Ys Origin (PC/Steam) |OT|

Purchased via Steam Mobile app, and helpfully given the option to remotely install onto my PC at home. The future is good.

Also, lol

I don't know what's going on, but my settings in the config utility are somehow not making it to the game. Neither resolution nor control settings. But if I go back into the config utility, everything's still set as it should be.

Edit: Several restarts fixed it finally. :|

Try hitting 'OK' instead of 'Play', waiting a few seconds, then starting the game itself separately. It seems like Cloud sync silliness. Might have to remove the 'Play' button in the config as a workaround for that, unfortunately.

I disappoint myself. I haven't even played Oath yet. I must prove myself worthy before I indulge in more Ys! (._.)

You should be ashamed. At least buy this now to pay for some of your sins. :(

I'm glad install sizes are small, it says only 30 mins left to download. Makes me happy.

I would love a simple Steam port of Ys: Book 1 & II. I have never played through those games to completion. I bought it on Wii but I just really want to play it using Steam as it's my primary gaming platform nowdays. Plus I could use a 360 controller rather than the crappy Wii mote in SD.

Does XSeed own the rights or can they acquire the rights to Ys 1-3? would love to see the whole collection end up on Steam one day.

If it goes on sale, I won't have the will to resist. I think that it's $20 is the only thing deterring me right now, but...wait, no! This is true self-restraint! I have learned! I am strong! (._.)

You're dead to me. :(

Edit: Have you played Ys before or would be your first time?

So sometime in the year 3000 when I have finished my backlog, should I play Oath first or just play this?

They aren't really connected, so it wouldn't matter which order you play them in.

Only games in the series where order really matters is 1 and 2.

there's ALWAYS ONE
I don't have the money for this right now, but I can't wait to pick it up. I can finally delete the .exe from the Groupon deal that I was so afraid of losing. And true widescreen support! XSEED's awesome.

How long does a playthrough with one character take, approximately? Might just plow through this sonbitch in one sitting tonight. Provided enough alcohol, of course.

Alcohol makes everything more fun when it comes to playing games!

Also, an explanation for some of the achievement icons: some won't make much sense when they're by themselves. For icons like the difficulty levels ones, all the difficulties equal one big picture you can put together. So, with every difficulty you beat, it's like a new piece of the puzzle!

Ys 1 is beatable in that timeframe even for a first-timer!

I've been playing through Ys book I & II completely virgin, knowing nothing of the game on Wii virtual console ever since it first dropped on that service.

And in my opinion Darm Tower is a complete and utter show-stopping buzz-kill; all those dead ends and teleports :( and I've gone up like 16 or 17 levels, got completely stuck and lost. Which is sad, because the Ys book I and II was a game I lusted after as a child and was very stoked to play.

There's no way to skip the intros, is there? I accidentaly exited the game after a couple of minutes into the videos and have to sit throgh them again now.

You can skip them after the first time you've watched them in full. Or disable videos entirely, but that's definitely not preferrable.

Whoa, totally forgot this is out already! Probably need to wait to get this until I finish oath, which I'm not starting until I beat 7, which I think I'm in the last couple hours of the game, I think.

So much Ys to get through!

lol @ some of these achivements

Some aren't too bad, like Bursting at the Seams. Buyin' out the Bar seems like it'd be a hellacious grind.

What the heck is up with some of these like Only a Ginger Can Call Another Ginger "Ginger" and Pikkardon Don't Care?

As for Caress of Steel (or any of fun Nightmare-related achivements), best of luck!

Hm... I want to pick this up now, but I am only an hour or two away from finishing Oath. Time to do that first.

Also, is it 5-6 hours total (which is about where I'll end up when Oath is said and done) or is it 5-6 hours per character?

Ideally, if you take the time to look for everything and grind a little (you don't really need to, but even one extra level can help on a boss), it might take you around 6-8 hours. (My average was around 7 or so.)
Though if you just blaze through the game, I imagine it'll take considerably less time.

Actually, I'd say it does matter in this case. This entire game is like a celebration of Ys 1, its story is all about Ys 1, and will be a lot more interesting to someone who'se played through that one.

Don't let Ys I get you down -- Ys II will live up to your expectations, and then some! It's one of my personal favorite games in the series, and is absolutely *amazing* when you consider it was originally made in 1989. It's an improvement over Ys I in absolutely every regard.

Also, I don't know which version of Ys I & II you're playing, but if it's the PSP version on UMD, check the back of the instruction manual. Ys I can be pretty obtuse, so I wrote up a full walkthrough for it, anticipating these sorts of reactions.

(Though personally, I quite like Darm Tower! But I can totally see why others wouldn't. And consequently, despite Ys Origin taking place in the same tower, the level designs and gameplay couldn't be more different between the two, so don't let Darm Tower discourage you from playing Ys Origin!)

Ys II as well, but in fact, it goes both ways. If you play Origin first, then later go back and play Ys I & II, it adds to your enjoyment of those games instead. Pretty much you still can't go wrong, if you ask me.

Totally agreed with Sara. It's kind of like the whole thing with Ys VI and Ys Seven. If you play Ys VI first, then when you see Geis in Ys Seven, you're like, HEEEEY! IT'S GEIS!! But if you play Ys Seven first, then go back and play Ys VI, you'll see Geis in Ys VI and be like, HEEEY! IT'S GEIS!!

Either way, you're getting just as much enjoyment out of seeing a familiar face. ;)

Maybe it's obtuse in comparison to a modern RPG where you'd have a minimap with a quest icon and an arrow pointing your way, but I think everything you need to do is told to you in-game by one of the three important NPCs.

The walkthrough was a nice touch, and it is appreciated, but it's not like the game is indecipherable.

Ah, it was the Wii emulation of the Turbo CD version. I own the PSP version, should I just drop this one and just play the PSP version?

I would say so, the PSP version is really, really good.

And the opening FMV intro for Ys II is like, my favorite thing ever.

The biggest problem is when you have to go quite a ways back down the tower, which is unintuitive.

No, I'm not stupid, I don't need minimaps or quest icons. Darm Tower is a fucking mess in Ys book one. It seems like its designed to confuse the player, if so, great mission accoplished, lol.

back on point, I got the jp groupon version of Ys Origin, still get the groupon.jp spam in my email as proof of my love, lol. But, sadly never got around to playing it. Looks like steam is the way for me.

Thank you so much for that. It really helped me a lot.

Ys II is so epic!!! Ys I's boss hard, but when Ys II began. I was with my cousin and we were both going WTF this is too awesome!!! X_X

Playing this game with Xbox controller is yummy. Also, for the previous poster who asked, yes Nightmare is unlocked from the start.

Added to my wishlist. I've promised myself that I won't buy this until I've finished Oath. I can do this! (._.)

I did the same, but that's because I'm finishing up a Persona 3 playthrough and the post is delivering my Vita tomorrow. I intend to play Ys I & II before I fire this up. :) Hope you're enjoying Oath. It's a really fun game.
