Yeah just create one healthy Nintendo ecosystem sprinkled with Japanese 3rd party games and continue to push indies to fill up eShop.

Of course revenues would fall, but this ensures a future for the Nintendo we know and love. The alternative is to "evolve"

Problem is the smartphone market will keep pushing into that and sooner or later push it out. ( i hope that never happens)

So should Apple enter the console market? Or sega? to replace Nintendo?
I mean we need a third player in this.

I don't think any company would try pushing into the traditional space now. Considering the huge investments and losses the other two had to take to get in It just wouldnt be logical when most of them can make a cheap OUYA style system.

IF Nintendo were to bail completely you'd be left with Sony and MS carrying the industry. At that point you'd ask if they would pick up the slack and get up up to last gens total console sale numbers with just the two or would the industry shrink a ton more. Would be interesting to see.

thats the dumbest statement ive ever heard on gaf

Agreed. Nintendo is definitely not going to partner with a direct competitor like Sony & Microsoft. If anything, they would partner with an outsider in the console industry like Apple or Disney so that they can maintain some semblance of autonomy.

You know what's not helping? The fact that when I go to Amazon.com and look at Super Mario 3D World and see that the cheapest price is 75 dollars. 75 fucking dollars. Whose fault is that? Reggie's. For a week now Amazon hasn't been re-stocked on Nintendo's biggest Wii U game. 75 dollars. I hate to say it, but Nintendo deserves all the bad shit that comes Wii U's way with how awfully they've managed every thing about it.

It's hard to say what's going on with Amazon and Nintendo in the US. I'm not sure I'd blame Reggie.

Nintendo consoles have not had a very good track record. Wii is an exception to the rule. The Wii U sales plot very nicely on the all-time sales chart, falling below the travesty known as the Gamecube. Its really no surprise at all.

there is always something really stupid as a bottleneck on the hardware they release

Gamecube had a mini-dvd that held less content on a disk so you needed compression

Wii was SD (but it went casual viral)

Wii U has the gamepad streaming and low powered for this generation and too expensive not really sure

They can't seem to just get it right day 1

the portables are bullshit too. I mean the Vita really deserved the sales that the 3DS is enjoying. that OLED man damn I just don't even get that.

Nintendo portables have always won even though they had the same kind of weak lame shit you find in Nintendo home consoles

Gameboy came out with 1 color many shades of green

took forever to get gameboy color

still Nintendo destroyed any challenger that came up in the portable market
3DS almost got sunk for a while there things looked bad after launch

I'm just wondering when will the same bad-luck at home will catch up with them on the portable side?

Nintendo has fooled themselves into thinking that they aren't competing with Sony and Microsoft and this is the result. When/If Nintendo decides it wants to compete again, then perhaps we will see a return to form, until then, this is what happens. Now... my Wii U should be at my house when I go home today.

Yeah, but Gamecube was always profitable, so those numbers may be profitable for Wii U as well, which means all this doom and gloom posts are pretty stupid.

1. Wii U is not getting GameCube-level sales.
2. GameCube-level sales would not result in GameCube-level profits. Costs are higher.
3. GameCube-level profits are not in 2013 worth what they were in 2003. Nintendo cannot make GameCube-level profits forever. They need growth.
4. This ignores the fact that Wii/DS existed, so GameCube-era sales and profits (with growth) are a total non-starter, they're not the goal.

At this point I'm starting to believe that Wii was actually just dumb luck. I think these guys are just out of it. They can't follow the market, at least in the console space.

Stick to what you are good at: portables.

Again, converge your console and portable lines going forward. It will be best for Nintendo at the end of the day.

Not dumb luck but they are way too arrogant. What has been killing all of their consoles is gaming droughts. Even the N64 got off to competitive sales but was killed by droughts. They knew the Wii was not going to get major third party support and yet they still let it have droughts in its last few years. Worse still they completely ditched the idea of the Wii which was supposed to be their revolution of gaming. Nintendo is a very flakey company.

If this happens during the same holiday of a new 3D Mario then someone needs to be shown rhe door. Nintendo home consoles are in a horrific place at this point.

This is good. Nintendo will be forced to drop the price in whatever way possible and avoid the same mistakes in the future. They may also have to invest in more studios to properly support both their handhelds and consoles and establish partnerships with third parties and retailers (Amazon!). This is why capitalism works.

Chances are low, but Its gonna be incredibly crazy if Vita manages to outsell WiiU this November in the US.

I can see both of them significantly lagging behind everything else this November NPD (XB1, PS4, 3DS, 360, PS3). They are the black sheep of their respective hardware market(s) in gaming right now.

we on't know if Iwata's decision to follow a diferent demographic with the DS and the Wii was luck or brilliant intuition...but surely he displayed a serious lack of knowledge of the market..or maybe he was too scared to change a formula that made nintendo earn so much money.

but everyone could have predicted this debacle..the wii U has all the problems the wii had and that made it die an year and a half before it's competitors, but woithout any of the pro that made it a success and sell like hot cakes

If this number is true, we have to go deeper. There was some deals on the system, could the low numbers be that stores didn't order a lot in OCT?

I keep reading that Nintendo will partnership with either Microsoft or Sony, truth be told what I fear would happens is that Nintendo would probably drop the console market after the 3DS and go full on the iOS market.

I would own one already if it had beefier hardware. Oh well. Good to see it fail. Hope Nintendo learns from it. I think they have made excellent games, but I refuse to support their hardware strategy.

Releasing a new console right now wouldn't accomplish anything. It wouldn't sell any more than the Wii U is right now. Nintendo either needs to find a way to jumpstart Wii U sales (hint: drop gamepad and price of system) or just get out of home consoles altogether. They can't stay in the market with this kind of performance.

That really puts things into perspective, but unfortunately to many here, if it doesn't sell 3 million in a day, it's a failure (hyperbole, but you get my point).
This is extremely disingenuous. Are you denying the dire straits the WiiU is in, from a business perspective, if it sells even triple what Pachter is predicting?

Ok, so everyone else here is being unfair and hyperbolic about it being a failure. So, two questions:

1. What's your prediction?
2. How would you classify something as a sales failure? What's the threshold between success and failure?

It's hard to say what's going on with Amazon and Nintendo in the US. I'm not sure I'd blame Reggie.

If there's a retailer with an issue with Nintendo, it's Reggie's job to make that problem disappear. To this point, the issue appeared to be with hardware only, but on their bigger games this year Nintendo has had issues restocking Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Gamestop etc.

Whatever happens, hopefully Nintendo doesn't just drop this thing dead.

Besides that's just his expectation, nothing is set in stone yet.

If this is true this is "AN APOCALYPTIC SCENARIO".

But seriously, dear god this is terrible. I honestly think their biggest problem is the fact that no one knows what the hell it is. Not only is the price bad, but the marketing is even worse.

I think this is most likely.

Are we believing his predictions now? Does anyone know how historically accurate this guy has been? Because if memory serves me right, he's been a mess.

Not to say it will be higher, but we should save our reaction until official numbers are known.

Nope. Sony actually needs to take the system seriously before it deserves anything.

Nintendo portables have always won even though they had the same kind of weak lame shit you find in Nintendo home consoles
Nintendo portables won because they always offered a substantial hardware upgrade, novel features, or a combination of both.

That's why most posts say "if the numbers are true, it's a disaster".
