Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

Wow, the 31st came so fast. I can't buy the game right now, but I'll hopefully be able to before the end of today. I guess I'll sit here listening to "Feena" until then.

Is there a list anywhere? (Can't purchase yet until I clear out a few games first.)

I think Ys games would be an exception to the rule where I don't want to get achievements. It'll probably ruin the experience for me if I actively seek them out. I imagine that the Nightmare ones are stupidly difficult.

Hope you guys are enjoying it. It's very good, and the soundtrack is excellent.

Bought and downloaded. Guilt from playing the free Groupon version: Gone. I'm stuck in the middle of my first Hard playthrough of Felghana but I like to juggle between several games all the time.

Speaking of Felghana: I just noticed I can finally use the d-pad for menus! (Xbox 360 controller) this is a godsend as the analog is too finicky. Thank you, Sara and XSEED. :D

Oh, wow. Maybe I won't need to use Joy2key to deal with that on the PS3 controller then!

Actually, can you use it to move around too? I'd assume so, but it'd be good to know.

Publicly viewable on the Steam website here.
Merci beaucoup.

Bursting at the Seams isn't bad and is very doable. Some of them seem grindy, but doable. I wouldn't really want to do them. We'll see how I feel about trophies/achievements for Ys when Ys Celceta rolls around, but eh.

Have fun with Caress of Steel, You've Made Your Point, and Grace Under Pressure. Those are nuts! :)

Aeana did you ever get the configuration to work? It's doing the same whether I hit ok or play that when I boot it up it's not applying the changes in resolution and such.

It fixed itself after a couple of tries. Try launching the game through the config utility, too.

Did it stick once it fixed itself out of curiosity? I guess I'll try launching a few more times like you did then.

Edit: Third times the charm, after launching it for the third time (this time from the config screen) it booted up right. Thanks.

Steam version is not reading my Groupon version saves. I didn't touch the save folder after uninstalling the Groupon version so there shouldn't be problems reading it? Disabling cloud saving didn't work either.

Well I previously cleared the game with Yunica only and played a few minutes with Hugo, I'll just start with him again then unlock the 3rd character. :)

I paid good money for this Dynex!
K, I'm taking a break from Xenoblade for this. And because I'm kinda not wanting to put up with what is probably the most annoying-as-fuck RPG boss of all time.

So this is going to be my night. Better music, too! Kinda want to watch the Spurs vs. Thunder game, but... fuck it.

Is there a free alternative to FRAPS for recording gameplay videos? I'll probably upload it on YouPorn later tonight.

Spurs are just gonna spank the thunder again anyhow. :/

YouPorn? o_O

It may be using a different non-Cloud save folder than the Groupon version did. (Note that even with the Cloud enabled it falls back on that folder.) On XP the saves are in %AppData%/FALCOM/yso_win/ and it's probably somewhere in My Documents or AppData/Roaming on Vista and 7. I... forget the exact path there to be honest.

I copied the entire Groupon save folder (named "yso_win) over to Users\<username>\Saved Games\FALCOM\ folder (which is also where I found an empty folder for Felghana named "ysf_win"), and the Steam version read the saves just fine.

Hey, the videos are in widescreen this time! Nice!

Ew, more 4chan meme achievement names. Gross.

And of course, more grindy achievements. Especially if "...And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt" is what i think it is (and it probably is).

On the plus side, I do still have end game save files for every character in Normal and Easy, so I'll regular beat the game on Hard this time and then copy those over to knock those six out of the way, if that won't break any of the game's achievement tracking, that is. I had a bizarre time trying to get the game to recognize my old saves without copying over the .ini files (since I wanted to natural unlock the end game bonuses again since it's been a while).

Haha, that intro speech in french was loltastic.

I had snagged the groupon version of this game but never managed to install it because of some language issues.

You won't get the achievements for unlocking things if they were already unlocked, but basically anything you do with old saves will still be recognized. There's just no retroactive achievement unlocks.

Ah, it was the Wii emulation of the Turbo CD version. I own the PSP version, should I just drop this one and just play the PSP version?

I like the PSP version quite a lot better in almost every way, but honestly, if you're happy with the Wii version, you can always just bust open the PSP version and use my walkthrough with it. The item and character names may be slightly different, but everything else should be the same. :)

Ew, more 4chan meme achievement names. Gross.

Hmm? To the best of my knowledge, there are no memes being used in our achievement names at all. Song references and bad puns, sure... but as memes go, the closest we've got is "Pikkardon Don't Care." Which is technically from a meme, I suppose, but I believe it's one that predates 4chan (unless I'm confusing it with something else). ;)

And of course, more grindy achievements. Especially if "...And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt" is what i think it is (and it probably is).

To be fair, we couldn't NOT have an achievement for that. After all, if I went through all the trouble of unlocking that and DIDN'T get an achievement for it... I'd be pretty pissed!

We're also looking into the possibility of maybe making that unlock a little friendlier, but we're not sure if we can just yet. We'll keep you guys posted.

So, XSEED reps...

Now that Ys Origin is out and we all bought it... TiTS?

Xanadu Next?

Should I just go fuck myself?

Stuff TiTs, there are still 2 (3?) more Ys games that need to get on Steam.

Sounds kinda... sexual.

But I digress! We already got 2 Ys games in like 2 months. We don't wanna get bogged down, yo. Gimme something else from Falcom... I'm gonna buy all of it anyway, so announce it now so that I don't just import that shyt (well Xanadu Next is the one I'd import... I'm at XSEED's mercy for Trails).

So...if I've never played a Ys game am I ok buying this? Meaning I won't be expected to know stuff?

What's better to start with, this or Oath of Felghana

I have this with the English patch but haven't really gotten around to playing it. Just saved once i had the chance. Should i really get into it?

I figured as much! But what I want to do is beat the game from scratch on Hard with all three characters, which would unlock most everything normally. Then I would copy over my saves for Easy and Normal and just beat the final boss from each of those, which should "flag" those two difficulties as cleared for the purpose of the "T-Shirt" achievement (and its accompanying bonus item).

That should work, right?

Isn't the ginger one too? Well 4chan related or not, memes are ultra lame!

But that's me being too old for the internet, I think. :)

Haha, I'm fine with an achievement being tied to that, I just think the original unlock requirements are a little, dumb, to be nice, for such a bonus item. Given that it's something that can be used for future games, I would image that after actually unlocking it, you probably wouldn't want to touch the game for a long time!

But I also unlocked Popon in Gurumin in both PC and PSP versions. I'm very dumb, apparently, haha.

Of course, given similar requirements involved in unlocking her, I've never actually played with her. Oops. I should fix that.

This is actually a prequel to the Ys saga. So you're in the clear completely. And even if you were in the dark, it would still be a BUY from me because god damn these games are so good you should not care if you are missing a bit of mythos. I started with 7, then 3 (PSP oath), and this will be next and it hasn't bothered me one bit.

Thanks for the answers Volcynika, Chacranajxy, and WallJump. Gonna download this and try it out. If I like it I will grab the Oath of Felghana game. Seems those are the only 2 on steam.

Khold: A couple people asked which game they should play first, Felghana or Origin, on our Steam forum as well, and this was my response:

You can go either way. The Ys series is very episodic, generally telling the tale of a red-haired silent protagonist named Adol Christin and his blue-haired bruiser BFF Dogi as they travel the world and go on spectacular adventures together (with Ys Origin being an exception to that rule since it takes place several centuries before either Adol or Dogi is born).

Felghana tells an entirely self-contained story. All you really need to know going into it is that Adol and Dogi are good friends and have been on other adventures previously.

And Origin's story is the earliest in the series' continuity, so yeah... prior knowledge not necessary, since literally nothing that happened before the events of this game is known even by die-hard fans.

Given the 700-year disconnect between the two games, too, you can really start with either one -- they're not directly tied to one another story-wise at all.

If you're torn as to where you should start, here are a few things to keep in mind:

- Felghana is slightly more open-world, with a greater emphasis on backtracking and exploration. If you like Metroidvania-style gameplay, Felghana might be a good place to start.

- On the other hand, Felghana's story is rather minimalistic, especially compared to Ys Origin's sweeping, melodramatic tale. So if you don't mind a bit more of an arcade-like linear stage structure in your gameplay (especially when it means you get a LOT more story), go for Ys Origin.

Generally, though, story is NOT the selling point of Ys games. Ys Origin is a bit unusual, as it has a pretty heavy story focus compared to just about any other game in the entire series... but for the most part, the reason to buy and play an Ys game is gameplay. Specifically, fast and furious gameplay set to rocking 80s-style guitar riffs. And both Felghana and Origin offer that, so you honestly can't go wrong either way. It all comes down to whether you prefer an emphasis on exploration (Felghana) or story (Origin).

Pixy:
Isn't the ginger one too?

Maybe, actually. I dunno. Deuce wrote that one, not me. I thought he was just being silly. :)

Also, re: plans for future Falcom games... you'll all just have to wait and see! ;) Ideally, though, there will be more Falcom titles on Steam in our future.

Thanks wyrdwad, now I want both of them.

I hardly ever post in OT's but I'll try to be someone around for this one since I will be going in blind. Though I might not get to play much until Tuesday

DO IT.
