WildStar: Reloaded |OT| Full Steam Ahead!

They haven't updated their twitter feed in hours. But found something on the forums...

As for the real question, we don't have an ETA, because we're still trying to figure it out. We've had engineers on it for 24 hours a day since we launched. We tested all this on PTR for over a month without a hint of this issue.

This is one thing I appreciate about Blizzard, and others could learn from. In the Battle.net client, in the initial log-in screen and character select screens for World of Warcraft Blizzard provides everything from status updates about technical issues to when the servers will be down for maintenance. I don't have to scour twitter feeds and official forums to find out what's going on. The information is one of the first things presented to me when I try to log into the game.

eh, yes and now. if you want truly up to date information you still need to scour twitter or the server status forums.

Wow, somehow missed this thread and the news that this game was going/went F2P. Haven't been through the thread thoroughly but what the heck is going on with the servers? I've seen for the last 3 pages people saying they keep getting dropped/crashing. Did the game just go F2P?

Yes just this week.

Wildstar has this capacity. There's a message window in the top left corner... it just hasn't contained the relevant info in a while now.

I mean NCSoft already has another big MMO doing fine with F2P ala Guild Wars 2 plus whatever else they got under their belt, so I doubt it's a problem with them.

I imagine it's a problem for them. I have zero idea what their books look like but they must have spent an incredible amount of money on marketing the original release. Like I mentioned, I don't play MMOs but they managed to get even ME interested! Hell, I participated in the open beta! For a time Wildstar was absolutely everywhere and looked like a real contender.

But I suppose it's entirely possible. Maybe they just considered this the inevitable progression and really aren't concerned with how it goes. I don't believe this but I'll give you that it's possible.

I just don't think what they make from GW2 would cover the costs of what they're trying to do with Wildstar.

I'm wondering at what point does this become a serious issue for NCSoft/Wildstar. The way I see it, I'm a key target for Wildstar to make money. I'm not a big MMO guy. I'm here because it's free. People who are really into MMOs probably bought the game in the past and even paid the subscription for a few months. My point is, they want my (and people like me's) money.

The problem is how long will casuals like me wait to be able to really try out the game. I'm interested! I want to see what's going on! But some people don't have any interest in waiting for a game to work. I plan on waiting it out because, like I said, I'm interested in what's going on.

My ultimate question is:

At what point will the majority say "F this" instead of "it's a good game (when it works) that's free."? I know things will be smoothed out eventually but how long do they have before interest fades?

Lots of people don't 'lose interest' in mmo only on its first weeks. ArcheAge for example, had a disaster release back then, but people waited it out and right now the servers are still flourishing with people. I heard that the servers are still having queue at times. People don't play mmo like single player games, there is no lttp. You won't get left behind as you can always catch up. By making this game f2p, people can always check this game out anytime, not only at release.

I think you're right in that the free aspect is kind of the savior for them. There's always the possibility that some people will forget about Wildstar for a few weeks/months and come back to try it again. At the same time though, some people won't. That's where a F2P beta would have been useful. Do a beta and save the marketing dollars for a solid release. Kinda like how Heroes of the Storm did. In that case, the major complaint was there wasn't really much (any) difference between the beta and full release.

They had a F2P beta, though. It didn't help them identify these issues.

I think they're just publishers. ArenaNet and Carbine likely aren't collaborating a whole lot.

Yeah that's what I mean, I don't think NCSoft will do particularly bad from these Wildstar issues (nor do I have any love for them), it's mainly a Carbine problem.

Yeah, I wonder why they made it available through beta keys, granted they eventually made it public but they didn't advertise it anywhere. Should of made it public to begin with to have people testing the capabilities of their servers.

It's just a little weird that they don't know what the issue is. They should have specialist and server people that can pinpoint this stuff. This looping issue has been going on for most of the day now... I have played a lot of MMOs and this stuff usually gets resolved within a few hours and this is not something that has been going on since the release of F2P they had to have done something to cause for this to happen. I mean it seems really odd that all of a sudden their infrastructure started this loop issue and zoning becomes a complete deathtrap. It just really makes me question the expertise of their staff when it comes to their servers.

A few things to consider. The first few days the biggest issue was the crazy lag which they managed to surpress for the most part. The zoning part sucks, but once you're in the zone, housing zone aside you tend to stay in that zone for a while (except max levelers, but those tend to come back anyhow)

Secondly, I think they never had the servers being taxed like this. They mentioned on stream that the amount of players playing the game had 'never been larger'. And unlike the original launch they're now on the megaservers which uses a different architecture then the servers on launch.

It's a mess for sure, but I personally don't think it's the server tech/programmers etc to blame; Things sometimes just happen in a live enviroment you cannot predict beforehand. They also had no reason to think so much things would go wrong because of more load on the servers. The PTR servers were running just fine even when there were quite a few people running around.

But just like Diablo 3 and Warlods of dreanor (don't forget, Dreanor was busted for over a week as well) they didn't anticipate how many people would start playing. Which strained the server to the their limit and exposed some ugly flaws.

So it's going free to play, huh? I give it one year before NCsoft shuts it down.

Don't get too attached, guys.

I think the management and the market is now different then when city of heroes was shut down. Ncsoft had definitly made the wrong call back then. The game was profitable, but apparently not profitable enough to sustain developement for them. They spent a signicent money on Wildstar + the china launch in 2016. I think Wildstar will be around for a while.

Totally not blaming anyone, I'm more surprised that after a good 14+ hours they haven't been able to find the issue yet... Most MMO companies are able to at the very least find out what the issue is in that amount of time and find work arounds. It's completely surprising to me that after 14+ hours of this looping issue going on that they are still "stumped"

That is one of the only high profile MMOs that shut down after going F2P. Since then, there has been a lot of data about what models are more successful than others, and just about every decently popular MMO that went F2P is still going. Considering the game is aiming for a Chinese launch next year, it's clear they still have plans for the game. CoH's Korean launch was canceled before it even happened.

I'm not saying they won't do it, but I think things have changed dramatically since then.

Apparently, they had this same issue at P2P launch last year. It seems that they just can't handle the huge player influx.

That's just one example though, out of numerous still strong-going f2p mmo after p2p.

I enjoyed WildStar and hope it lives a long life, but NC does have a bit of a track record with closing communities. :( even when offered lots of money for them.

What has been working for me when stuck in loading loop is turning the graphics down to Ultra low. Then you can just crank em back up when inside the game

City of Heroes was an old game when it went F2P though. Pretty much every new game that's switched to a free or buy to play model has done incredibly well out of the change. Look at SWTOR and ESO.

I gave Wildstar a shot but it wasn't doing it for me sadly. Still far too quest-driven for my liking. Being funnelled along a predetermined path through new locations, from one quest hub to the next, just doesn't do it for me any more =( Hopefully newer MMOs take some cues from Destiny and open things up a bit more.

How did you not just describe Destiny? It's a linear campaign set in a semi-openworld, unless things have radically changed with the expansions, which you move through on a predetermined path. Outside of the linear, threadbare campaign--which isn't even long enough for you to hit the exp level cap--you basically roam the openworld, bounce between quest giving markers and repeat the same limited set of kill/fetch quests ad nauseum. I mean you basically grind dailies in the openworld. Speaking of its dailies, you get to play and replay chunks of the limited campaign over and over and over and over with a few modifiers.

I don't want to derail the thread, I get wanting to have MMO's that are less theme park-y. The "rides" get pretty old pretty quickly, which is a problem WoW currently has. People just race through all of the older content.

I don't like Destiny much either =P But I loved the idea of landing in an open-world(ish) location, picking a direction at random, and free-form questing, exploring, killing, engaging in public events, etc. I think it's a fantastic concept that was poorly executed, and I'd love to see a talented MMO developer do something with it.

Instead of land on a new location, pick up quests from guys standing next to you, turn them in at the next quest hub down the road while picking up more, turn them in at the next quest hub down the road while picking up more, turn them in at the next... you get the picture. Even ESO screwed that opportunity up.

I get this, but even Guild Wars 2 at its heart was still just the same. All the events and shit each zone had were just quests in disguise, they just didnt have the !

you still cleared zones the same way. It was really weird to me when people said it was so different and I played it and was like "wait a minute...". And im a big GW2 fan btw

didn't realize they completely removed the attributes system (finesse, brutality, etc) and changed AMP's by not needing to find an unlock item first...makes it easier

Theme parks and quest hubs don't bother me much these days. I guess I don't expect a game to really reinvent those things.

It does make me sad that the support class is dead though. I like playing non-DD/DPS classes, but I hate healing. So in a trinity MMO that just leaves me to tanking, and if I hate tanking in that game....

just logged in to my EU Medic, yup this lag sure is completely unplayable still. Lets try US then :/

or I could just transfer to Jabbit 2 I guess, I mean I didnt get a guild invite anyway (im not saying this in a "fuck you guys for not inviting me" lol, just that I havent joined the guild, which isnt a pure gaf guild anyway as far as I understand, so it wouldnt be a big deal). In fact, you know what, Im gonna do just that

Made a new character on Jabbit 2. Surprised I feel this way but Spellslinger is the best class I've tried by far.

Made it an Aurin and the first helmet I got makes me look like one of the Biker Mice from Mars. I can get behind that.

transfered my Medic to Jabbit-2, outside it worked fine but then I did a adventure and it was lag city. Healing with lag is fun guys >_>

And now the server is down. Starting to think this isnt worth the hassle tbh lol

I haven't been able to follow this whole thread. How is the support class dead? As an Esper what does that mean to me? I'm level 39 and just trying to catch up from launch.

he means in general, in games over the years, a class that isnt a healer but is meant for support. like a buffer for example. a good example would be DCU, which had a trinity of 4.

they had Tanks, DPS, Healers and...err...a 4th one who had debuffs, buffs and more importantly, mana regen. yes, mana regen was handled by a seperate class. which meant if you were a healer, and there was none of this other support role, you were FUCKED

That makes sense, thank you.

I think the problem with invites is the system keeps saying the player doesn't exist since every time I've asked for a invite it says player doesn't exist

I'm currently playing lag-free on Entity-2 and this game is amazing. The action-based combat, the animations, it all feels so, so much better than most other MMOs.

Once the server issues get fixed and they all get merged this will be a mega fun game. I created 4 characters (Dominion Spellslinger, Dominion Engineer, Exile Stalker, Exile Esper) in anticipation of the merge. :)

Edit: Looks like Entity is lag-free as well. For now at least...

Glad you're enjoying it so much!! It's a game that really deserved more people's attention, and it's currently better than ever.
