The Xbox version still looks better even though it's using the older "engine" on Lensoftruth.

Was going to double dip but I think I'll pass.

Will drop pants for Sony.
I'm going to have to play the demo myself, not sure who to believe in this thread, one person says lots of screen tearing and another says no. I've played both mass effect games on 360 and they also had their fair share of issues as well.

Trust me, this demo looks significantly worse.

There's some hope it's an old build.

Definitely lots in the cut scenes, not so much in the gameplay.
You can't count stuff like the prerecorded stuff really. The 'story so far' intro for example, that's full of it because it's just captures from the first game on 360 which ran like dog shit.

That is true.

I'd say it's like this:

Prerecorded FMV: tons of tearing.

Action-heavy in-engine cut scenes: quite a bit of frame rate drops.

Gameplay (fighting): fairly stable but not solid like 360 version.

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty accurate.

Funny they made the 'story so far' thing out of the 360 build. The DS2 demo also begins with a DS story so far video, which was also from the console build (not sure which). There are much nicer looking PC versions of both you could have used to source video clips, seems odd to use the console versions.

I just played the demo. Didn't finish it, but played most of it.

WTF at the FMV screen tearing. I didn't even know that was possible. I blame the source of the video capture.

The game performance was fine for me. I didn't notice much, if any, screen tearing during gameplay. The framerate seems unlocked. Some areas are silky smooth higher than 30 FPS.

Blown away by the opening of the game. Reminded me of the newest Star Trek movie where it's balls to the walls action. I really liked it and the demo made me interested in the full game.

As far as the shooting. I thought it was fine. You mostly just use the pistol. Love the auto-ammo pickup. I don't like how the reticule is always on the screen. I was clumsy with the power usage, but I can see where the combat situations will be strategic. The matching mini-game is annoying, but I suppose it's necessary to differentiate the character profiles.

Overall, impressed by the visuals(except for Miranda's FUBAR FACE) and voice acting. I only encountered one bug where my character stood in the wrong place during a dialogue sequence and the camera kept panning to the wall. I think I'll pick this up later.

Your mind works in ways I'd never contemplated.

Geez, not only do ducks have gigantic spear penises, but they've also got a deep side about pussy and shit.

I'm under an embargo on the full version of the game, but I spent a bit of time with the demo now and I'll say it's 100% representative, performance wise.

Downloaded the demo, first time I've ever played a Mass Effect game. A great deal of fun it was. The demo was so lengthy I kinda forgot I was playing a demo, when it ended abruptly I was shocked and saddened lol.

Day one for me.

Haven't touched the demo yet, downloaded last night, but i think i will buy the game on the ps3 regardless. Mass effect 1 and 2 have had their own issues but I overlooked those.

Hmm doesn't sound that bad to me. Mass effect 2 had some issues but the game wasn't unplayable.

That's pretty good news. The demo ran well for me.

Wow those lens of truth pics make it look like its missing shadows on faces etc in the ps3 version. Was thinking of double dipping but no thanks.

neojubei said:

I recommend not rationalizing this away. It's counterproductive. This demo performs a lot worse than the 360 full game did. Unless one doesn't notice performance flaws at all, it is quite obvious to anyone.

The jury's still out on the retail game, though the alleged reviewer above suggests the demo is representative of the performance of the review game.

It's fine, but it should be better.

Indeed. Remember Bioware were shouting about how this version was going to be using an updated engine and the port is a year later. It should be on par if not better than the other console experience at this point.

I love ME 1 & 2 (and spent hours on both) and this version does seem smoother than the 360 version. The opening cinematics seem crappy (low res. video) but the actual game looks great. Everything did feel faster though, as if someone had their finger on the fast foward button. I'll play it again when I get off work but alot of the complaints I'm seeing sound just over critical. Enjoy the game for what it does right and try not to find every excuse to whine and moan about it.

there is not a single Unreal Engine 3 PS3 game out there looking/performing on par or better than the 360 versions. Anyway, don't let that ruin your planet scanning fun!... terrible sequel.

Not seeing the big ammounts of tearing here, but the framerate really drops when there are more npc's on screen (both ingame and in cutscenes).

Mirror's Edge performs better with the exclusion of AA, however that's because the engine doesn't support it already, developers have to add it themselves if they want it on PS3.

Regardless, BioWare said it. If they said "no, of course it won't be as good as the 360 version", no one could complain.

Just went through it and here are the observations:

- framerate isn't locked at 30. Stare at certain walls and it clearly jumps

- No vsync with moderate tearing

- "hitches" quite often when turning and such. Don't know if it's due to trying to load assets during gameplay or what. Wasn't present in 360 version.

- Assets looks mostly the same. "New" lighting doesn't look better or worse, just different

- FMVs are shitty choppy for some reason

Yeah, I was curious. For the most part though, it's completely fine as long as they can fix the FMV issue in the retail. PS3 owners certainly get a real gem here, especially with all the DLC and whatnot

I see some significant improvements in lighting department. While ME series were known for its detailed texture works (particularly the characters), the lightings were almost always off making it uneasy on your eyes. With new ambient lighting, PS3 version provides more natural visuals that're a lot easier on your eyes. The visual assets seem pretty much identical, though I notice higher res normal maps mainly on charater's face on 360 version.

Another things to note is how v-sync was being handled. The 360 version uses what I call over scan sync where it forces v-sync when tearing spreads beyond possible over scan area. (same tech was used in Halo Reach and few other 360 titels.) which is pretty much the same as v-lock in terms of frame rate. Hence, ME2 had quite noticeable frame rate shift (since it goes say 30 -> 29 (tearing on overscan area) -> 20 (v-synce in effect) PS3 on the other hand uses common dynamic v-sync where you disable sync when frame rate dips below 30. So the screen tearing is a lot more visible on PS3 while it runs smoother.

IMO, the game is fairly well optimized for PS3 with an acceptable amount of tearing. (Especially considering that this is UE3 where PS3 lags always)

Excellent work Bioware!!

BTW who ever did the video for demo, FIRE HIM.

Both look basically the same, and basically bad. ME has some great art, but I never got what people found impressive about it, especially the first one which was a technical mess on 360.

Holy crap that is a ton of screenshots. Top is 360, bottom is ps3? I guess it's a decent enough port if I even need to ask.

A shame about the face textures though, since you spend so much of the game staring at them.

MazingerDUDE said:

That's really the only negative thing I saw in the demo. The video quality is shockingly bad. I haven't seen anything that bad on the PS3.

Daaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnnnn at those screenshots. Worse textures, missing shadows, lower shadow resolution, missing/lower quality normal maps. Can't believe that after a year and using a new engine that Bioware couldn't match the 360 version.

Edit: Top screenshots are 360, bottom are PS3.
Edit: Some of the lighting composition appears to be different, likely due to the game using the ME3 engine. At least PS3 owners get that perk even though pretty much everything else is worse.

It's quite noticeably less detailed in the face gen comparison. Is that due to the normal maps? Sorry if I used the wrong term.

Really looks fine, if you never played it, it's very much worth it. The game is not suddenly unplayable. If you got a 360 or good PC, play it on that, otherwise it's still a must play game I think.

The assets look the same to me, the saturation and contrast are clearly different though.

EDIT: Check this for comparison. I thru on a little more saturation and contrast to counter the PS3's 'softer' default image balancing.

the game looks almost the same....some shots look on the PS3 better ...others look better on the xbox!

in some screens it seems that shepperts face looks not so sharp...but i think this is because its a bit brighter. i think if i would make one of those close look shepperd screens a bit darker, it would be as sharp as the xbox version

...sorry for my englisch :D

That's something new they added to Mass Effect 2. And yes, it's stupid as it looks.

Also Liara being the love interest is playing it safe, Bioware. And no face creation in the PS3 demo (I think) compared to the 360/PC demos is WTF. DEFAULT SHEPARD SUCKS.
