Worst controller thread

I'm tempted to say the Xbox One Elite Controller, thing is too heavy to actually use its main feature on the controller and its close to $200, but the Wii Mote and Nunchuck exist. They are worse then some of the early game consoles in the 70s and 80s.

So there's a mostly-ignored button on the controller because the design prohibits reaching it when using the analog stick? That doesn't sound like excellent overall design.

I generally like Nintendo's controllers overall. The N64 is just one area where they got it all wrong. In recent years I've enjoyed N64 games much more on Virtual Console where I can use different controllers.

Nintendo was hedging their bets. If the analog stick didn't take off, then you could ignore it and it functioned pretty much like a normal controller.

How do you press the left shoulder button now in that position?

Whaa? Serious? *facepalm*

People shit on the Duke, but I got one late last year, and as someone with not particularly large hands, its more precise sticks and better placement of the Black/White buttons makes me largely prefer it to the controller S.

I'm struggling to think of a first party controller I genuinely hate... I used to dislike the GameCube controller because of its stiff d-pad and that the analog stick on mine had peeled out and was uncomfortable to use, but not so much anymore. I guess I'll go with the Wii wheel for being a nearly unusable pos.

The revised Xbox 360 controller, the one with the new d-pad.

I bought 3 and they all had a mix of these problems RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX:
- Drifting sticks
- Sticky RB, LB and face buttons
- Squeaky sticks

Plus the usual problems with the 360 pad:
- The new d-pad was still awful, but it wasn't as bad as the PG controller.
- The protruding battery pack was a dumb idea.
- Asymmetrical design. Not a fan.

I never understood why people love this controller so much.

Worst controller is easily this shit that ruined an entire library of games.

I understand a lot of people were put off by the wiimote and nunchuk, but I'll be damned if RE4: Wii Edition and MP Trilogy weren't the tits. I can't play those games any other way.

This ain't no small minority preference like DUALSHOCK haters dislike of symmetrical sticks(its not their fault them poor unsymmetrical souls ;) )...No no, This controller is actually a piece of shit.
Look at it! How do you press the left shoulder button now in that position?

Kinda hard to tell.....Because It's true, double edged sword dat is.

You didn't press the left shoulder button. You pressed Z instead since your finger was on it.

I didn't like that controller much either.

People listing DS4s and XB1 controllers because of reasons in a world where the Intellivision controller exists is fucking LOL.

Keyboard and Mouse is not a singular controller, it's an entire classification. It really doesn't belong here.

That's akin to somebody saying "gamepads" as their answer for worst controller.

Really surprised at people taking pot shots at the Dual Shock 3 when the Sixaxis existed first.

Have we all forgotten the time Sony tried to convince gamers that force feedback was a last gen feature and waggle was the future?

N64 or Dreamcast are good choices. Personally, I hated the original, pre-analog Playstation controller. That d-pad was always murder on my thumbs.

But the Atari 5200 controller has to take the cake. It's freaking terrible.

The worst controller is also, at times, the best controller.

The 360 pad is a great controller, but it has the worst D-pad ever conceived. So, for 2D platforming games, while you may be able to struggle though it, the 360 pad is the worst possible controller. Really dumb oversight that compromised an otherwise immaculate product.

Ah, so it seems some N64 controller haters are also people who never use one. "How do you press the left shoulder button" indeed.

Yeah, the D-pad is pretty bad on the 360 controller, but I'd argue the D-pad on the GC controller is one of the worst as well. Too damn small to be of any use. Breaks my heart because I love the GC controller.

Lol!

Since the days of the PS1 I could never be comfortable with the Dual Shock, years later and many revisions and still can't enjoy that little uncomfortable thing.

To this day, I always use 3rd party controllers for Sony consoles.

just be cool... don't even look at the extra nose growing out of his forehead and he won't notice us walking by...

I think I can get why people are saying the Wiimote + Nunchuck because of all the crap that got shoved into working with motion controls, or even having to use that tiny d-pad when it's on its side (like Punch-Out!! Why! Let me use a damn classic controller add-on, assholes!), but there were some genuinely good games that worked with them (chiche mentions of Metroid Prime Trilogy, Resident Evil 4 and, littering and...).

also, screw shaking to roll in Donkey Kong...

I wanted one of these so bad when I was a kid. Dad was all like "You don't need that. It's a piece of junk!"
"You just don't get it, Dad." Parents can be right sometimes...

I still wish I had one when I was younger, but I'd never endeavor to get one nowadays.

The Konami LaserScope. They basically took the Duck-Hunt light gun and strapped it to your head. They also mapped its trigger to...yelling. You were supposed to yell "fire!" every single time you wanted to shoot something. Except it was just activated by any loud enough noise.

I really hated the controller for the Bally Astrocade. The sweet Wizard of Wor port kind of made up for it, but using that little nub for both stick/paddle function was just a crazy idea. Sorry for not labeling the picture, hopefully my concerns come across adequately

PS: would enjoy playing one now for about five minutes, just for sentimental reasons/the lulz

DS3? Yall are bad and should feel bad (and before you ask I am a 6'1" man so the too-small-for-large-hands thing is a myth). The lightness means I don't notice it after a while (UNLIKE THE 360!) The only problem I've had with it is setting the controller down reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal gently during Souls games for obvious reasons.

KBM I aint even going to dignify with a rebuttal.

super-scope-6.jpg

I nominate the Super Scope

Thing was so heavy it left my shoulder hurting after about 15 minutes of play

Also, it CHEWED through six AA batteries in no time

I did like the packed in minigames though

Odd, I never had issues with the N64 controller. It took some getting used to at first, but eventually fell in love with it. It was a great setup for platformers and FPS of that gen with your finger always being on the Z trigger.

The DreamGear Arcade Fighter, I personally owned one, it's super light, you can move the whole dpad by pressing the center of it. It wasn't even officially licensed by Sony, it wouldn't work on a PS3 Slim unless it was plugged into an external USB hub first.

And this garbage

Yep. You're playing 3D games with a device designed for word processing. It doesn't get any worse than that.

Each key is a digital switch in much the same way as the four corners of a d-pad. There's just a lot more of them, and they can do much more, so you have a lot more control at your disposal. The keyboard and mouse combination is fantastic. Digital control with the keyboard, analogue control with the mouse far more precise than any analogue stick ever could be.

I had always kinda assumed people that disliked the N64 controller were people who somehow never figured out that you were supposed to hold it like that when the joystick was in use. But you posted a photo and yet.... Wow.

You hold it with your left hand in the middle for 3D games. You don't use the L button, you use Z. As in z-axis. Three Dee. Whoooooooooa

Probably the 360 controller. Thought the sticks were way too loose, hated the AA batteries, had trouble getting used to the asymmetrical layout (and bumper/trigger locations for that matter).

A lot of my gripes with that controller (and even the One controller occasionally) were due to my familiarity with PlayStation.

The duke/original Xbox controller. I remember playing 16 player Halo back in 2002 on 4 Xbox consoles and it was just uncomfortable/awkward to use for extended periods of time. When the Xbox Controller S came out, that thing was a revelation - why Microsoft didn’t include that controller by default is beyond me.

And doing it with higher fidelity and precision than any other solution out there. With input range that allows for entire genres to be possible that aren't elsewhere.

The things you can do with kb/m doesn't just show it's own greatness but the failure of other dedicated 'gaming inputs' to match it, despite being custom built for the purpose.

P.S thumbs will always suck ass for aiming.

Honorable mention : the Steam Controller in the uselessness department. As a mouse it's subpar, and as a regular controller (using the thumbstick and buttons) it's horrible

This is easily challenged. It has plenty of functionality and is superior to analogue sticks thanks to 1:1 control. It isn't better than a mouse due to it's lack of surface area and ability to articulate, but throw in the gyro and you can get very competitive with it. Buttons also are fine and even the dpad does perfectly well when set to your tastes. Cross-gate layout and I can blast through SNES KI and MK9 story or ladder modes doing all the same combos, fatalities and even the stupid Shao Khan v Raiden fight better than with the 360 pad (which was crap anyway). Even doing A rank Ikaruga is no problem.

Microsoft SideWinder

The whole thing looks like and feels like an indistinct mass of cheap plastic.
Holy shit you just took me back to a forgotten piece of the 90s I didn't remember I was fond about! I played so many games in that controller I was so bummed out when new PCs didn't feature that controller port! All my NES and SNES emulator phases were played using that thing and the entirety of FFVII (I played it on PC) as well.

Thing's so old it didn't come with a USB connector but I remember being so amazed you could connect a second Sidewinder to the back and play two players without needing two ports on the PC.

It wasn't as bad as you say it was. The D-pad was still better than that of the 360's Id argue.

People have to be fucking kidding me with Wii Remote. It's the first controller that let me truly be comfy on my couch. Both arms going over and behind the couch on each side with legs stretched out.

N64 controller for me. What a load of garbage. It required a complete grip change to switch between dpad and analog pad. The nights 3d controller blew it out of the water and had analog triggers.

No one ever copied the n64 controller. It was a controller designed to play mario 64 and everything else was an afterthought. It's unfortunately often credited for analog controls, but really it's just a hot mess of ideas chasing the dragon of the XE-1 AP and controllers that came before.

sony-dualshock-3-wireless-controller.jpg

Quite possibly the most uncomfortable controller in the modern era. Far too small and input is nowhere near precise enough as it should be.
This right here
The handles are fucking garbage to hold, pressure sensitive buttons because fuck logic, terrible stick placement
Only the D pad and the triggers are decent. Even that start button is hell.

All variations of this:

Sticks are in an uncomfortable location, the buttons are in a weird diamond shape that doesn't really work with the shape of your thumb, start button is in a position that could easily be hit inadvertently, dpad is mushy, and the triggers might as well be made of ice since fingers slide off so easily...
