Lang is a badass in the movie. One of the best villians ever.
Watch the Deleted Scene "You're a long way from earth" and you will see how truly badass Lang is.

Then you will curse Cameron for not putting that scene in the Extended Cut

Watched the documentary. Was surprisingly great. Lot of content and detail on all of the making-of stuff. I also liked the "real talk" with Cameron about all the criticisms places like gaf had with the first trailers and some of the simple story shit.

Also a pleasure to see everything shot in HD for bonus features. There also seems to be a substantial amount of other production features and various art on the discs.

Other than the poor cardboard packaging id say this is one of the best Blu-Ray releases so far.

I love the packaging personally. Only downside is that it is fingerprint heaven :lol
The packaging is very pretty, but a pain in the ass to get to the discs easily. Funny how it uses more packaging material than a plastic case with a small flap.

Yep, my final opinion = Cameron should have never cut the Earth opening.

It works too damn well. The cut from the opening Pandora flyover sequence to Jake on the street is absolutely perfect. The music is excellent, love the intensity in Worthingtons eyes in the opening shot and I don't feel that the pacing suffers at all.

We also get an awesome extension to the spaceship takeoff, so thats a great bonus.

I feel the same way. Like I said above it also makes you understand why he helps them in the end.

I can't wait to see the Quaritch/Selfridge deleted scene and the acid trip / festival scene.

I should have known Amazon would fuck up my order and ship late.

You have much more context to see why does what he does, it's completely in character.

Shit, you just have to take a look at the first 5 seconds of the opening and see Worthington's eyes in order to realize the sequence should have never been cut.

Haven't watched the new cut of the film, but I just finished the making of and every deleted scene.

That making of was amazing. The stuff the crew did for this film, the things the actors did to make this film and the things weta and ilm and everyone else did to make this happen is just beyond amazing. Based of all reports (I know we touched on this earlier in this thread somewhere :lol ) and watching this it really felt like everyone came together as one to complete this film. It actually seemed like they became a large family which makes me even more excited for the sequels if we get this passion again from everyone.

I agree with Dead in that they should NEVER have cut "You're a long way from Earth" scene or a few others. I really wish they would have finished the Festival and the hand holding scene before Jake gets his Ikran (which they briefly showed in the making of) along with the scene of Grace talking to Jake before his dream sequence and Jake admitting to them about working for Quaritch. There's more (some should have been cut, like the "Norm's a god" scene), but the above to me felt like they added so much more to the characters.

Either way so far this is by far the best blu-ray release yet. Will watch the extended cut tomorrow. I'm pretty damn excited to see Earth.

P.S. the "New Life" scene did not show Neytiri pregnant. It implies it sure by him putting his hand on her stomach, but it felt to me just about the Na'vi starting over.

I actually just watched the Dreamhunt.

Holy crap! Its actually the single biggest chunk of footage that was cut from the movie. 10 straight minutes!

The whole Acid trip is trippy as fuck. I mean, they could probably not even bother to render it, and it would still work within the completed movie (provided the "reality" scenes were finished). Honestly I have no clue what it would even look like 100% rendered (a cross between the Fountain and The Matrix?), but it looks pretty awesome, even in template format :lol

For anyone who's seen it, what's in the newest cut that isn't in the other longer cut? I know there is the earth intro, but that's only 4.5 of the 6 mins right?

I need some help. I want to get my mom an Avatar book with lots of pics/sketches of the designs and the movie, technical stuff isn´t as important.

Now, there´s

Avatar: the making of at almost 300 pages

Avatar artbook at 100p

The super-duper Collector´s Edition from Amazon.de has a 44 page book included (and one pic from the film reel!!!1!), but it´s TWICE the price of the regular CE.

Which one hast the most prettiest pics?

Get those two. If you have to pick one, get the former. Both superb, with minimal overlap.

Any additional use of the word 'unobtainium' is a poor addition.

A cool thing I learned from the new release is that all Na'vi are left handed.

Only scene that I felt wasn't needed at all. Cameron didn't need to give in to the whiners (BU-BU HOW DO DEY FLOAT?!?!)

So what else is different between the two longer cuts? I'm really looking forward to seeing the rerelease version, it's the one I haven't seen, and I imagine, the best. Assuming Neytiri's sister's subplot is in that version, that was the best addition from the original cut I believe.

Neytiris sister subplot is only the Extended cut

Still not long enough lol

Theres almost 20 minutes of the deleted scenes that I'd love to see finished and included in an extended cut. :lol

Watching some of that stuff was pretty incredible. There is some I wouldn't want to see restored, but there is actually some beautiful writing in there, better than anything that made it in the movie that got cut. Stuff I wish they had retro fitted into other scenes somehow. The line about the Na'vi for lie for example, that was really great.

Just visually speaking, the plasma storm and the dream hunt both would have been supreme eye porn.

The major scenes I'd like to see completed are:

- Dream Hunt
- Hunt Festival
- The Eye of Ewya

thats already 15 minutes worth

Im kind of ambivalent about the scene where the Avatars attack, but it has an awesome action segment where the mercs are getting torn to shreds by the animals. Wouldve been cool to see.

I think the duel should have come back for sure, and the dream hunt. I can see why they wouldn't, but I think they'd both strengthen the movie.

The Eye was really cool.

The Avatar's over throwing the compound was bad I think. It along with the Norm/Trudy stuff should have gone.

Dead

Oh yeah the Duel.

That scene had some great stuff that shouldn't have been cut AT ALL, like the extended part where Neytiri makes clear she wants to stay with Jake, but the Duel itself seems like it kinda goes on for a bit too long.

Maybe id have a different opinion of it if I saw it fully rendered, dunno.

But yeah, the Dreamhunt scene is really a big loss imo. Great character building for Jake, incredible visuals, and I think it makes the predictability of the whole Toruk Makto thing go down a little better as with the scene it becomes more of a running subplot rather than something that should be "surprising"

The dreamhunt is the biggest loss I believe. It's hippie shit that would have got the film more crap for being tree hugging, but the context is great, seeing him walk out into the bit of the film that made it "The Na'vi say every person is born twice" or words to that effect, I got chills, it had far greater impact knowing he actually had a real final challenge to face not a essentially ceremonial party.

Dead

lol, the movie would be called "tree hugging" no matter what.

But the scene would have never fit in the theatrical cut for the simple reason that just by having it in the movie, the movie ends up longer than the IMAX limit.

Wouldn't the source be rainwater or a lake/pond like in the mountains?

I'll have to research this more...

There's a lot more material I'd rather see gone than that. The film is so front loaded. I'd have removed everything between his first and second time using the Avatar. He meets Avatar' Grace, next shot they're flying into the jungle where he'll get separated from the group. Speed that first act right up.

Holy Fucking SHIT at this Making of Documentary. They actually got trainers to teach the actors how walk like a Navi?! Learning the actual language!? Why can't other film makers be like Cameron?

This shit is fucking incredible

Dude, you gotta see the Making Of for Aliens. They faced a ton of adversity and utizilized a lot of creativity. it's available here

It's long but well worth seeing. Cameron at his best when it comes to shooting miniatures, rear screen projection, and illusion camera techniques.

That word was used before this movie came out though. It's just a generic name for a do all element.

I'll start watching all the deleted scene when I get out of class and take my son to his mothers house.

It's actually a joke name used for something hard to get. That doesn't stop it being moronic though.

I just checked it out, as the bluray's have a handy 'just look at the new bits' section. I'm a bit frustrated. The new cut adds three scenes, the intro which I don't like, it 'fixes' the second act montage which really really needed work, and the third scene I'm completely indifferent to, it adds nothing, it hurts nothing.

Reminds me of T2, there isn't a cut of T2 I'm really happy with, the theatrical cut is the tightest, but it's actually missing my favorite scene, and I'd say it's a vital one. The one where Sarah almost destroys the chip.

Another Cameron movie where I'm destine to never be completely happy.

Just finished the Extended Cut.

Yeah, Ill probably never watch the theatrical cut again :lol

Everything added just feels like it was always meant to be there, its all organically woven in. The one bit that I was iffy on when I saw the Special Edition in theaters was the way the Hunt was re-inserted, but watching it again the edit worked just fine, and by re-using that bit of music from the final battle, it kinda establishes it as a Na'vi hunting/warrior theme. Same with the Tsu'tey scene, after seeing it once, it just felt "right" this time. The opening fit in perfectly imo, it just kinda naturally feels like the proper start to Jake's adventure.

Although...everytime I watch the movie in the future, Im pretty sure I will forever notice the gaping omission of the Dreamhunt. When the "ceremony" scene came on, all I could think of "whyyyyyyyyyyyy!" :lol

Holy shit, I just unpacked the thing to put it in the cabinet with my other BDs, and goddamn is it ever a classy looking set. Love the glossy outer hardcover sleeve, and the interior hardcover book format is beautiful. Totally doesn't fit at all with the rest of the spines in my collection though :lol Its taller than everything else by about half an inch. But I guess when you're the highest grossing movie of all time, you're allowed to fuck up the aesthetics of Solo's collection :D

Probably gonna be another week or two until I have a free afternoon to dive into this :( I don't wanna do this shit piecemeal - I won't touch it until I have the time to watch the extended cut and all the extras in one go.

I think it'll be a nice experience indeed.

Be warned, the extras include looks at the new scenes, so if you want your virgin eyes slowly seduced, watch the film before the extras, although it might seem like building up to it might feel more natural.

Thats my plan - start with Disc 1 (longest cut of the film), then onto Disc 2 (starting with the 90 min doc then going from there), and finishing with 3.
