Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

If you're going to get both, I would suggest Oath first, then. I think of the two it's a little bit a better "First Ys Game" over Origin. Plus it's a tad cheaper.

Thanks, but for some reason I wasn't around with Oath first released on Steam, if everyone is gonna be playing this I kinda want in on the community aspect.

But if for some reason I don't like Origin (which is rare, I like most every game I play), I will keep it in mind to try Oath.

So, what's up with the resolution for this game?
Even though it's set to run at 1920*1080 on the configuration screen, the Steam overlay and my screenshots are 800*600?

You have to hit "OK" button on the config screen and then let Steam Cloud do its sync thing before starting the game proper.

I think they're going to remove the "PLAY" button from the config screen because of this.

It may be using a different non-Cloud save folder than the Groupon version did. (Note that even with the Cloud enabled it falls back on that folder.) On XP the saves are in %AppData%/FALCOM/yso_win/ and it's probably somewhere in My Documents or AppData/Roaming on Vista and 7. I... forget the exact path there to be honest.

I copied the entire Groupon save folder (named "yso_win) over to Users\<username>\Saved Games\FALCOM\ folder (which is also where I found an empty folder for Felghana named "ysf_win"), and the Steam version read the saves just fine.

I'll give copying the folder a try, thanks!

EDIT: That did the trick, I had to copy the contents of the folder to Users\<username>\Saved Games\FALCOM\ and to Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\xxxxxxxxx\207350\remote for it to read my saves properly, otherwise they appeared as corrupt data.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

That worked perfectly. My eyes feel way better now. And yes, that play button is detrimental if it prevents the settings from taking.

Ugh, for "adapter" it only sees "Intel HD Graphics" and not the NVidea card..grrr

edit: I think I'm good now

This has probably been asked already, but about how long is this game? I played Ys Seven in March and just finished Ys Oath this morning, and one of the things I loved about both games is that they aren't overly long and don't waste your time.

5-6 hours per char, most have been saying. Probably 7 or 8 your first time through the game.

Awwwriiightt...

Got my drank, time for Ys.

Assuming I don't quit earlier, I'll take a break in a few hours, cuz I gotta run a few miles. But then it's gonna be more Ys till I go to sleep.

Whheeeeeeeeeeeee

Uhh I admit I feel like a complete idiot, but I just started the game and was given the first two items. This statue looks like a save point, (I'm assuming it is) but I cannot find the save button for the life of me. Could someone tell me how to access the save menu so I don't have to rewatch the cut scenes because I want to adjust the resolution some more.

Oh, an additional question... Is there a quick way to hook up a 360 or a PS3 controller so I can use those buttons instead of a keyboard?

You press accept while facing the statue as though talking to someone.

As for using a gamepad, if you already have the capability to hook it up, the game will understand it just fine, but you'll need to set the buttons yourself.

I just talked to the statue for a save option.

I'm using a wireless 360 controller with the default gamepad configuration

I just beat a tower miniboss and got the item that reveals hidden stuff but hides enemies...how often should I check for hidden stuff? I don't want to keep putting it on and off if the hidden stuff is either sparse or not that great to begin with.

Ys Origin is rather kind, in that there will always be a huge red eyeball mark on the wall or ground whenever there's something hidden via the Mask of Eyes. So if you don't see a red eyeball mark, you don't need to use the mask -- simple as that!

And Phenomic: if you're using a keyboard, the default accept/talk key is Z, I believe.

Yeah this is what I want! Is a quick way to set this up through Windows 7? Or somewhere you know that could start me off in the right direction? I haven't bothered to research this at all because I've literally had no computer worthy of running anything since early 2002 and finally bought this baby for Diablo 3 and Apparently YS steam releases =D

I also have no clue where the adapter for the controller is either, and I assume that will probably not be a good thing for trying to get it installed.

Also @ Sara and Wyrd... thanks for the quick response on the Save thing, I dunno what happened. Perhaps I just wasn't close enough but I definitely went across the keyboard near the statue and nothing happened. Bad operator error apparently.

You need a PC Wireless Gaming Receiver (or just wired via usb)

You may need to go to Microsoft's site and download the matching driver (or for a wired, here)

You heard it here first, guys. Trails in the Sky coming to Steam.

...if you buy this game.

DO IT.

Hey, I did my part.
It's number 5 in the Steam 20 top seller list right now. :p

Played a bit and even if it's using the same engine as Felghana, it's definately more advanced technically.

True or False: buying this will fund more Wizardry localizations?

But seriously, I had OiF on PSP, so I skipped the Steam version.

I'm all in for this.

I just got a patch as I exited the game, it's probably to fix a final boss achievement and another bug, both mentioned on the Steam forums earlier today.

Also, Hard Mode is SOOOOO easy compared to Oath's. So far.

Put in a solid 2 and a half hours. I'm taking a break so I can run while watching the rest of the Spurs/Thunder game, but some quick impressions! :

1) This game is better than Oath. I really like that there's no running back to town or anything to break up the action. It's 100% GO.

2) I'm playing as Yunica, which is a weird name that sounds like "Eunuch." So I'm not sure whether I should say she's hot. Also, she might be like 12. So that's another reason. Doesn't mean I can't think it.

3) Gotten two of Yunica's skills, and both feel more satisfying than their equivalents in Oath. Especially the second one.

4) The second level felt like it had a lot more variety than there was in really... all of Oath. Which was pretty neat. Don't know if it'll continue, but I like what I see so far.

5) The music is incredible. This literally takes a giant dump on Oath's OST. And when I say "literally," I use it properly. This game actually filched my Oath in Felghana OST, pulled down its pants, and defecated all over it. Was kinda gross.

6) I find the game more visually appealing than Oath, too. Something about the slightly more muted color palette really works for me.

7) Origin is definitely tougher than Oath on the normal difficulty.

I peronsally prefer the adventure and exploration elements like going back to town and going from place to place on the map. Origin was definitely fun, but I much prefer Felghana. Especially its music.

I hate you people so much right now. I'm sitting at work being gnawed on by small children while you guys play Ys: Origin.

Anyone wanna trade places?

I really wish they'd gone with a different font than MS Gothic. Nothing screams "low budget translation of a Japanese game" like that font.

So, question:
the first time you fight Kishgal on Yunica's route, is it meant to be an unwinnable boss fight? Obviously it doesn't let you retry, but it seems like he could be beatable with flawless play?

Yeah, he is beatable if you try harder or get another 1-2 level ups.

You can win, but it doesn't really matter, honestly.

Oh, so you don't get anything special for beating him? If that's true, I'll just let him pound me and come back for the achievement later

I agree with this. Both the change in scenery and music is fantastic in Felghana (Pc version). Origin is still great and am glad to be blessed with an english version.

Yeah, it's not like the equivilant battle on Hugo's side where the dialogue changes.
Here, you get him down to X health, the battle prematurely stops and pretends you lost.
