Xbox One Install Times are laughably horrible.

Bought the assassin's Creed bundle not too long ago. Only complaint I have with the Xbox is that it takes fucking forever to install games/download patches.. My ps4 is way faster =/. At least everything else about it is pretty awesome.

Gone are the days where you insert a game and play instantly.

Gone are the days where you insert a game and play instantly.

The ps4 is close to instant.

There are videos on Kotaku and other sites that showed the install differences - its nuts. People just chose to forget about the sluggish performance of the Xbox OS and were focusing on media apps that the comp didn't have. Fast installs should've been the top priority since last year. Its a videogame console.

Its not bad when offline.

Ryse took the same time to install on PC as on Xbox one for me. No difference except that xb1 updates as part of the install process.

When offline it's just as fast as PC.

Microsoft should make a deal with third party publishers to officially release Xbox One games one day early to compensate for the massive install times.

Thank @drewthaler and anybody he may have worked with on PlayGo.

Uncharted 4 should have some super-efficient streaming!

NO THANKS!

but this will make no difference if they don't sort the fucking day one updates.

how can you play the game whilst installing if there is a mandatory update?

answer? well apparently you can't.

maybe i've got that wrong, and that isn't always the case, but i've definitely experienced it.

bad requirements and workflow analysis on their part imo. just like the demos (honestly it beggars belief that someone in the UI design department -my friend- was unaware that there is no 'demo' section.)

It's confusing the way it's set up. Netflix and YouTube make sense in the apps section, but why is friends list and acheivments there also? Those are features that are actually build into the main menu. If blue ray player really needs to be updated seperatley so badly it can be made modular and invisible.

Android devices do perfecly fine making "google keyboard" or whatever an intalled app without giving it a useless icon. When would I ever go to the app to watch a movie? You would only put the disk in and select the disk icon.

It was just seemed incredibly off putting that a after opening up my new console I had to download part of the hardware functionality.

FYI, MS has to pay a licensing fee to Sony for every console that has Blu Ray functionality. So one of the reasons it is an app is so that they don't have to pay the licensing fee for every console, because some users don't care about the functionality.

Mine eventually installed (from disc complete with patch) tonight in just under 5 hours. -_-'

I feel sorry for kids at Christmas who are rewarded with an X Box but have to install and download all their updates. They wont be playing on it till Boxing Day!

Go offline when you first put a game disc in so it will install the game first. Then you can play the game and download the patch later if you want.

I feel sorry for anyone getting this console next year and even further off than that because as a new XB1 owner, the notion of having to install all the games I've purchased (which is pretty much all of the first party titles) has left me more than a little exasperated.

I've been installing Forza 5 for two days now.

Two. Days.

Yeah, it's because the XBO downloads any updates as part of the install process and doesn't let you start the game until they're done. The PS4 downloads updates separately and lets you start the game as soon as the partial install is done. But then you'll be playing the un-updated version, of course, and to apply any updates once they're done you have to restart the game.

Of course you can having it fully install and patch before you play on the PS4 and it won't take 5 hours or two days.

GTAV was a bit slow, the worst I have seen yet on the PS4. I had wait wait for the disc install (10-15 minutes?) then once in game I had to wait for the in-game install. The good news is the 1.3GB patch was DLing in the background in parallel with the in-game install and finished first. So once the in-game install was complete I could play offline or exit out and let the patch install and play normally (which I did).I think the entire process was 30+min, part of it was me not paying attention to when something was complete.

I hardly notice the PS4 installs, they install in like less than a minute. Meanwhile I heard the Xbone installs is as bad as on the PS3?

Just got GTAV and installed it from disc.

I was prompted to download a 1.1gb update which integrated with the install process. Full install time was 41 minutes to 100%.

The game was ready to play after 6% but I've heard all it does is take you to an install screen and waits or it to reach 100% before letting you play.

41 minutes. I wouldn't have put up with this 10 years ago.

Worse. Xbox One have massive day one patches that the PS3 didn`t have. If you have a slow connection and in addition to the Xbox One, it could take a while.

How many parents will know that though when buying their kid an XB1? They'll hook it up to the internet for the initial install and then watch their day slip away as they install and download all their new games.

That's insanity. I might waight for a redesign that hopefully will address this issue.

Frd bought a Xbone, and asked me to pick up some games with him after school so we can play together at his house. We didnt get to play shit that day.

Sorry for bumping but I absolutely agree with the OP. Its really frustrating and ridiculous how long most game installations take. I got Ryse last week and it felt as if the installation took 2 hours or more (not sure if it actually did as I didnt time it) but its really annoying especially since you have to delete games from time to time aswell. Will this get fixed in future updates?

Its weird because PS4 literally takes less than a minute for the same task.

It is not the install times only the patch system on Xbone is worst than PS4 (the tools in SDK I guess) because sometimes the same game have a patch of 2GB on PS4 and crazy 10GB on Xbone.

I believe it's more along the lines the ps4 game will let you play while the patch is downloading while the Xbox the only way is to disconnect from the Internet

Ryse is insane. Its more of an exception though. Most XB1 games are ready in a few minutes.Don't just the XB1 based on Ryse installs.

Well, not really the same task as the PS4 is still installing while you are playing, but from a usability point of view it can appear to be done. I believe Ryse needs to do a complete install before being available to play, so it is a worst case scenario situation.

yeah, Sunset Overdrive took me about a minute or two, it seemed like. granted, thats a much smaller file size, but the point is still there. Ryse took me several HOURS to install

Which is a smart work-around.

im pretty sure dead rising 3 is the worst game on the system for install times no?

it installs the full game AND has a 16 gig mandatory update.. it took like 6 hours for me to be able to play

Hmmm yeah that explains it. Still really annoying though. :\

I dont mind too much since you can multi task I just wish games would also auto-install after auto-downloading when purchasing from the online store/smartglass.

This is easily the largest issue with the XBONE OS right now.
Anything to do with installing a game is unbelievably painful, made worse if there are large patches to apply as well.

Agreed. I wanted to play Shadow of Mordor the other day. Ended up going out for a few brews and returning to like 50%. And it kept stopping and not showing the download progress when I returned. The only way I could get the numbers to change was to eject the disk, put it back in. It'd say the same thing it said before for about 20 seconds then jump like 30%. I'm having a lot of problems with my XBONE, but I'm still overall enjoying it.

Also, why does it sound like it's gargling rocks sometimes?

This needs to be addressed. Somehow they either put low priority on this or were too lax with rules on how to allow games to be installed. Ryse is particularly terrible, yet SO was a breeze. More games like that please.

This would have driven me crazy last gen, as I would buy a game and then want to play it immediately. Lately however, my gaming time is limited and I frequently get a game digitally, and play it days later, so it's already installed by that time, or if I get a game from a friend, I install it and forget about it for a few days until i have free time.

Yep, install times are a complete joke. But another issue I found across several Xbox Ones was that in standby mode the console throttles download speeds. So for anything I needed to download, I had to set the Xbox One to never auto-shutdown and obviously leave it running. The entire experience made me want to use my 360.

You have a unit exhibiting coil whine. They masked it with the October update, but it's definitely still audible.

Thank you for the speedy response. Sometimes I feel like if I tilt my XBONE a delicious margarita might pour out but no luck. I suppose it's just what I'll be living with for the next 6 years of the console lifespan...

Does the Xbox One not let you launch the game while it's still installing? Like you said for the most part upon inserting the disk in the PS4 it's like 10-30 seconds before you can play, it's one of my favorite features of the console actually.

I thought the Xbox was supposed to have basically the same "play when it's ready" feature.

It does, but if you hit a section that's not loaded yet, then it pauses the game and basically goes back into install mode. This happened literally after playing the intro section of Sunset Overdrive for me. I get to the apartment, and it's ... INSTALL.

I'm still wondering how MS screwed this so badly. A update to address this should be at the top of MS priorities

Have to say the PS4 is markedly better in this regard. sure you can launch games at less than 100% install, but features are locked out which I want right off the bat.

I'm convinced the Xbox One has a shitty low RPM drive installed inside. Game installs and load times are both faster for games on my External USB 3.0 drive versus the internal drive.

QFT, the 360 was awesome at applying patches.. it's like the xbox and playstation switched places for updates and installs from last gen.

I personally do not think anything will change with the current software out there, if anything maybe future games will have a better setup for installing.

The main problem is huge day one patches to download, because they are merged in with the install progress of a new game the install can take forever, really the game should install first then allow play time offline until the update has finished.

I agree with 1000%, it is quite annoying. Comparing it to a PS4 pre-load time or Wii U, the Xbox One's loading time is laughable in comparison. I'm puzzled what part of the architecture of the Xbox One allows that to be so sluggish, hopefully Microsoft will fix it in a patch

Xbox installs all patches first so when you boot the game you have the latest version

PS4 installs patches as you are playing the on disc version of the game.

That's where the biggest disparity comes from when you compare like for like games.

The Xbox could do with an option to send the updates to the background when you install a disc. It does this when there is a new update for a newly installed game.

Yup, feels like taking a step into last gen with the PS3.

Really hope they fix it because, for example, I uninstalled DR3 and now I dread the day I feel like playing it again

I've gone full digital so I haven't had much problems in this area.

I think the longest download was either MCC or AC: Unity but even those only took a few hours with patches and all.
