Why does Monster Hunter 4 have to look like shit?

I think it is the color choices. It doesn't help, but I guess they have to use those colors for the type of environments. Talking about the 1st and the 4th pic.

Also, anyone playing Monster Hunter for graphics is playing it wrong. :p

Sure but nothing is lost from having better graphics. They could just make a few tweaks to gameplay and have it looking beautiful. Some of the WIi-U MH looks beautiful, specially the monster detail and places like Misty Peaks but some of it also looks very poor. It does not get in the way of the great gameplay but I still get a little annoyed when I see those images at the end of tunnels and those 2d animals roaming the hills. Amazing to see that detail now in the Wii-U version but it looks poor overall.

Can't wait!

Yeah, the action looks amazing. Hopefully there's a Wii U version for cross-platform-online play!

Why does it look like shit? Because Capcom decided to release it on 3DS which is not exactly known for its great hardware capabilities. Though it's true: Unless you remained Wii-only in the past few years and missed the PS3/360/PC titles it's looking pretty bad.

It looks so 50/50. the animation, the models, as well as the shadows, look like they were made after 2000, but the rest looks quite awful. Textures, environment lighting, environments in general, character textures, effects, etc, look awful.

I don't even understand where I'm supposed to look at.

I think MH3G looks better than this shit. It's the color pallete, I'm sure.

My point is, MH fanbase is used to average graphics, and shouldn't care about since, the last entries were on PSP and Wii, two of the least powerful hardware in the market. MH fans must care about gameplay, grinding, multi-player, not graphics. And this is witnessed by how dedicated the fanbase is.

If only there was a way to reach out to a larger player base. One that is is not mainly situated in Japan and that doesn't primarily play on handheld devices. HMMMM I wonder how they could do that! HMMMM?

While a ground-up PS4 MH would be amazing, Capcom makes this series for the Japanese market which prefers handhelds. They bet on the 3DS and the 3DS is currently crushing everything right now. MH3G sold more than the Vita's LTD thus far. That's basically where it starts and ends.

It looks nice in motion though. And I bet there'll be a Wii U version.

Watch me as I ignore your opinion and choose to support Capcom's decision!

Cause I'll tell you a shocking seeeeeeeeeeecret

I play games for gameplay

The Tigrex part looks pretty good.

Yea, that is why I put the ":p" at the end, since I know there is nothing lost from better graphics.

Personally, I think it is the color palettes and the environments they are using for MH4. MH3(U) had more lush environments with a nicer color palette.

EXACTLY. Why don't people get this. There will be a brand new MH game for consoles whenever the Japanese decide they are done with handhelds (8 ball says: Never).

You'll get HD ports on consoles from now on, unless MH grows to such size and scope that it warrants making Console games for it in addition the the portable series. Right now MH frontier is the non portable version of choice for the Japanese audience, end of story.

I want the graphics and gameplay to be more than iterated by 2%, but that has no possibility of happening when the current market for the game is the 3DS.

Is there a 3DS monthly thread like the Vita? I'm in the market for a handheld and am having issues deciding between them.

Given that MH has been a relatively niche brand in the West thus far, a full-fledged HD effort is a lot of risk for an uncertain return.

From the gif, I was under impression that we can finally jump in MH4 but it looks like that's not it. Look like we can only attack in mid air while jumping off the ledge and climb on monsters.

Yeah, just ledge jumping and then you can attack. A cool addition that should lead to more various stages for monster battles and not just flat random areas.

That is definitely one thing I'm excited about. One thing in MH that is common is that the areas are pretty much flat. With more elevation, it brings a new strategic element to the game. Along with battles while you climb and being able to jump on monsters, a lot of stuff is going to happen in a battle.

I am looking forward to this, as long as they tweak the Bow/Bowgun aiming. Actually using elevation to your advantage could be pretty awesome.

The color palette just looks kind of jarring/ugly to me. Other than that it looks fine and I'm sure it's gonna be great.

I'd rather them get away from the different zones and just have each area free of loading.

I love it. All this talk about pubs and devs spending so much money. So when a dev finds its sweet spot for a series that sells millions, people start asking why said games don't look better. Basically, why arent they spending more money??

Brillant.

I don't understand. Handheld platforms always existed, and in fact co-existed with home console. Was Game Boy graphics considered shitty because of N64? Was Game Boy Advance graphics considered shitty because of PS2? Of course handheld platforms have a worse graphics, but that doesn't mean that people cannot enjoy games with less-than-beautiful graphics. Portability is a great plus, and there are other factors to consider. It seems that no one has ever played handheld before, given how harsh people are on the graphics of this game.

HMMMM nowhere else? We already saw how PS360 userbase is interested in fantasy Japanese action games (Dragon's Dogma bombed in the West). Also, Monster Hunter is not the fast-paced action game Western gamers love. Also: on PS360 would mean higher budget, so higher risk, for what? Get rid of the selling point of the game, which is local multi-player? Smart.

Can't wait to clip that dragon's wings, but it seems the game might have me beat.

Are you even interested in Monster Hunter? :P

With the way Capcom is being cheap ass bastards and keep reusing assets to fit their plans, we'll never know if a true update in graphics would influence people. I guess anyone who would want to play that style of game with decent graphics would have to play Soul Sacrifice or God Eater 2.

Monster Hunter 4 graphics IS decent. I'm not sure how Soul Sacrifice can be considered as a valid substitute. God Eater is quite popular but Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter.

MH never really pushes consoles in the graphics department. It's always about gameplay and art design, but screens of the game never look all that great.
Actually, it kind of did. All of the previous games pushed the target hardware pretty hard.

As long as the game runs good and I can clearly distinguish everything, then I am good to go. I'll be having fun no matter what it looks like.

this ....this isn't that impressive though :(

Once again, basically the animation and art design of the characters are what's good.

Yup. The graphics are still piss poor but tbh you don't buy a MH for its graphics. Nevertheless, its similar to how I feel about DQ in that I wish to see both built for a HD system.

People have brought up valid points though.

I really do wonder if this is the direction that Capcom will take the series for the foreseeable future. I mean, even though the models and assets were redone to an extent, they mostly reflect their original PS2/PSP origins. Someone brought up Pokemon and yeah, that does seem like it's a comparison that isn't that far off anymore.
Is THIS what Monster Hunter is supposed to look like now? After all, we have Dragon's Dogma and Deep down for a reason.

That's a bit easier to swallow rather than Capcom just being lazy I guess...

Textures still make me ralph

1) Why would you spend all that money making 3D assets for an HD version when MH has never sold that well on home consoles, HD or not?

2) Does Monster Hunter even have the sales overall to support whatever level of graphical prowess you're imagining in your head?

i know you're fighting a good fight here but you have to accept that mh4's graphics are like that because it will release for the 3ds. you said you're not implying that you want it to release for vita but you want it to be an HD game, meaning you want it to release in a much powerful hardware knowing the 3ds isn't capable of being hd. just let it go, you have Soul Sacrifice to play with in the near future and that's a good looking game. or maybe you could wait if capcom will also release mh4 for the wii u and just play that, im sure that will get some updated graphics you've been craving. but i doubt that you want it for the wii u either.

and just to answer your question, yes this has been what MH looks like for the last couple of games and it is what its supposed to look like because the people who buys MH are not in it for the graphics but for the fun gameplay it has.

Please point me to the place were I can download the trailer on the 3DS. Or are you referring to the stretched youtube video?

I know it's the wrong aspect ratio, but just look at it. It's butt ugly. Ultimate on the 3DS looked pretty nice to me. This just looks like shit.

I have no idea why the graphics are being downgraded so much.

*sigh*

I get what you're saying and agree, but I don't want an Vita MoHun though. I want a MoHun done with current or next-gen assets from the ground up. Not just an upres.

I don't know man, judging by the gifs above I'd say it will end up looking better.

that's what i've been saying, you want a MH game for a much powerful console, and what possible consoles would that be? vita, ps3 and ps4.

i know some people are sad that a mainline MH game has been made for the 3ds and the sony focused Portable series has been long forgotten but you just have to accept that capcom loves money and you can blame them all you want but they're not gonna change their mind soon about how they handle this series as long as gamers are happy with the game and keep buying it with their money. and as you can see by general reaction of those who are playing mhtri, they are content with what it has and are excited for mh4. :)

Because they are too money hungry to make a PS Vita version.

Too money hungry and since they have what appears to be a pretty lucrative deal with Nintendo they can afford to be too lazy to upgrade the outdated textures and up the resolution in order to make it a game that looks like it was made sometime this decade.

Also I find it funny that saying a game looks like crap when it doesn't have to look like crap is somehow port begging whenever anyone brings up Monster Hunter. It's simply lazy argument. All of this port begging talk only serves to conceal the real issue which is that if Capcom really wanted to they could make it look great and play great but they prefer to make a ton of money whilst putting in the least amount of effort. I've loved Monster Hunter to death since way back in the PS2 days and have played every iteration of it up to the 3DS version but the way that Capcom has handled the property nowadays to me is simply shameful.
