Now Charlie Strong cutting half the team is starting to make sense.

It being every athlete and not just those of revenue sports is interesting.

There is no way in the world a school would be able to get away with paying only certain athletes.

I'd imagine groups could shut that down ASAP with Title IX laws. Any payments to athletes likely mean all athletes on varsity teams.

The Texas womens rowing team has over 40 athletes. Those athletes just hit the jackpot.

Exactly, more non revenue sports will be cut if this happens.

The sex lives of mixed OSU/UofM couples must be incredible.

Yeah, that's true. Anyway, Texas is loaded & according to wikipedia, they only field 18 varsity teams. Seems manageable.

This line of argument has been used intellectually dishonestly by universities for years, though.

ECU cut its running team, which cost something piddly like $140k/year, citing economic troubles and then turned around and paid a multi-million dollar buyout to its head coach.

Shit like this happens over and over again.

Rutgers/Maryland faced so much pushback for cutting sports, but the thing with these schools is the nonrevenue sports aren't funded nearly enough, I know personally Rutgers nonfootball facilities are subpar for pretty much every sport.

Mind you Rutgers/Maryland also have way more sports than the average university, with Rutgers at 27.

edit. What i'm trying to say, is I believe that $140k is just trying to keep the lights on.

ECU as in East Carolina? Who did they pay a multi-million dollar buyout to? Skip Holtz left of his own volition and Ruffin McNeil has been there for 5 years. Was it a basketball coach?

What would they cut while staying in compliance with Title IX? The school has to offer the same amount of scholarships between men's and women's sports.

There's a ton of male nonrevenue sports still out there as well. They're first on the chopping block.

ADs hate doing this, the pushback from those sport alumni is not something you want to deal with.

I was a student when that happened.

Too bad that's about the same time they ceased being an in-state rival.

Yeah, things have changed. Now it just consists of them being obsessed with us, and us not caring about them until the one week out of the year when we have to.

Lonestar said:
Anyone heard from Mre in the last few weeks?

Assuming he's just really busy. That's what he'd been talking about in his last few posts here.

SBNation has the police report on Harris. Honestly, regardless of what actually happened, guy doesn't seem like a real class act.

Then again, it'd be hypocritical of me to be uncomfortable with this when we had tons of real ugly stuff going on during the Meyer years.

I always love it when UGA fans go out of their way to talk about Tech and bash Tech and then claim we are obsessed with them. Can't wait for our weekly Georgia Tech news from andycapps who is not obsessed with GT at all.

Here we go again. I got absolutely hosed last week. That will hopefully be my worst week of the year.

Let me put it another way. Which happens more on here. You posting about GT or GT fans posting about UGA? It's ok. There isn't anything wrong with a continued interest in our program. I'll send to a GT T-Shirt if you want one.

Eh, I just like pointing and making fun of our little brother.
