Xenoblade X Localization Changes for Character Models

These changes are appropriate, and will not affect the quality of the game at all. If you want to look at breasts, they are available on the internet.

Eh, the good old porn argument. Why, yes, everybody criticizing the change was caressing their crotch in anticipation.

I could really be avatar-quoting this entire thread.

Well, I won't blame you for saying that since it's an easy quip to make, but even in Dragon's Crown my most played character was Elf and the vast majority of my self-created female characters tends to have small breasts. The only reason I picked this avatar was because I liked the way her face was drawn, which after all is the most important part of picking an avatar.

The fact that I can't give my PC small breasts in Xenoblade isn't the end of the world, but at the same time this announcement isn't motivating me to buy the game either.

I'll agree with you on one thing, the character customization seems awfully limiting in what you can actually customize.

Now that's just stupid. Why would they remove the breast size option?
They didn't want fans undoing their meticulous work censoring Lin by making their own flat-chested, 13-year-old midget avatar player character and dress them in scantily clad outfits.

Might as well just restrict chest size altogether to ensure there's no controversy.

When you publish something, you have the right to add or remove whatever you want. If Nintendo chooses to remove the bust slider, that kind of self-censorship is completely reasonable. This has absolutely nothing to do with free speech.

I completely disagree; it's not completely reasonable at all. You're essentially telling Western players that they simply cannot handle different breast sizes on women; taking away the control in a character creator for only one region. Very much censorship, though I don't think I'd call it a free speech item...

I'd rather they had removed the outfit altogether than the character customization option.

So we can't have this in Xenoblade:

But they are all right with advertising this?:

The censoring itself doesn't bother but considering what #FE is going to have just makes this all ridiculous.

lol I never noticed that zipper until now.

As I clarified in a later post in case you missed it, I wasn't trying to be insulting, but point out that a lot of these other games have had similar discussions. This stuff keeps coming up again and again for a reason. I would just like people to be a little bit more aware of how often they're defending video games that are making questionable decisions about how they choose to portray women.

I mean, let's be serious about this game - the story trailer has a close-up on a female character's basically bare ass in a thong. The game's publisher removing the bust slider isn't exactly your local school board taking The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn out of your local libraries.

That'll save this niche game from bad press!

Meh, what can you do? Seems like a pointless change to me, but it's not a huge deal or anything.

Does this game allow you to totally change your character mid-campaign? If they patches the slider back in, would you have to restart the game?

It is not censorship. Nintendo of America is publishing and selling the game in their territories. They made changes that they thought would make the game sell better, either for rating issues or otherwise.

Most people purchasing this game will not have been following the coverage and impressions of the Japanese version.

No, now your 13-year-old midget will have medium-sized chests instead (as I understand it).

I'd argue that the West in general is finally turning a corner on exploitation of female bodies for titillation, while Japan continues to say "Here, have a half-naked 13 year old".

Those are two very different things though. Yeah, it's great to see any attempts at sexualizing a minor done away with.

Where and how do you draw the line when portraying adults though? Sex, sexualization and objectification are not inherently bad or evil.

Pretty much.
The company that funded and owns this game decided to make some changes in other regions, to avoid backlash from idiotic parents (and people in general) for no reason other than to make noise.

This same company has been thrown to the media and even sued by parents like the one with Animal Crossing "insulting" her daughter, because turned out she wasn't aware that characters could learn words from visitors (other players). So the "insults" were taught by the characters of the friends she played with.

More than "NOAs gonna NOA" is "idiots gonna idiot".

Pretty shitty of Nintendo to do this. Character creators should be completely free to make anything you feel like making.

Why can't every game follow Dragon Dogma's creator? That shit is the best.

You are correct on the last point. This has nothing to do with "free speech", and I don't think I saw anyone in this thread claim that it did. That does not make it inherently reasonable or okay, and it is still censorship, it is just not government censorship. It's okay to call it censorship and it's okay to debate on whether that's reasonable. Now, if you don't like the fact that you're advocating censorship, that's your problem.

weird about the boob slider. but if those are all the changes I'm OK with this. Actually the default bust size is where I would land on this thing anyway, so cool. Sucks for people who like their ladies with a bit more or less in the oppai department though.

It's very much censorship. "They made changes" = removed options out of fear. Censorship.

If people know or don't know that the censorship is taking place; If Nintendo is merely executing their options in their capability; it's still censorship

I have zero problems advocating for a private company to have the ability to make decisions on what content it adds or removes from its own properties.

This is a tired and overused argument. How in the world is this appropriate? Do you feel the same way about every game that has sliders when you are making your character?

it doesn't really change anything for me, but it's just dumb. The removal of bust size options just doesn't really improve the game, the image of the game, or the image of Nintendo as a company in any way, considering what they're doing with plenty of other titles. It's not silly because it significantly hurts the game, but rather just because it's a completely unnecessary thing for the localization team to do.

I think the censorship defense force is the first defense force I've seen on GAF that's defending something while changing terms and downplaying what they're pushing for.

Also, this is game is partially online, right? Does this mean you can't play with JP people and risk seeing bigger/smaller boobs?

I always want my play experience to be as close to the original as possible. I want the game I play to be the same game a Japanese gamer is playing. That seems to be less and less possible on Nintendo systems.

Well they've already started work emulating the Wii U, maybe some years down the line someone with hack together an undubbed version with the uncut content and Japanese voiceovers.

It's amazing to think that because Nintendo can execute censorship, that we should fully support all the censorship they make! Incredible logic from these people.

I guess it's easier to defend yourself by saying "I side with the big N!" rather than directly say "I don't want people to have the ability to control their character's chest size with a character creator!" <- cause the second one will get them in trouble with everyone and it's not really an argument they can stand on, I suppose. :)

If the online isn't region locked, then what will happen is the game will pull whatever local content is there, in other words everyone will likely appear to have the same medium sized chest. IIRC that's how most games with regional specific content work.

Man, like always, I can't believe how upset some of you guys are about something like this.

It's the removal of an option for no apparent reason that other games have been perfectly fine with including to no signs of controversy. This is the kind of decision I'd expect of always on their toes 80s Nintendo, not 2015 Nintendo.

Maybe someday in the future someone can make an undub of this using the jp version. Are Wii Us hacked to the point of doing this yet even?

Edit already said but still
