Loved their first and this one is just as good.

Their albums are like mental vacations for me.

I feel like this is the 3rd thread on this subject I've come across recently. Because of that, I'll instead post the album that took me by complete and utter surprise.

rustie-vinyl.jpg

Seconding this atm. If it's isn't the best, it's certainly the most suprising, amazing, I love how... filled with stuff it is

Damn, GAF has good musical taste. Based on all the great stuff I'm familiar with being mentioned here, I know what I'm doing with my evening tomorrow. Sampling all the stuff I don't know about and hopefully making some nice discoveries along the way.

It seems like this album is pretty polarizing. Everyone that has listened to it either loves it or really doesn't like it. They definitely changed their sound quite a bit but I love it.

But c'mon, no love for Newlands? I can't stop listening to it.

It's good, but I can't understand some of the lyrics. I would put Horsepower as Justice's best song if it weren't for the intro sounding like Beat It.

1. Horsepower
2. On'n'On
3. Civilization
4. Audio, Video, Disco
5. Helix
6. Newlands
7. Canon
8. I don't remember the rest by name, but they weren't that great.

I'd say AVD in general is my no. 2 album of the year. My no. 1 probably goes to Klaypex's Loose Dirt, if you consider EPs as albums.

because I also feel like listing some of my favorite EPs on the year:
James Blake - Love What Happened Here. Title track.
Frightened Rabbit - A Frightened Rabbit EP. Scottish Winds
King Krule - s/t ep. The Noose of Jah City
Foster the People - Foster the People EP. Okay, a qualifier here: probably half of their album sucked and I've now heard pumped up kicks so many times that I want to somehow wipe the song off the face of the earth forever. but Helena Beat is still really damn good and the only song of theirs I can see listening to past 2011.
Toro Y Moi - Freaking Out EP. Saturday Love

oh my bad, just got into drake.
It's cool, I only got into drake late last year or so also.

Originally it was going to be Blazo's Colors of Jazz, or Kuniyuki Takahashi's We Are Together, or Colin Stetson's New History Warfare Vol.2: Judges, but...

these guys are incredible. Jazz meets hiphop meets... rock? It's incredible R&B.

Well now that I know you've got similar taste, I guess since it's free I know what I'll be listening to tonight :)

I don't know which album is my favourite this year, but I do know I listened to Henry's Funeral Shoe - Dog Scratched Ear ALOT last month.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Neon Indian - Era Extraña. it's "chillwave" which is a fun way to say "indie pop with plenty of synths"

Thanks. Sounds interesting :)

Got a link? I am taking any free album to check it out.

By far "A Dramatic Turn of Events" by Dream Theater:

A-Dramatic-Turn-of-Events.jpg

Here's the opening track: "On The Backs of Angles"

My favorite track off of the album is "Breaking All Illusions"

Next on the list is actually a chiptune album, If you guys are into that kind of music. The album is titled "Roots" and is by Danimal Cannon:

Here's a link to the bandcamp page: http://danimalcannon.bandcamp.com/album/roots

My favorite track on this one is "Synergy" with starts off with an awesome rhythm melody, and halfway into the song kicks into live instruments, played by a couple different musicians known around the internet. Give it a listen!

My album of the year:
6q70D.jpg

Fucked Up - David Comes to Life
I don't think I listened to anything more than this. I went through a lot of music with wasfuersohr, but always came back to this when I was done (well almost always).
The wall of guitars and Abraham's voice just clicked for me like nothing else this year.
Far and away my album of the year.

Runners up:
lcYen.jpg

Battles - Gloss Drop: Braxton may be gone, but these guys still know how to write really good music

PAKN9.jpg

Ektoise - Kiyomizu: Came across this because of Toma (woo!) and his free music blog. Industrial awesomeness all around.

oQkWQ.jpg

Zombi - Escape Velocity: If they keep making awesome Goblin/John Carpenter inspired rock/dance records I will keep listening.

E4ACi.jpg

Parts & Labor - Fake Names: All the fuzz and spastic noise I can take and I love it. More like Mapmaker than Receivers and that's A-Okay with me.

OfGIb.jpg

The Sounds - Something to Die For: Going almost completely dance made them more listen-able than ever, and still had a ballad to make my friends cry.

Checked this band out off this description and "Polish Girl" was insta-buy. Will definitely consider checking out the album. Thanks gaf!

Same goes for me. Great song/find.

May I ask where you got the recommendation for that one? Thats not exactly music you'll find easily.

Have you checked out Starscream? Also totally wicked nostalgic 8-bit euphoria.

Check out "Future and It Doesn't Work + remixes": http://starscream.bandcamp.com/album/future-and-it-doesnt-work-remixes

The opening track, "Rise of Space," is deadly.

<3 the bandcamp website.

Regarding chiptunes, I also got a record I can chime in with:

4 tracks in and I'm loving this. I can't listen to this genre every day, but when I'm in the mood, something like this really hits the spot. It's not terribly loud, but focuses on tempo changes, melody, and emotional power. And it conjures up memories of RPG's, Mega Man games, and everything Nintendo-related from my childhood. Heh.

Oh, well worth mentioning because they're great for listening to while studying and that's what I'm doing right now: GAF's own Agent Whiskers' two albums are some ambient electronic realgoodness

this cover is seriously scary.

gonna have to listen to what you've posted that I haven't heard, because you're the only other person with Youth Lagoon.

Indeed, I use this record as my replacement music for arcadey games actually. I played Jamestown quite a bit with that music.

Everyone on here who doesn't even have James Blake in their top five, you're wrong. Also, we can't be friends. Those other few who did choose correctly, we should start like a club or be friends or something.

JAMES-BLAKE--575x575.jpg

2. Frank Ocean - nostalgia,ULTRA.
3. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack
4. The Antlers - Burst Apart
5. Real Estate - Days

Honorable Mentions:

Destroyer - Kaputt
Radiohead - King of Limbs
The Weeknd - House of Balloons / Thursday
Com Truise - Galactic Melt
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Childish Gambino - Camp
Future Islands - On the Water
Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact
Holy Ghost! - Holy Ghost!
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy
Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation
The Chemical Brothers - Hanna Soundtrack

Anyone else feel like we need a thread of "Albums of the year that didn't come out this year" thread? I discover so much older music all the time and it always gets equal sharing with the new music I listen to as well.

This thread makes me feel out of touch with music, simply because I haven't heard of 95% of the artists/albums listed here.

Ugh. :(
