Xbox One Install Times are laughably horrible.

I got "Ready to Play" after 15 minutes.

I'm currently at 50% with 37 minutes on the clock.

I literally, just changed my DNS to google's public (8,8,8,8/8,8,4,4) and my download speed is now registering at about 98% of what it was on my laptop. So, things should speed up a lot now.

edit: 1 hour 13 mins from download start to complete, with it downloading at half-speed for half of the time.

OK, so it does take some time. Mine was approaching 2 hours and was suck at 96% for like an hour of that.

I installed/patched Rare Replay just fine, which is 45GB in about 40 minutes. I'm now trying Sunset Overdrive again, but this time I selected Update Later regarding the patch. Hope that makes the difference. Really want to play the game!

Whats worse is after 360 excellent OS, MS ended up with this strange system to install X1 games...which I consider a worse debacle giving MS software pedigree.

Yeah, this needs to be improved as the os is a lot better in other parts.
Phil said they are working on it.

This surely has to be fixed along with the new UI?

How does a change in the front-end depend on or infer a change in the back-end?
What I think is that MS and Sony both had a certain disc layout in mind when they designed both consoles to prevent copies and to implement drm. This is most probably closely coupled to how games are installed and how patches are applied, also most probably also this is responsible for patch sizes.
Changing this without breaking older stuff is more complicated than making the user interface new.

Let me know what happens.

Update: Rare Replay started installing/downloading, along with the 360 backwards compatible games. It's actually tearing through the installations for these and only has three games left to finish after about 15 minutes. So it did about 25GB in 15 minutes. Not sure what was up with that "You're too early" message.

I wonder if my Sunset Overdrive disc is faulty? I'll try again after Rare Replay finishes.

I was in the same boat. It took HOURS for Sunset Overdrive to install, at the time I had shite broadband so it sounds like the patch was downloading. The most annoying thing was that it played the intro but nothing more until it had finished.

Rare Replay took an eternity too despite having faster broadband this time.

I think Phil Spencer blamed the "always online" structure for this. He also said that speeding up install times was a high priority.

It's a great trade off. Play in 30 seconds but delay the total install. Doesn't really matter if you're already playing. Excellent solution from Sony.

It works so well it makes me wish I didn't have to install games at all. Not for speed reasons, simply space. I mean, I have to have the disc in anyway!

PS4 installs in the background. Takes awhile too.

at which point you're playing anyway so don't notice. the fact xbox basically locks you out until it's ready is so backwards. i mean i've not played a single game on PS4 (about 50 of them) that has taken much more then a minute to install enough to start the game.

It shouldn't be, PS3 was awful with install times.

My experience is that it's worse, much worse.

Never had an issue with PS3 install times.

With the XB1, I know that when i get a game, either digitally or disc, I need to start the download, come back in a few hours to see how it's progressed (or lately having to restart the process as it's stalled), then maybe in a couple more hours, I can play it.

I've accepted that with the XB1 so I'm not real P.O.'ed about it, but it would be nice if at least it was as fast as the PS4 when installing from a disk. (not trying to start console warz as I have both, just giving my comparison from my experiences)

I have no experience except for with GTA on the PS4, but can anyone comment on other multiplatform games?

Say FIFA on X1 is very quick to be RtP but you play a demo match until it is finished

Shadow of Mordor was fast to start but you sat in the menu waiting for it to install.

Batman allowed you to start playing quick enough and just locked certain parts like AR challenges.

Destiny is quick to start but only to sit and watch it load in Destiny rather than the dashboard.

PGA 16 let's you play a prologue round of golf as it installs the rest.

PvZ let you run around alone as the rest the of the game installed.

So these games all vary from actually playing, playing some demo, or just watching an in-game menu. How do these games behave in the PS4? Is the function the same, just faster?

I know PS4 is definitely faster, just wondering how the act too. And as others have said, it's rooted to the original plan for the X1 and is 100% being worked on.

The worst thing about ps3 was its laughable patch system with no cumulative and no differential updates.
Yes. Cracking open the original Gran Turismo 5 disc and waiting for it to install/update meant that I could start playing the following evening. It was original WiiU game update level of bad.

It really is an odd one, I'm surprised they haven't changed it to work differently.

You can solve it yourself by setting the console to offline before you start the installation, when the game first starts then you can defer the download next time you go online.

I definitely notice the difference in installing times between my Xbox One and PS4 but then when it comes to downloading DLC and games digitally the Xbox takes the edge. The size of patches are getting ridiculous nowadays and mandatory updates are one of the most annoying things in gaming imo!

Not sure why this needed a necro. Xbox includes the patch in the initial installation rather than asking you to download after you first launch the app

PS4 downloads the update as soon as you put the disc in too you can still play while the updates downloading unlike xbox one.

The install patching process on xbox one is awful compared . No two ways about it

Was playing MGSV within 15 seconds of putting the disc in.

Oh come on both of these statements are fiction regardless of how crappy the Xbone's install times are.

PS4 is just as long. Move along people. Smh
No it isn't. What are you talking about?
Due to how the PS4's installation method works, you're effectively playing the full game in minutes, whereas it can take hours to play some Xbox One games. I've never had it take less than 15-20 minutes on my Xbox. I've never had it take more than 5 minutes on my PS4 (and it's normally under 30 seconds).

Wow those load times are good!

Let's be honest. GTA IV and MGS IV installs were completely new experiences.

In the original Tekken port for Playstation you could play Galaga while the game was loading. They should try something like that for installs.

Have there been legitimate tests on the difference between the Xbox One and PS4 load times?

I'm pretty happy with my Xbox One, but I may have tunnel vision.

In the beginning of this gen it was discuss shortly but there is still a “scientific“ test missing.

Yep the install times are dog shit slow, even with decent internet speeds..It took me a good 35-40 mins to be able to play gears UE , even when I intentionally had it install the SP first. I own both consoles, the PS4 flys with installs unless its GTA5.

Kotaku (and I'm sure some other sites) did time tests for titles around launch

MCC and FH2 where just awful for install times. Far beyond anything on the PS3. It appears that the Xbone dumps the full disc while the PS4 simple copies cache data (which I assume the devs decides on).

Nah, its a hardware issue, it will never get fixed.
The big reason why sony had a grasp on it this generation is because the they used blu ray first on the ps3, so they already knew how bad install times were in that generation, now with the ps4, they found a new way to make sure players will get into their games faster. The "Play Go" chip allows a TONE of the game to be downloaded off the disk in the first 60 sec, then it allows the player to play, then while the player is playing, it is installing the game in the background. This is all because the of the "Play Go" chip that Sony and Cerny built for the ps4.

Xbox has nothing like that. thats why new games till this day still take forever to install. Gears took at least 25-35 mins before we could even start playing the game.

It's not even dedicated hardware. It's just a system of preparing a game for install so you can play while it installs. (Like the first level for example).

Very simple, yet very effective.

It took 16 hours to install Sunset Overdrive the day I bought my Xbox.

I wasn't soo sure if my console was broken...

I work at Gamestop and I can say during the holidays I got that exact question about 20 freaking times a day, I ended up changing my phone greeting to "Thanks for Calling Gamestop and yes the xbox one installs take a long time, this is _____ how can I help you?" the day after Christmas, people laugh but between that and people complaining about the servers being down it was a giant clusterfuck.
