Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

Bought the game day one and have played it about about 5 hours. I started with Hugo just for variety, since Yunica's pretty much a female Adol, right? He's pretty fun.

Anyway, the desert definitely has my favorite music so far.

Also, the bosses... goddamn. I lost so many times on the water level boss. Regardless, it was a lot of fun. The music definitely helped :p

I feel like I should put my game on hold until some of the bugs (espeically achievement related) are squished.

On the other hand, I'm pretty close to finishing with Yunica on Hard Mode as is.

figured as much. Been noticing whenever I advance to a new part of the tower, there's always some enemies that I only do 1 damage to.

Kinda odd, that never happened in Oath, for me at least.

Yeah, gaining levels and upgrading your weapon will help a lot. In my first playthrough, I ran into that a few times simply because I either lacked a level or two or I completely missed a weapon upgrade.

There are a few places though where enemies are just THAT strong though (like the desert area with some of its later enemies...ugh).

Yes, because I had played it in Japanese initially. This time I get plot and achievements.
Struggling to find save paths may have had a small factor.

Appdata/Roaming/Falcom I think.

I actually think the apart from the last area (well, everything after Blighted Blood) the normal enemies (and even the majority of the bosses) in this game are easy by Ys standards, at least with Yunica and the third character (especially the third character).

Oddly enough apart from that one boss I just completely suck at, this game on hard doesn't really feel any more difficult than Oath on Normal. I'm tempted to try Nightmare.

Update notes! My one wishful change for the game seems to have been made (bolded). <3 XSEED. <3 Falcom.

Funny enough, this was the second thing I tried in the Japanese release before the original unlock condition was discovered. I still have my original save files from that too. WOO HOO. Now all I need to do it beat it normally first, haha.

An update to Ys Origin has been released. The update will be applied automatically when you restart Ys Origin. The major changes include:

-Fixed some crashes that some players were experiencing.
-Fixed some text display issues.
-Fixed some minor text mistakes.
-Fixed alignment of some portraits in widescreen.
-Fixed the "Thank You For Being a Friend" achievement.
-Fixed the "Count Your Blessings" and "Truly Gifted" blessing achievements.
---Please note that the "MP usage LV1" blessing does not count retroactively, and will need to be reobtained to count.
-Added an easier unlock condition for one of the Bonus Shop items.
---This item originally required clearing all difficulties with all characters.
---Now, it can also be unlocked by clearing the game with every character's EX version.

So I'm done for the day, question though:

I'm at the point where I have to charge up the evil ring...two things...1.) I do very little damage to the three "blinking red" undead guys despite not being threatened by anything else and 2.) I instantly died once I killed all 3. What do I do?

You instantly died when you killed all three because you were wearing the Evil Ring -- a cursed item that you had just restored to full power!

Try it again, but this time leave the Evil Ring unequipped. Or if you're going to equip it, try ALSO equipping an item that can nullify curses.

Think back to The Wailing Blue...

Well to be honest I didn't know you could actually equip those items on that inventory page, but I see I did have the blue symbol indicating that yes..I must have been wearing the ring

Honestly it's probably something simple, but I'm having trouble with a boss (Yunica/Hard).

The Construct boss seemed simple enough before, but I now am not fast enough to dodge his punch attacks. I had no issue with just running and being missed with Hugo, but the punches are too fast for Yunica to dodge. I try to use the whirlwind and it's still hitting me. Urg!

Have you tried using Bolt Crash to block the damage from the punch attacks?

I was interested in this game but a quick go on it at a friends' house has sold me.

It's less RPG and more hack-and-slash, right? I'm not very good at stat balancing etc, so will I be able to play and progress in a more straightforward way?

No, but I will try that next time. Didn't know it did that.

Yes. No real customization and stat things to worry about. The hardest decision you'll have to make about your character is what armor to equip (AKA the highest one you have :p).

how is this game compared to Oath which is the only one i played so far? What's different and is it just as tough?

IMO it's at least as good , technically it looks a bit better because it's a newer Ys title (even though story-wise it's a prequel)

And yeah it's just as hard. :p

Fought this boss on both Hugo and Yunica on Hard last night.
Essentially just run around the inner part of the circle and don't stop when you notice his hand start to drop. Then when he's down immediately turn around and use charging flame attack and beat on him with the sword until his hands drop. If you aren't around the very back of the circle you will get punched by him. You can sort of see how his hand hits and it makes sense because it gets thinner in the wrist area.

Now if you're doing this I'm not sure what's up. You did grab the automatic dash item correct? Yunica runs just as fast as Hugo so there should be no difference.

No I mean, having to do a jump/glide is just so fucking awkward and frustrating. Sometimes those jumps have me stuck for like 20 minutes because I keep fucking it up or sliding off a platform.

Especially since the jump in this game fucking sucks. It's like Oh hey I'm clearing some ground with jump, then suddenly you lose all momentum and you drop vertically. What.

Just beat the game as Hugo..not sure if I'll bother with the other characters. It was fun but not want to ascend the whole tower again fun. I'm glad I played it though.

I feel like I had more trouble with jumping in Oath than I have so far in this game. Even with the place with the spikes.

Then again, back then, I was using my arcade stick XD

I'd recommend coming back to it after playing something else. The tower itself is the same for each character, but their stories, several of the bosses, and some solutions to puzzles or how to get chests are different for each character.

Since you started with Hugo, Yunica's route would probably be kind of boring, honestly. The best thing it has going for it is that it plays like Adol would. The unlockable character's story is actually the canon one and is more interesting, and the overall experience should be pretty different than it was with Hugo since it's purely a close-range character, versus Hugo being purely a long range character.

Hmm...maybe I'll put in more time once I knock out Bastion and some XIII-2 dlc I haven't played through yet.

Completed Hugo's story last night. Man, for a six hour game (1 character) I wasn't expecting the story to be as solid as it was. I really had a great time.

Going to be starting Yunica's story tonight and then jumping into the final one as a best for last kind of thing.

So...are Ys I and II worth playing to complement the story of Origins?

The whole bumping thing isn't very appealing on the face of it after being used to the modern games in the series.

Ys I & II (Chronicles, in my case) give more closure to the story, but I think the effect is more powerful if you played Ys I & II before Origins. I'd still recommend it.

In my case after being re-introduced to the Ys series via Oath in Felghana (first time was The Ark of Napishtim on PS2 but it didn't do anything for me at the time), I went straight to Ys I & II Chronicles on PSP, and I don't regret the purchase one bit. The combat may be simple, but it still has that addictive factor of the more modern incarnations (helped by the rockin' music and beautiful spritework).

I'm looking into buying this since I bought Ys Seven and Ys Felghana for psp and really enjoyed them. Does this one have any type of post-game content or optional dungeons/bosses?

There's a boss rush mode once you complete the game.

You also unlock a third playable story character and EX versions of the characters.
Oh, and Adol but not for the story mode.

The three playable characters have their own stories, and some boss fights unique to them.

There's also an Arena Mode once you beat the game with all three characters -- basically a "survive huge waves of monsters in a confined space" challenge. It's pretty fun, and is how you unlock Adol, the EX characters and a few other bonuses (like an alternate costume for Yunica).

So question.

Just go the part with the ring you have to power up.

Evil Ring. I did it just fine with Yunica and the monsters needed to kill died pretty quickly. So I switch over to Hugo and I do "one" damage no matter what magic or normal attack I use. Am I missing something here? I don't feel under leveled because I took out the previous boss just fine and had no problem doing it with her with the exact same stats.

I don't want to have to kite these enemies for 30 minutes.

Do you have the ring equipped (you might do less if you have it equipped, not sure)? I think the fire attack did the most damage when I was the third character.

Yeah, Fire Wheel also does one and if I equip the ring and power it up when I finally kill them *if I ever did* it auto kills you.

Yeah, that part's a real pain-in-the-ass...just use your strongest stuff and use Burst Mode when you can. Make you've got the proper items equipped though...otherwise, you might meet an early end.

I just used a whole bunch of mines at that part

Well I figured out that the charged up mine does "1" damage hits and if I use a non charged one it does "4", which that alone doesn't make any sense either. Why would something more powerful effectively do less than something less powerful. I managed to kill one of them using this method, but it took probably 5 minutes to finish one off.

Still though this whole part is random and feels somewhat unintended.

I gathered all 3 up and ran in circles dropping mines and jumping to avoid them...was annoying but they all died around he same time

Bought the game. For some reason my eyes have a hard time focusing on the game though. I'm not sure why, but I also had this problem with this original PSP.

Anyone know what monsters fill in entries 87 and 88 on the Monster Manual? Those are the last two I need to complete it.

Hm, odd. I beat the game with The Claw and I don't see those entries filled in. Though Hugo was 91 or something (the last fight before Dalles). I don't see Galleon though. D:

Do the Hugo fights have different entries? I'd have to check, but I thought they did. Something like Hugo Fact and Demon Hugo or something?

Edit:
They do, each just listed as Hugo.

Argh, wonder if its messed up since I didn't get those two entries recorded, since I beat all three paths.

EDIT: Oy. Gotta fill in the entries for like....2 or 3 of the red blinking enemies, that I obviously can't fight in my current saves. CURSES.

Anyone know of some special file editing I can do to fix something? I was playing with Adol after unlocking him in Arena mode and my PC messed up. I go back into it.....and my extra modes are gone (no option for boss rush OR arena) but my saves are still there.

Anything I can do short of beating the game with everyone again?

:/

Start by checking file integrity in Steam.

If that doesn't work try loading up a save near the endboss and beating him, might trigger it to come back.

Maybe back up your save files, do a full reinstall, and copy your saves back.

I know there was a way to unlock that stuff by editing files in the non-steam version, but don't know if that works the same way for the Steam version. Just google Ys Origin cheats.

That's all that comes to mind right now.

Does anyone perhaps remember where the second to last pair of boots for Yunica are? It's the only equip I'm missing so far.
