next gen machines are going to be microtransaction cash registers on a level not previously thought possible.

I am primarily a PC gamer (don't even own a console anymore, I've sold them)

I'd say my hype is 5/10 and only for the fact that better consoles might mean better PC versions of games.

With the rumors of always online, no used games(or codes etc to reactivate them) and Kinect 2.0 I'm a 1/10 at this point for MS. Sony I'm at a 3/10 only because I'm hoping them to save us all.

I love me some space shooting but I don't want it to get overused like WW2 or Modern Warfare. Still, very excited to see all those projects you mentioned.

The last traditional console launch was more than 10 years ago. That era is already over.
