Just got done watching WCW World War 3 (1995).

Spoilers ahead but erm i guess they aren't spoilers 20 years later :)

wow, how bad was the 'main event'? Who thought it would be a good idea to have 3 rings crowded with people and then split screen it so you have a tiny screen of each ring where you can't see whats going on?

Well i guess you don't need to know whats going on as so many of them are stood around doing very little. Couple that with everyone just seems to go in and out of the ring whenever they feel like it and it makes it very hard to discern who is in and who has been eliminated.

I think they must have been paying people by the minute as no one wanted to be eliminated, he number of times people went over the top rope to crawl back in was criminal.

Anyway, the finish was very lame indeed, i suspect Hogan will get the title back, their was no big confrontation really between hogan or the giant so they wasted that opportunity (other than the giant dragging him under the ropes for the finish).

I loved World War 3s. In retrospect, it's shit. A shitty thing. But I loved seeing EVERYONE as a kid, absolutely everyone.

World War 3 is interesting in that it seems the goal was to bridge the gap between shows designed to look impressive in a large venue to the crowd attending and shows that look good on TV. I suspect WW3 the match looked great live with a mass of humanity fighting, but I never once saw it produced well.

They were clearly trying to top the Royal Rumble without realizing that what makes the rumble work is that it doesnt follow normal battle royale rules and allows for more story lines to be interwoven.

FWIW, I think WarGames worked better as a mult-ring concept, which the WWE eventually used for the inspiration of the Elimination Chamber.

Also while I'm typing, what was the point of the yeti? He was literally eliminated in under a minute, stood around for a bit and then decided he had had enough and went away.

WCW was bad for introducing gimmick characters and dropping them the next night. This stems from having a rotating cast in charge of planning the shows. IN this case Yeti might have been intended to be Giant Gonzales (who kind of looked like a Yeti, well kinda, in his WWF costume), but for some reason they went with Ron Reis.

The larger stars and backstage agents would actively mess with new characters and ideas would be killed one way or another.

Ah ok cool thanks for the info :). As I've posted previously this is my first time watching wcw really but what is surprising me (year 1995 only 14 or so nitro episodes in) is that on nitro / generally there are very few wrestlers used. Hogan, macho man, giant, sting, Luger are literally on every show doing the same matches. Disco inferno has for about 4 weeks now just randomly turned up at he start of other people's matches and then disappeared and not wrestled. Very bizarre.

Disco is wonderful and one of WCW's best dudes. He's so much fun. Disco's Chartbuster > Stone Cold's Stunner

Apparently, it was visa issues. They couldn't get him there in time so they were going to 'unwrap' the mummy to reveal him. It never panned out so for WW3 they were going to get wrestler Loch Ness to be one of the 3 giants and but didn't work out either.

Reis was just the guy they were having stand in with the mummy wrap/

Seems reasonable.

WCW was also notorious for putting the cart before the horse when it came to introducing characters.

The half-hour series will be available beginning in April in WWE Network’s video-on-demand library with new episodes weekly.

Also.....

WWE® (WWE) today announced that WWE Network surpassed 1.3 million subscribers following WrestleMania® 31, making it the most viewed WrestleMania in history. WrestleMania was broadcast around the world last night on WWE Network as well as on pay-per-view from a sold-out Levi’s® Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The results represent a 97% increase from April 7, 2014 – the day after WrestleMania last year and a 31% increase since January 27, 2015, when the network surpassed the 1 million subscriber milestone. Recent growth was driven by the success of our February free promotion and the iconic attraction of the Company’s WrestleMania event.

“We believe that exceeding 1.3 million subscribers reflects the successful execution of our strategy and puts us on the path to transformative growth through WWE Network,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “We remain focused on driving subscriber value by delivering the most compelling user experience and new content, evidenced by our new original series and partnerships with Seth Green, Jeff Tremaine and Jerry Springer.”

“We are pleased with our short-term results and, for the first quarter, we currently project to exceed our most recent public guidance associated with an estimated average of approximately 918,000 paid subscribers,” said George Barrios, WWE Chief Strategy & Financial Officer. “We are also confident in the long-term potential and understand subscriber growth could take many different paths. For example, Network subscribers might show consistent sequential quarterly gains or the quarterly adoption curve could exhibit seasonality with year-over-year growth. Regardless, over the long-term, we believe WWE Network has the potential to drive significant economic returns.”

Based on data to date, WWE Network attracted an average of approximately 918,000 paid subscribers over the first quarter 2015, representing a 27% increase from the fourth quarter 2014 average.1 The network’s February free promotion contributed to that growth, attracting approximately 201,000 trial subscribers, of which 154,000, or 77%, converted to paying subscribers in March. WWE Network reached an average of 982,000 total subscribers during the first quarter 2015, including both free trial and paid subscribers. To date, WWE Network has attracted nearly 1.8 million unique subscribers.

Still not sure what the hell Swerved is about.

Observer was saying it was a show about pranks on wrestlers. Sounds kind of dumb.

edit:

They were also saying something about adding all of the Attitude era stuff? Not sure if that means just Raw and Smackdowns or the rest of Nitro as well. REALLY hoping for Nitro. I've been waiting for the rest of that forever now.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
All that original crap and I still can't watch Nitro post-1996 or old WWF Superstars?

They NEED 1997 raws up.

WCW Saturday Night would be a nice add.

Then WCW Thunder??

They have a ton of stuff they haven't added yet but I want better player functionality and the ability to share plaits of matches.

WCW Saturday Night and WWF Superstars basically carried every WWF and WCW storyline during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Neither of them are up yet and some in the thread mentioned they may never put them up. It is completely asinine.

I will flip a table if these -- and more importantly, the god dang 1997 Nitros -- are not put up soon.

Watching Raw from the beginning of 1997 all the way to Wrestlemania 17 is an awesome experience. I did it a few years back via shitty VHS quality footage.

If they upload all of those shows in high quality I'd probably subscribe to the Network and watch them all over again.

I'm confident all the vintage stuff the hardcore are asking for will come out. For the time being though, to try to keep the number of subscribers up, the original shows we saw on that PR is what they'll aim for. I guess in a way that's a good thing since it shows more money is being poured into the network. But I don't think they'll forget vintage content...

I just wish there was some kind of consistent strategy surrounding the Attitude Era Raws and Nitros. Why not upload one Raw and the corresponding Nitro every week? Do a one hour breakdown of both shows with a host (Renee?), one of the current wrestlers who grew up watching this stuff (guaranteed they'd go with Miz) and someone who has never watched any of this stuff (an interesting perspective, and remember there's probably many kids with the network who were born AFTER the Attitude Era ended). They can go over the matches, angles, and choose which show was better for each week.

There's like a million wrestling podcasts out there that review old attitude era Raws and PPVs. There's no reason why WWE Network can't provide something similar. The uncut attitude era Raws and Nitros are probably the most valuable content in their vault right now. I don't think just throwing a year of 1998 Raws on the Network with little fanfare is a great idea. This should be the shit you drip feed to keep people re-subscribing every month.

That's a shame. Bought a subscription anyway.

I can't seem to find any current episodes of WWE Raw anywhere. Surely you can watch Raw every week on there?

No. Due to their current deals, there is a 30-day delay on when new Raws and Smackdowns go up.

So is this considered the community thread for wrestling? Anyways, I have never been much into wrestling, but after one of the guys I really liked for his flamboyance when I was young, recently was inducted in the hall of fame - Macho Man Randy Savage - I have started to watch a few of his matches, and man, this guy was really an amazing performer. And that makes me wonder why the WWF was so adamant on him retiring. First that angle with the Ultimate Warrior, and then just a few years later, once again pushing him to a color commentator role for no reason, at a time when the WWF seemingly was screaming for some better top guys. Is there more to this, or was it just bad writing/planning on behalf of the WWF?

I've slowly started working my way through watching some of the original programming. The Monday Night War episodes are great when they're not fellating HHH.

Any other shows worth checking out?

Rivalries and Wrestlemania Rewind are good. Countdown is fun and good to put on with folks that don't usually watch much wrestling. Many of the Beyond the Rings are good, especially the Heyman documentary.

I like Legends House and Total Divas, but they're not for everyone.

The problem with the original stuff is they all follow the same basic formula, and they're not even really that good at it. They're not particularly insightful, funny, engaging, or charming.

That's not quite right, I just watched the April 14th Nitro and he had a handicap match against Sullivan and AA to open the show.

You can really notice this is the points where the fans got fed up with him though, loud boos all the time he's on and doing his comeback, all the while Bischof and Heenan are trying to sell the idea of Hulkamaniacs and how he gets power from them as he Hulks up and stuff.

Just noticed Javy is missing an episode: The first Raw of 1999.

Thank fuck, not giving us that Foley title win would have been a huge cocktease. I know it's the WWE narrative to say that was the moment they were put into a dominant position, but it's the one time I agree with it. First time in a while I'd turned to Raw while Nitro was still on during the bizarre UK Friday Night War.

EDIT: Feel like ranting like I was 15 again. In 1999, not only did we have the internet to find out such things as when a program aired, but both shows were called Monday something. Why put both shows head to head if you're going to delay them 5 nights? Goddamn.
