Xbox Live launch titles for Windows Phone 7 finally revealed.

Windu

never heard about the cat, apparently
We've known that proper Xbox Live gaming (powered by XNA) was coming to Windows Phone 7 devices, but we'd yet to see any of that thumb-spraining goodness in action besides a brief demo and a few developer videos. Well, Microsoft has finally come clean with details about its launch strategy for the platform, and from where we sit, it's definitely looking pretty promising. First off, the company has announced a full list of launch titles for WP7 handsets, including some familiar names and franchises like Castlevania, Halo: Waypoint, Star Wars, Crackdown, and Guitar Hero, alongside a handful of newer properties like the ultra-cute ilomilo, produced in-house by Microsoft Game Studios. In total, the company will launch with over 60 game titles, with new offerings appearing every week in the Xbox Live Marketplace, just like its big brother console version. We've got all the details, a full list of the launch titles, and our hands-on preview after the break -- so read on to get the scoop!

With Xbox LIVE and a Blockbuster Title Lineup, Windows Phone 7 Marks a New Era in Mobile Gaming

First wave of Xbox LIVE titles from award-winning publishers announced for the launch of Windows Phone 7.

COLOGNE, Germany - Aug. 17, 2010 - Today at gamescom 2010, the world's largest consumer-oriented games showcase, Microsoft Corp. premiered the first wave of Xbox LIVE games launching on Windows Phone 7 this holiday. With even more games and applications to come, Windows Phone 7 is putting the power of Xbox LIVE into the palm of your hand - from Xbox LIVE Avatars to staying connected with friends, Xbox LIVE is now at your fingertips, anytime, anywhere.*

"We believe that no matter where life takes you, the best in gaming and entertainment should follow," said Marc Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox LIVE at Microsoft. "Windows Phone 7 takes a different approach to handheld gaming, utilizing Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Game Studios, leading game publishers, and innovative indie developers, to create powerful, shared experiences for everyone."

The Games You Want, Played When and Wherever You Want Them

In a sea of games, apps, gadgets and gizmos, the biggest obstacle can be finding the game that's right for you. Microsoft has alot of traditional third party support, they are treating WP7 like a console launch. I just don't know if XBOX LIVE can be a backbone to a phone platform.

Why not.... live is certainly better than what any other phone manufacturer will have to leverage.

I really like the fact that MGS has a number of games in the works..... that is one big advantage they have (along with the live multiplayer stuff being baked in every game)

Looks like it'll get a lot of iPhone games ported over in addition to this collection in the near future.

O.M.G. by Arkedo sticks out.

Come on MS. Make XBLA titles happen. That would be awesome news playing Geometry Wars or Ikaruga on a phone.

The screen response seemed accurate and sensitive, reacting quickly to our input. Particularly in the Crackdown title -- a tower defense game "set in the Crackdown universe" -- pinch zooming, rotation, and finger tracking was excellent.

Besides just standard gaming, it looks like Microsoft will try and leverage some other components of the platform. In the aforementioned Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst, the game utilizes Bing maps to create levels (not unlike the PSN title The Last Guy), and logic in the software is able to recognize things like roads for enemies to make their way down.
A unique concept for sure, and the kind of thinking we hope we'll see more of on this platform.
Interesting.

This looks like it will easily surpass Android gaming to take on Apple as their main mobile phone gaming competition.

Android will never be a successful gaming platform. MS has strict control about the performance of win7 phones, so games will have a strong common platform to work with. Android phones are all over the place, performance wise.

I see a new Arkedo game in there called O.M.G. Looks like a vertical scrolling space shooter. Cool! Check out the 0:36 mark.

All those games will have Achievements that add to your gamerscore?

Uh oh.
This is going to like a super refined potent crack of all crack.

EDIT: I really hope ilomilo still comes out to the 360 proper.

So if I already say have puzzle quest 2 on xbla does that mean I can just download it and play it on the go with my phone or would I have to repurchase?

I wish WinMo 7 was more like WinMo 6 (but way better) instead of looking like an iPhone clone. Then again Win 7 (and Vista) looked a lot like Apple OS.

CTRL + F "Ikaruga"

Yeah, can't care about WinMo7 until that happens, MS. Get cracking on Treasure to port it to your phones.

Castlevania being a nice addition, but it probably isn't the SotN/HD ports on XBLA.

Puzzle Quest 2 being the only good thing on that launch line-up. But you can already play that on the DS (IIRC), so why bother getting it on Win7 if you have a DS verison?

They really need to pack that (mobile verison) with the XBLA version if/when available and they may have a chance.

As it is, I'm more worried they'll abandon this in a month (see: Kin) than the quality of the titles and WinMo generally sucking.

Awesome, some of my favorite iPhone games including:
"I Dig It" (InMotion)
"Let's Golf 2" (Gameloft)

Great launch lineup! Much much more impressive than I would have ever thought.

they couldve left the avatar shit off of the thing and no one wouldve noticed or cared.

The way they reveal this seem to be handled pretty well.
Their OS seem to be much more open than iPhone OS (to different phone manufacturer), while they seem to have some quality check behind the games release on the platform - which would help balance the flooded market (and the resulted poor pricing structure) on iTunes.

I am enthusiastic.

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
I just got an iphone a few months back, but I really really hope MS can make this work as a 3rd mobile platform.

I'm sure Microsoft cares about making millions off of the extra avatar items they'll sell to the people they usually sell them to, just so they can now show it off on their phone :lol

sykoex

Lost all credibility.
Wow I glanced at the first pic and thought I read "Snatcher" on the screen. Almost had a heart attack. I really do like that MS is leveraging the gaming side of their business for their phones though.

Yeah, not to mention the wasteland that is Android development.

The way for MS to set themselves apart is to set a high quality bar and stick with it, while at the same time offering lots of support for indie developers.

I also think they need a separate environment for casual gaming/social apps. The XBL integration is neat and all, but the XBL bro crowd isn't exactly a global mass market demographic.

TBH, I'd rather see this on a mini-tablet form factor, like the Dell Streak (which coincidentally has the exact same hardware spec as WP7. Hmm ....)

Its called a Zune.
yep, but sadly the Zune HD doesn't have the specs to run this OS. I'm sure they will release a HD 2 at some point that has the same specs as the phones.

All of these games announced here are only for Xbox Live. Officially released by Microsoft, have achievements, etc.

There's absolutely nothing stopping the masses of everyone else from releasing whatever they want on the normal application store. It just won't have Xbox Live integration, is all.
